Square Enix bids for Eidos
By Alex Sassoon Coby, GameSpot UKPosted Feb 12, 2009 3:39 am PT
Tomb Raider publisher's board accepts £84.3 million offer, unanimously recommends deal to shareholders.

The identity of the company with which Eidos Interactive--formerly known as SCi Entertainment--entered takeover talks in January has been revealed. Today, the board of the beleaguered publisher revealed that it has come to an agreement with none other than Japanese role-playing game giant Square Enix.

Talking about the deal, Square Enix president Yoichi Wada said: "Eidos' products are highly complementary to our business and will accelerate our aggressive expansion into Western markets." In the announcement of the offer, the Tomb Raider, Deus Ex, Hitman, Thief, Championship Manager, and Just Cause franchises were called out as being among "the world's leading video game properties."

The Japanese publisher's offer of £84.3 million ($120 million) is being unanimously recommended to Eidos shareholders by the firm's board. That total represents an offer of 32 pence ($0.46) per share, which is more than triple the company's value when the approach was made, and double its share price when the London Stock Exchange closed yesterday. Since the announcement this morning, Eidos shares have climbed further, peaking at 31.25p ($0.45)--a 123 percent rise from the opening bell.

The announcement follows the news in January, shortly before Eidos announced that it had received and was considering a takeover approach, that sales of Tomb Raider Underworld had failed to meet expectations. Last year, the company shed 20 percent of its workforce, and its CEO admitted that the company needed "immediate change" to deliver appropriate returns to its investors.

Square Enix has been looking for acquisition targets to expand its global reach for some time, with Wada saying that his firm was "talking with quite a few companies in and outside of Japan," with a view to acquisitions. The move follows the Japanese publishing house's unsuccessful $200m move for Tecmo, and comes as its own share price is in the doldrums, nearing a six-year low. The company also released its delayed revised financial projections for the current financial year, downgrading its expected net income by 62.5 percent, blaming conditions in the arcade and offline gaming segments of its business.

Interesting... East meets West deal. Classic. I'm keeping an open mind on this one! :acute:

So what does this really mean as far as Tomb Raider games go?

I'm not sure weather to be happy, or sad. I'm happy Eidos is not handling TR, but I ask the same of Randy, what happens to TR?

I think SE gets the rights to it and if they wanted to, they could refurbish TR into the classic style.
Check out this photo of their latest FF installment. Amazing! :D This photo's in-game too!

This character's name is Lightning. If you want a basic summary from the TGS info collected so far, click here.

But, of course, it's their decision as to whether or not they should continue the series. They've done great with KH and FF so I think TR would have a great revival under SquareEnix's hands. Who knows, Tetsuya Nomura might hire Eric Lindstrom for the project!

I'd question the popularity of Kingdom Hearts, it's very much a cult game. I'm a big fan of SquEnix (well, Squaresoft anyway, I've never been keen on Enix), but along with a lot of other fans, I've always hated the Kingdom Hearts games. They're just watered-down RPG hybrids aimed at children that cash in on other far more popular franchises. Actually, I blame a lot of SquEnix's output going downhill in the last few years on the merger. Since Sqauresoft and Enix teamed up, Enix has done nothing but dilute Square's pool of imagination. Final Fantasy has become stagnant as a result of that.

But I think the SquEnix buyout of Eidos is fantastic news as far as the Tomb Raider franchise goes. I for one can't wait to see what, if anything, they do with the IP. But I'm guessing the only change we'll really notice is the removal of the poisonous Eidos logo from the box of the next game. Realistically, I don't even think Crystal will be dropped as the developer (though I wish they were).

I don't want to see another TR game for at least three or four years though. I hope to God that, whatever they do, they don't rush it. But, SquEnix are well-known for taking their time. Release dates mean nothing to them (outside of Japan anyway).

I am living in hope that if they continue with TR they'll return to a more old-skool theme.

I can but dream.. ;)

Oh and I agree, there's no rush. Quality must come before quantity where Tomb Raiding is concerned. A good TR game is playable multiple times over both short and longer periods of time whereas I am reading a lot about fans who are selling their next-gens on after a pitiful few hours of gameplay. The opinion seems to be that the newer games don't hold enough appeal to be played with frequency, if indeed they are played but twice.

But I imagine this stems back to the limitations regarding environments again. I occasionally find areas in the old-skool Raiders that were previously missed/undiscovered. There's not a lot of scope for "getting lost" in these new games.

For me it's quite simply the difference between taking the B Roads (a scenic drive in the country taking a longer route) and driving down the motorway in one straight line in half the time :ermm:

Kinda agree with you on the Squaresoft-SquareEnix thing. I love SquareSoft - sounds cooler.
OK :ermm: KH didn't do too bad when it came to a storyline. But I agree that some creativity was diluted from the Soft-Enix alliance. I especially noticed it in KH2. It was going to be a more mature storyline with the Roxas sections. There were a lot of things in Nomura's notes that were removed or edited from the final cut. It was REALLY apparent in the US release. Sure, it seem child-targeted with the Disney characters, but it also introduces some of the younger audiences to FF (which brought up a lot of controversy in some households...)

(runs away from answering second paragraph)

(comes back with a bowl of ice cream) Well, Square really loves their time. ^_^ But Japan gets all of the plot exclusives so we tend to miss out a lot when it comes to goodies. Hopefully Square would be considerate to all of the raiders domestically and internationally (but I highly doubt that! :P Remember the sketchbook?)
But it would be nice for a delay. I think that's what made TR:L fresh. With Spong's suggestion of 3-4 years, they'll probably come up with an extremely good balance with environments, content, characters, features, themes, and good hair.

I'm concerned that if indeed she comes back, we won't recognize her or she will be a Disney type character. But Singstar, I'll say this, the picture of Lightning that you posted is the most impressive thing I've seen. It looks like a photo of an actual person. Wouldn't it be outstanding if that's the kind of thing we could expect in a TR game?

She definitely won't be Disney-type. Leave that to the KH series.

But I'm kinda nervous that they'd overkill the graphics. FF is getting so realistic that it's believable.

...Yet I sometimes prefer the simplicity of the more "animated" graphics. They are more dynamic in terms of colour. Too much realism tends to spell dull and uninspiring hues.

Just imagine TR2's Wreck of the Maria Doria recreated with more modern graphics? It was vibrant (albeit a little too vibrant after extended play), but tolerable because the oranges and blues were bright. But if it was done nowadays it would be aesthetically extremely dull and more "mechanical" looking what with all that machinery.

To be honest I don't know anything about Square-Enix, except that they publish the Final Fantasy games. I guess I'll just have to see what, if anything, they come up with for Tomb Raider and judge from there.
When just looking isn't always enough...

Hey Rai! Good to see you! :D

I'd be nervous about the mechanics too. But SE always adds a little magical twist here and there, so I'm sure that it's not going to be too flat.

Why the hatred for Eidos (And no, I am not instigating a nasty debate). :$

You seemed content on their forum at one point and although I know nothing (and don't wish to know anything), about the circumstances regarding your status on said forum, I do question your use of words when discussing the company.

They may have arguably failed us where TR is concerned but to infer that they are "Poisonous" or indeed their logo is somewhat unprofessional from a moderator.

Just my opinion. :)

I'll tell you why Lo, they're priority was profits instead of the satisfaction of the consumer.
Remember your posts awhile back about how you objected to the bakery being put on the bottom shelves, picking up all that dirt?.....................Same thing.
