We all love videogames and we all love movies, but what about movies based on videogames? Most of us here love the Tomb Raider movies but what about the other popular videogame franchises who have managed to get their own movies based on them? Which is your favourite? Which one do you love to hate? And of course, which one do you love but seriously don't want to admit it because it's one of your guilty pleasures? Here you can share your love or hate towards videogame movies and what experiences you've encountered while watching them. I'm not afraid to admit that I love "Street Fighter: The Movie", not the good anime ones based on Street Fighter II mind you, but the cheesy 90's one starring Jean-Claude Van Damme and Kylie Minogue. It's one of those films where you can casually watch it and switch your brain off, it's seriously fits in the "so bad it's good" category. I also secretly love to watch "House of the Dead" because it's too bad for words, it's good for all the wrong reasons and frankly it's so funny watching all the gormless and rubbish zombies stumble around (even in the actions scenes, half of the zombies just stay still when they're inches away from one of the teenagers...I know zombies don't really have brains but come on even zombies know that stupid teenagers equal food). I can't stand the Resident Evil films though, they've kinda ruined my favourite characters (such as Jill Valentine and Claire Redfield) and the character Alice just gets on my nerves with all her psychic powers; it's not really hard to survive when you have amazing powers, I mean come on! She can even punch Nemesis in the face! >.< Anyway, I'm rambling now and I haven't even started to talk about the Mortal Kombat movies yet.... So please share your love or hatred towards videogame movies before I start waffling on again. ![]() |

"Alice just gets on my nerves with all her psychic powers" Alice Cullen? ![]() I don't have any faves besides TR. And from what I saw of street fighter, it's very cheesy. I'm trying to think if I have any faves besides TR, but I'm not coming up with anything. Haven't seen much.... I'll get back to ya on that. lol |

Super Mario Bros. Movie was just so horrible that it was funny. Aww man I have to rollover laughing everytime I see that.
I can't see the Resident Evil movies (they're all R) but the accuracies of the characters are just way off! I think the only good ones were Street Fighter and TR, and Final Fantasy VII. Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within had really good graphics but they just didn't have the story to match the realism. Final Fantasy VII Advent Children and Last Order were just amazing. It makes me wish that SquareEnix would refurbish the KH series. I don't know why, but I feel like making a Trauma Center movie. Maybe the dramatic music would actually fit somewhere (and save gamers' wrists from having CTS). I heard they were going to try to make movies out of Halo and Super Metroid. They released the trailers yet they didn't go through with these projects. Halo has a bigger possibility of happening, but Super Metroid won't happen due to the loads of effects and the difficulty of finding the perfect person to act out Samus. There was an awesome model who walked through the trailer but she clearly didn't match the sketches during the catwalk alternation. You see Samus with an almond shaped eye but the model had more of an angular eye. I heard that there was supposed to be a Castlevania movie but was scrapped because SquareEnix wanted to keep their fanbase. EDIT: Here's the trailers to prove some of my points. Halo Trailer - The movie was supposed to release Summer 2008 but the project was axed due to lack of sponsorship and massive expenses from the production of Halo 3. Super Metroid Movie Intro - this was the stand-in version of the movie intro. The movie never made full production because of the expensive effects and fanbase devotion. Castlevania? SquareEnix? Surely you mean Konami? I like the Resident Evil movies, I think they're pretty cool and actually compliment the game series (even though they're not canon). I have all 3 on DVD and I'm really hoping the fourth comes to fruition. I got Resident Evil: Degeneration last week when it was finally released here and, while it's technically inferior to Final Fantasy: Spirits Within, it was certainly more in keeping with the Resident Evil series (which isn't surprising given that it's a CGI movie). At least it wasn't as painfully short as Final Fantasy: Advent Children was. Speaking of which, Advent Children is laughable. It's complete nonsense and it's way too short, there's like two battle sequences and then it ends! And there was some seriously lazy regional work done on it (or not done, depending on how you look at it). I absolutely fell in love with Spirits Within though, and to this day it remains the benchmark by which I judge every CGI move that has subsequently been released. And nothing has come close yet. Beyond those few and my favourite, all other game to movie translations have been utter tripe. Alone in the Dark, House of the Dead, Super Mario Bros The Movie; they're all embarrassments. As for Street Fighter II: The Movie, I've never seen it. It has such a reputation that there's undiscovered tribes in the deepest reaches of the Brazilian rainforest that know how much it stinks. My favourite game movie to date though is Silent Hill. As attempts go, it's easily the best. Although it did fall flat on its face because of one thing; Roger Avery. I don't care if he wrote parts of Reservoir Dogs and Pulp Fiction, his work on Silent Hill is awful. He ruined any potential plot and seemed to dumb everything down. Which is a great shame. Beyond that, the Silent Hill movie is a masterpiece. And it's incredibly violent too considering it only has a 15 certificate here in the UK. I still hope that there'll be a sequel though, Cristophe Gans can Ddirect again, but they can get rid of Avery. Edited by Spong, Feb 10 2009, 02:25 AM.

I mix up game companies a lot. Then again, I stayed up until 1am (which would probably be 9 or 10am in your time) so my memory's messed up. ![]() Silent Hill was chopped! Overall, it looked good. But I think not only the direction was spoiled, but also the advertising ruined its chance of a box office hit. Did you see what some people did to the photoshopped mouths on the movie posters? Shocking.

I haven't watched Silent Hill yet, but I haven't really played the games so I wouldn't know how much they've kept of or changed certain characters and parts of the script. ^.^; May I ask about the "photoshopped mouths on the movie posters"? I'm really curious but at the same time a bit worried about what you mean with that question...

It's not that horrifying. The Silent Hill posters were vandalized a lot - that was the horrifying part. This is the image of the original poster. To be honest, I wished they picked a different design. Here's the article too. - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Silent_Hill_(film) EDIT: Even better - I've got the giganto list of VG-based movies. ![]() http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_films_based_on_video_games Edited by Singstar90210, Feb 10 2009, 07:31 PM.

No one mentioned Mortal Kombat? the first one I mean, not the second one, that was awful, but the first one was totally awesome in a cheesy way, the only bad part of that was the Goro fights, why did anyone think a big puppet could fight? it couldn't even move too much, oh well, the rest made up for that. ![]() And also Doom, I know it was lacking story, and was also predictable, but it was pretty fun too, the Rock was cool and that first person scene was crazy. ![]() But most video games turned movies are really lame, at least some are funny, like the already mentioned Super Mario Bros, Mario Mario and the dancing Goombas were insane.

Generally, I hate the lot. No hard feelings, but games being translated into Hollywood usually fails. Except movies made by the guys, like the Final Fantasies. Then again, I'm probably not one to judge. All I know is now, when I watch the TR's, I can't help but cringe slightly. EDIT: What's this nonsense I heard about a Halo movie? My god, if it wasn't bad enough already..... Edited by Rachie, Jun 1 2009, 12:56 AM.

I've never played Halo (though Halo 3 looks really good), but I don't think that it would be the best franchise to base a movie on since there isn't really a well-defined plot to it. I would weep if someone would think of making a GTA movie. Clearly you can see the huge controversy that it brings. I've never played it in my life and I never will. What I really hate is the reverse - trying to convert movies, tv shows, and books into VGs. If you want an example of that disaster, see the Grey's Anatomy video game vids. The creators feel like as if they've captured the essence of a Grey's Anatomy show but I can even tell from their weak efforts of promoting it that it just emerged as a dramatic & flat version of Trauma Center mixed with an unedited, unrealistic Charles Schwartz commercial. |
