Apologies if you've taken offence to anything I (or others) have said since your last post Sing. My own reaction to your comments about Lara being "established" was purely knee-jerk (in my typical style) and they weren't specifically targeted at you. You also certainly shouldn't silence your opinions because of us lot. We might've been playing the games longer than you, but that doesn't make the points we make more valid than yours.

I know. I didn't exactly pay attention to what I said back there. I guess I kinda rambled and jumbled up things a bit. Sometimes I don't really know whether I'm showing my old-school side or my modern side because I know both of them a bit too well when it comes to historical facts.
But you do bring a point. I think the series needs a more solid foundation when it comes to focus. The environment approach in TR1 seemed to work the best. Even the statistics say it!

It feels a bit weird how CD just keeps on switching where they want to go with TR. TRL - Main focus was to refurbish the storyline. TRA - Main focus was to attract the old-school raiders while keeping the story modifications. TRU - Main focus was to create a more realistic look for Lara and the environments.

Problem - enough attractions! There's not enough substance! They need to get into the meat of the plot and make the environments a bit more personal!

In a mad kind of way, the Underworld debacle has presented Crystal with a good opportunity to do exactly what you say, give the game some substance. The trilogy's plot is over, Lara's now free to go wherever Crystal want to take her. I hope the next title is a long time coming (a good three or four years) and I hope they finally give the levels the attention they really do require.

I don't deny Lara, in herself, is a niche market that attracts a lot of people, but Crystal kind of got carried away with that. Legend, as their showcase, really was all about Lara the character. I'm not saying that was wrong, Lara's come a long way in ten years and Crystal were doing their best to add to that. Like you say Sing, Legend was a big shake up of Lara's bio and, in hindsight now that the trilogy is over, I question whether or not it was really worth it. What has it done beyond bringing controversy to the series and alienating a heck of a lot of the original fanbase?

As things stand, if you ask me, the best thing Crystal can do in the meantime is to go on a sabbatical where Tomb Raider is concerned. They need to partake in many many workshops to truly understand the ideology of Tomb Raider. They need to shed their obsession with Lara. And to keep their pockets lined while they do that? Remake some of the other old-skool games.

Amen to that, Spong. You said practically everything that I was thinking.
Now that Lara's lost the original motive of archaeology in her trilogy storyline, a 3-year production period would be best. Eidos would have to sit back and hope that everyone swims because art can't be rushed! Crystal needs to take their sweet time.
Workshops! Definitely necessary!
RaiderCon anyone? To be honest, it's better than promoting TR on game shows. It's like how Star Trek has FedCon (to throw out an example).
Maybe some Core Design employees can be introduced into the mix to emphasize the old-school gameplay. Sounds like a strange idea (even for me! ) But for technicality, they had the series longer and probably have the most knowledge of TR's uprisings and pitfalls. Maybe some TR music artists (like McCree and Connelly) could help with the soundtrack more so that O'Malley can finally tap into his original TR sound. It would be nice for the music to have a little reference to the classics, sorta like how Folmann did with Anniversary.

In the PS2 version, the cut scenes look like they were copied off of a t.v. screen and then transferred to the game, making the image quality fuzzy and the colors washed out. This is the first time I've ever seen the main gameplay graphics looking better than the cut scenes.
Do you think this was done as a short-cut to save money? What other reason could there be?

The landscapes look a bit washed out. The gameplay looks good, but it's obvious that they had to significantly change the environments since a lot of moves couldn't make it to the PS2's capacity. It felt like that they cut out the fill-in parts and plastered in random platforms and glued boulders in the game areas. I was also surprised that the gameplay was actually better than the cutscenes. Most of the time it's the other way around or the cutscenes and gameplay have about the same quality (like some of the recent FF game installments).

Well, it sounds like you're seeing the same things I'm seeing. So, it's not just my copy and also I must add that the graphics that make up the outdoor scenes are very good as compared to the indoor ones.

Agreed. The Croft Manor effects in the intro reminded me a bit of the Wii effects. They're not as severe, but they're not as great as the outdoor levels.
