...it stinks. Buzz Monkey seemed to have forgotten everything they'd learned with Legend & Anniversary. Underworld is awful on the PS2, worse than the Wii version. This is the first title in the history of Tomb Raider that I've not bought. I never liked the next-gen version, it was too flashy, too much style over substance and the game suffered hugely as a result. I thought, given that the PS2 can't do the style, that the substance would be improved. But it hasn't, in fact it appears to have taken several huge steps back. It is truly a dark day. As swan songs go, with Underworld being the last TR on PS2, this is one hell of an horrific note to go out on. People in America who are waiting for this, I'd stop holding your breath and go buy something else. |

I figured this would be the case, the news I dreaded to hear, now what to do? Is it worse than Legend or Anniversary? What kind of problems are we talking here. |

@Tessa It's due out in America some time in March. The total lack of media online related to the PS2 version made me instantly suspicious. I thought I was being cynical, but when the official announcement came 3 days ago about the PS2 release dates, I knew I wasn't. The fact nothing appeared online before release has now been explained. The technical issues prevalent in the Wii version are also present in the PS2 version (though thankfully not the game-stopping Thailand glitch). The visuals are awful, as I said in my OP, they're not even comparable to PS2 Anniversary or Legend. I can't understand why that is. I never expected it to be a fraction of the next-gen graphics, but I expected it to be better than what has been offered. Gameplay elements that are missing in the Wii version are also missing in the PS2 version, there's no sprint, no acrobatics (on swing-poles or Lara's various floor-based tumbling). There's no dual aiming, no weapon select, no costume select (which I don't care about), no free-climbing. The Wii version (in my opinion) had the best camera of all the versions available, but the camera in the PS2 version is awful, even worse than the next-gen version. I will say this though, the variation in level layout in comparison to the next-gen versions makes for moments of freshness. But that only applies if you've played the next-gen version. Considering Buzz Monkey had the best part of three extra months to iron out all the wrinkles, they've done a terrible job. Edited by Spong, Jan 23 2009, 10:49 PM.

Well, I was going to hold off on getting it until I read some news, (yours to be exact), so I guess that's it. It's not really the part about wasting money, but it's about being disappointed. Thanks Spong for the heads up. |

@Randy - Not really bed time. But I've been tired all day. ![]() @Spong - Wii! The Wii had a better camera? I find that hard to believe. But do...

I can't begin to say how I wish I'd never played the next-gen version before this, I can't help but think that I'd have enjoyed it more. As much as I kept telling myself that the PS2 version wouldn't be anywhere near the same, what it does contain is far less than I expected. EDIT The camera on the Wii was pretty spot on, it panned to all the set points immediately in order to show the next ledge to jump to etc... In the next-gen and PS2 version the camera is slow and unresponsive to move and you have to wait for it to pan back to these set points. You have to leave the pad idle for nearly a good 5 seconds before the camera will do its thing. It's terrible. Edited by Spong, Jan 23 2009, 11:04 PM.

So what does this mean to me? Are you saying because I have nothing to compare it to, I won't be too disappointed? |

It's hard to say. It all depends on what your own expectations are. If you've not played other versions, but are still unsure, the best I can suggest is rental. It's just that I was expecting it to be as good as Anniversary, and technically it isn't in my opinion. |

As good as Anniversary? The camera for the most part stunk in that game and it caused real issues. I was never expecting anything spectacular, so maybe I'll survive. |

I thought the camera was really quite intuitive in Anniversary (which I played on the PS2 for the longest time before I got the PC version). But I've always been quite dexterous on a joypad and have never had problems using both analogue sticks at once while mixing it all with the various face buttons. Underworld's camera is just problematic 80% of the time, it really counts against the gameplay at certain points. When I'd get into a tight spot I'd find that the camera wouldn't want to move where I'd want it to and I'd have to forget playing the game in order to spend time wrestling it to a compromise. |
