She keeps running away!!!!

I dont know what else to do!!! Penelope keeps trying to run away. First it started with the back door, we installed an extra lock. She learned how to open it. Then it was the gate. She learned how to open the latch! Josh installed a barrel bolt, which works great except Josh and Aryanna keep forgetting to lock it!

Penelope has gotten out of the yard now twice!! Its absolutely TERRIFYING!!! A few of you have been to my house and know how busy my street is! It is absolutely my worst nightmare!!

A week or to ago we were sitting on the couch watching tv, it was evening maybe 7:30 or so. The entire family was playing in the living room. We hear footsteps on our front porch. I said "who would be on the porch this time of night?" I look out the window at the same time josh joked "its prob penelope!" and I scream " IT IS PENELOPE!!!!" I tried to unlock the door but I was so scared my hands could barely hold the key straight! (we have a deadbolt on the front door) I got to her right as she was about to take off running and I pulled her inside. THANK GOD she went to the front porch!! She could have just as easily gone to the street!!! It took me an hour to calm down. My heart was just racing!!

So then a couple days go I was in the dining room cleaning up (we had company coming over) Penelope was right next to me. Next thing I hear was a car horn beep loudly and my gut told me to run outside. (at that very moment I noticed Penelope was no longer next to me!) I ran outside she and Toby were in my neighbors front yard with a jump rope!!! I ran to her (felt like I was floating on air!) and grabbed her and brought her back in. Aryanna had forgotten to relock the gate after coming home from school. Penelope had apparently followed Aryanna back outside (she was playing on the swingset) and Aryanna didnt see her sneak out.

Penelope is so STEALTH about it!! She quietly sneaks in and out and no one even notices!! I've never seen a child do this!!! Aryanna and Justine never did! And they KNOW that you do not leave the yard, PERIOD!!! I cant keep penelope contained!!! I put up the baby gate, she climbs over. I lock the door, she pulls over a chair and gets up high enough to unlock it!!

Josh said she snuck out the door at work once too. He just happened to see her do it and grabbed her. That could have been worse! We have semi's pulling in and out of our work all the time!!!

I dont know what to do with her!!!! I'm half tempted to make her wear a bell like a CAT!!! Just so I can hear her. I told Josh we need to install some bells or some sort of alarm when the doors are opened. because no matter how hard we try, we cant hear her when she sneaks out.

Has anyone experienced a runaway child like this? Do you have any suggestions? I joke, but I need to put her on a chain like a dog to keep her from running off! And she's 2, so she's totally oblivious to the dangers around her! But she's so big for her age (bigger than her almost 4 year old sister) she gives everyone this false sense of maturity!

To add some humor though to this story. The day she was walking in my neighbors yard with Toby (the dog) she was wearing a tshirt that said "trouble's the name" HAHAHA!!! I could just picture someone picking her up and she'd be on the news. "Toddler found wandering the streets alone, wearing TROUBLE tshirt" HAHA!!!

We have an alarm system. It says "Front Door/Back Door" I love it. If Hailey tries to open it....we know. It is the most annoying sound in the entire world.

I have no idea what to do...maybe one of those chain locks on the top of the door and check it all the time.

We have the chain lock, and a hook & eye. not to mention the regular door handle lock.

We dont have an alarm system here. At work the door chimes when you open it. But its not really loud though.

can you increase the volume? I would think you could just install the door alert thing?

Yikes that is scary!!! The only thing I can think of would be getting one of those alarms so that everytime the door is open when you have the alarm on it will make that loud noise. http://www.mypreciouskid.com/wireless-door-alarm.html

I remember Austin used to get out of the house ALL the time and it was worse with him because he would be walking around the neighboorhood nekid!! Stephanie ended up putting a chain lock thinking it would stop him but it didn't..he just used a chair and unlocked it. One time even the cops brought him back. The only thing that made him stop was those door alarms, the first time it went off it scared him and he actually never atemped it again. LOL

That sounds really neat - and what I was thinking of. I didn't know you could actually buy it like that!

Door alarm is probably your best bet. I would think hearing it might even scare her enough not to do it.
