Have built and used rain catchment systems where I have lived in different parts of the world. They can be built on as big of a scale as you want or can afford and are a great idea. Here is a link to a good starting point. It is a free manual put out by the state of Texas on harvesting rain water. I will be glad to try to answer any specific questions that anyone has about it.

Wow! Maybe I will just rinse out the black barrels my chemicals come in, pull off the stickers, paint "Rain Barrel" on the side and sell them for $99.99.

These are more geared towards the Urban people who want asthetics to be a prime concern. It does not mean they are not functional.

Anything that will hold water will work. Have even used cattle panels bent into a circle with black plastic inside of it before. Not much for asthetics unless you are going for that third world chic look but they held water.

Might work but getting a faucet threaded on might be a bit tough.

Problem with it is you would have to empty it every 15-20 minutes.
