It's finally official people! From May 2009, Square Enix will become the official owner of the Tomb Raider franchise. Eidos as a publisher is no more. And I say good riddance to bad rubbish.

But what does it mean Spong? I'm reading it as a take-over, not a buy-out. I think Eidos is still there, only working for another owner. If that's the case, what was the point?

Hmmm, one min I'm happy Eidos is gone, the next I'm worried Lara is gone. (The Lara I know anyway)

I just hope that SE preserves her character and image while at the same time giving a fresh approach.

Uh, the rubbish that gave us Tomb Raider in the first place?

I don't really understand where the animosity for Eidos comes from really (not just yours, but others' too). I understand that Eidos have been blamed for rushing first Core and then Crystal to come out with games year after year, but isn't it true that games like Angel of Darkness and Underworld) (the two games that most seem to consider as the bad eggs of the series) were in production for years? I don't think Eidos are completely at fault.

I don't know anything about Square-Enix and I don't know if this means Crystal will stay as developers or if another team will take over, I just hope Tomb Raider is kept on and we'll see another game in another couple of years or so and that it isn't given too much of a change, with Lara's back-story or whatever having another overhaul.
When just looking isn't always enough...

Eidos publish they don't develop games, they didn't develop Tomb Raider. Core Design are the sole creators of Tomb Raider and Eidos merely had the right to publish it. If it hadn't been them, who knows? But that's a moot point.

And the vehemence towards Eidos has been born from the display of utter contempt in their pursuit of money. Twice they rushed games and once they forced a game the developers didn't even want to make (Chronicles). They cancelled TR:AE too don't forget, in favour of Anniversary. And when the proverbial hit the fan after the release of AoD and Underworld, who paid the price? The developers, at the mercy of a publisher that should've been taking the blame instead.

But with regards to the takeover/buyout thing, you're right Randy. Eidos the company could well carry on, it's not been specified yet, but it'll only be Eidos in name. The thought that the staff behind it are no longer the same is, frankly, a comfort (to me).

I think I'm just going to keep reading until I can think an actual phrase. My reaction is still a "Wow".

I really don't have a problem with Eidos in general as they did give us some memorable, (maybe too memorable), Tomb Raider games, but I feel that the ones who are directly responsible for putting out games that were not ready to be marketed should go. This whole Underworld thing has turned out to be one big fiasco, it's an embarrassment to all who were involved, and to continue on like nothing happened is inexcusable.

 Finally I can say something not "Wow"-ish for once!
That was a bit odd of Eidos, especially laying off 30 CD workers (including Lindstrom), and not being concerned about the employees', company's, and TR's welfare. To be honest, the buyout's the best thing I've heard of for a long time and I think this'll give a fresh start no matter how twisted the situation may be.
I may have a slight fear of it being turned into a KH/FF-style game, but SE can do good things. Let's see what they've got for our girl... ;)
