Lara's Shadow Discussion; MASSIVE SPOILERS! BEWARE!

Okay people, so Lara's Shadow was released today and, despite my complaints about the inclusion of further Underworld storyline that non-360 owners will never get to enjoy, I have to say that it has been truly outstanding. In a complete contrast to Beneath the Ashes, Lara's Shadow saw a glint of hope that Crystal are finally beginning to grasp one of the aspects of Tomb Raider that made the originals so great.

I'm not talking about any gameplay aspects, in that respect, LS appears to play like a rip-off of Prince of Persia with just as many tedious and repetitive battles. What I'm talking about is the characterisation, the Doppelgänger is easily the darkest character Crystal have introduced. Watching her in the cutscenes from Lara's Shadow was like seeing the old Lara re-envisioned. It was a reflection of how Lara used to be so blinkered in achieving her goals. Watching the Doppelgänger stand over Natla as she burned in the eitr, a satisfying smile creeping across her face as Natla screamed for her to obey, was a joy to soak up.

On the flip-side however, there's still the fact that the storyline has taken a twist that cannot be argued as not changing the ending to Underworld. At the end of Underworld, both Natla and the Doppelgänger are assumed dead. Natla is still assumed dead at the conclusion of Lara's Shadow, but the Doppelgänger most certainly isn't. She's very much alive, more so in fact because she's been set free from control by Lara and now has her own free will. In this respect, I still think it's an outrage that Crystal have released something this significant to such a select audience.

So what are your thoughts on the matter? Have you played Lara's Shadow? Do you think the Doppelgänger was an improvement to Lara or not? How do you think this will effect the future of the series now that it's been revealed the Doppelgänger is most definitely still out there? Want to see more of her? Should she have her own game? Or, as some have suggested, should she even REPLACE Crystal's Lara?

Well, it sounds like there is a glimmer of hope after all, EXCEPT, what's the deal with these games only being available to x-box players? What, the rest of don't count? We don't exist? Why not make them only for Playstation, after all, weren't we the original console format in the first place? Playing to a particular group doesn't seem fair to me nor does it make sense. Maybe, because they failed to make the game work on the other consoles, they just decided to disregard them. Not that my opinion counts, nor will it change anything, but CD continues to lose respect in my eyes. LONG LIVE CORE!

*Plans to swipe brothers 360*

Or maybe I'll save my sore arm and watch it on YT.....

The day I touch a 360 for TR purposes is the day I die. I agree with ya Randy. I've been a hard core PS user most of my life.

But seeing how Spong said he liked, that says a lot. :P It must be good. lol *Heads to YT*

Well, I don't think all the Sega Saturn fans will like that! The Saturn was the first to actually have TR, it was theirs for at least a couple of months until the playstation got their version; then Sony did the exact thing that Microsoft has done now, made TR a exclusive.

I, myself love the Playstation (although I didn't buy a PS3 due to the price!), but it annoys me when someone says how TR is the Playstation's baby and no one else deserves it; it may seem totally unfair but it happens all the time, for example...

♦Sony made TR a playstation exclusive (until TLR), possibly annoying Saturn owners.
♦The PC has exclusive "Gold" levels which console owners would never get the chance to play.
♦The Dreamcast TR's had special features and sneak previews of AoD which playstation owners never saw on their version.
♦And finally the 360 has some special costumes and 2 levels.

TR has always been popular which means each company has always tried to make certain deals and extras to help them gain more sales; although many PS3 owners are upset, the truth is that it's Microsoft's turn to take advantage of TR's popularity.

Yes, I do own a 360 but I'm not taking Microsoft's side, personally I'm used to things like this happening; also I'm not willing to connect my 360 to the internet, get a Gold account and then pay for the levels, so I'm not going to be able to get the DLC's too...

So there, I've started to ramble so I better stop! :P

I don't want you to be annoyed but, I think you get the point, if it's to be made for one, then it should be made for all and not single out one platform for what ever reason. I never considered Sega to be a serious contender. They remind me of Atari and I don't ever remember hearing of a thing called an X-box, up until maybe three or four years ago, long after I was stuck in Natla's mines on my PS1. So, maybe it's all the changes that I disagree with.

I get how you may think it's unfair, and I feel the same way too (I feel that the DLC or any other extras should be available to everyone); it's just that I get slightly annoyed when I hear playstation owners say how they should be the only one's who get the DLC because she was on the PS1 for a long period of time.

Why say it's unfair that it's only available to a certain group and then state that they're the only ones who deserve the extras? :-/

I'll start with addressing Spong's questions about Miss Doppel.

Having played Lara's Shadow, I have to say this really was a great extension to her story. I liked how they explained her 'birth' and survival. I liked her attitude/ sarcastic wit and her super strength and speed. I enjoyed playing as this new kind of character.

However, I really can't see how she can be developed further as a character. She has served her purpose, she was freed from her existence as a slave to Natla by Lara and was given the chance to do both herself and Lara a favour by making sure 'Natla suffered' and supposedly die for good this time. Is there really any more to her? Does she have Lara's knowledge and expertise? I see her as quite one dimensional; someone who has little purpose in life now. If she were to return in a future game, how would she be used as part of the plot? She could come in handy for reaching those places that even Lara cant reach and for combat purposes, but even with her own free will, she is little more than a soldier still. One Lara is enough. No need for two. ;)

As for exclusivity for DLC, then this was definitely a wrong choice on Eidos's part. The story for TRU was expanded upon, there is no denying that. And a good majority have missed out on that - or at the very least, missed out on experiencing it first hand through gameplay. Next time, all DLC should be available to all. PC/PS3/XBox and if they include them, Wii players as well (I can't imagine the PS2 will be included again, sadly). DLC should certainly not expand on the story, but be a seperate adventure. I understand that Microsoft paid for the extras this time, but in that case, Crystal/Eidos should have made sure the levels had no relevance to the main TRU story.

@ lilhanhan, although you do need to pay for the DLC (or rather the MS points, 1600 for the two) you can purchase them with a free silver account, no need to go Gold. ;)

So, because I own a Playstation 2, I don't even know what the doppelganger is after all of these years of playing those games. Now, does THAT seem fair?

@ lilhanhan: don't be annoyed over my comments, we are all friends here.

No, it isn't fair that there are a majority of players who won't get to see this level played out for themselves. I don't know if you have played TRU on the PS2 yet, Randy, but I will presume you haven't as you say you don't even know who the Doppelgänger is. Unless you really don't wish to be spoiled, I'd recommend watching a video of at least one cutscene maybe just so you know who we're talking about. Give me time, and I could find one.

Hi there Rai,
No, I haven't played it on my dusty old PS2 as of yet. I don't know if it was even released here. A simple thing like playing a new game is so fouled up now, it's unbelievable. Now you can see why I rant..............................

It's a shame you haven't been able to play yet. I found a video if you don't mind a spoiler, just so you know who we're talking about for LS. It's her intro in TRU, and is a spoiler, but isn't too long.

Watch at your own risk ;) Also in here, Lara has been modded to look like her as well.

Okay, thanks for that, it's like the one in TR1, somewhat. Was that a cut scene or actual gameplay?

That was a cutscene. If you have seen any of the trailers, you may recognise it though.

It is worth playing, even if to see for yourself what it is all about. I enjoyed it in the most part (with a few exceptions).

But we've strayed a little from the main point of the thread. [/slight deviation ;) ]
