Sounds like that type of filter would work fine and like you said the most sure fire way of making sure you kill the bugs is to bring it to a boil. No need to fuss with thermometers that way. I like to use the KISS system as much as possible.

Some old time ways of Clairifying water are to add alum or charcoal to water at a slow/low boil to collect the particulates then strain through cloth or sand etc. Pine sap might do the same, I would have to test that. You still want to kill the various nasty animals in the 'clean' water. I have heard that there are some nasty cysts that take mucho boiling to kill.

Or you could just purchase a couple berkley water purification bottles good for 650 uses on water or 150 used for pond scum water. Walmart is even selling a setup for around $40 dollars now. You can buy the Berkley for $30 though
