Games Similar to Tomb Raider

Since this is for non-TR gaming recommendations, how about some games that are similar to Tomb Raider? Preferably old-skool type games.

I have already mentioned the Indianna Jones games and I'm not too bothered about the main character being a female, just so long as the gameplay is similar to TR and in the third person perspective.

I'm not at all opposed to the old-skool graphics either, as a matter of fact I often prefer the more simplistic, vibrant locations and find some next-gens to be somewhat dark and dull - quite bland and "mechanical" looking.

For example, think the cave interiors in Anniversary and then think TR2's Venice!!! I know which I prefer! ;)

So have you any suggestions for a similar type of game to the TR originals? Maybe you have long since abandoned the older games and prefer something a little more gritty and up-to-date?

Feel free to add a picture or a link to a review if you know of anything that might interest me and our fellow Raiders!! :eat:

I don't know why clicking on Rassenga Stampa is not working for me, but maybe you can try it. There's a really cool web diagram that shows games that have a similar style to TR. I was surprised that Resident Evil, Ratchet and Clank, and Oni were intertwined in that mix. I'd definitely recommend Ratchet and Clank. That game's just hilarious!

I clicked on the link but couldn't find the games. I'm interested in playing a similar Tomb Raider game but I don't want it to be cartoonish looking. I viewed the Prince of Persia but it's not my cup of tea. I like the action/adventure/exploring type with a sense of realism. Is there anything for me and my PS2?

You may have heard this game a lot during the TR:U pixel debates. There's a game called Uncharted: Drake's Fortune. Though Nathan Drake's a bit lower than Lara when it comes to pixel quality, I've heard some pretty good reviews about that game.

I checked out the trailer on youtube and there's too much fighting plus the guy's wearing gym shoes, who does that? Any other suggestions?

There is Oni. My brother enjoyed that game. But according to the graph (that was supposed to be under Rassegna Stampa but mysteriously vanished), it was just too obvious that the fighting system was based off of TR (though it was produced by some obscure company) down to the intense, gritty female character.

I only have a few recommendations left that I can remember off the top of my head currently. I need to look through my collection to see if I have anymore.

I have 3 that I can suggest right off the bat - Ratchet and Clank (it contains as much adventure as hilarity), Jak and Daxter (Precursor Legacy is the best as well as hard!), and the upcoming game inFamous. inFamous is not really similar to TR due to the fact that it's a sandbox game (meaning you choose how you want the main character to be), but it has that adventure that a lot of people crave mixed with Mirror's Edge flair and Fantastic Four epic-ness.

Thanks Singstar, I'll check them out. This would be so much easier if I wasn't so hard to please.

I'm afraid a lot of older games may well have a tendency to look too "cartoonish", Randy my friend. But as long as you mean the likes of Hugo and Mario being cartoon-like compared to TR2 thru' TR5 (and the old-skool TR graphics still hold appeal), then take a look on this very board for my Indianna Jones thread if you have not already done so (Sorry, I should have checked first before replying) :$

The Infernal Machine is possibly viewed as a carbon copy of Tomb Raider and a bit of a rip-off by some but as a gamer, I can't complain since I have really gotten into the game, in spite of getting stuck at some point due to a bizarre puzzle. But there is a nifty little walkthrough, it's just that I have been working on other projects and haven't loaded it since Christmas! I am capable of losing interest very rapidly if I find a tiresome puzzle that requires 8 hours of running back to a switch and playing the puzzle out by trial and error.

Again, it depends on what you constitute as a cartoon-like game. Eggburt and the a/m were like that but this Indy game is no worse than TR2 in terms of graphics so if you like TR2 (as I do), you should enjoy The Infernal Machine ;)
