My first reaction (like the woman in the article) was "NO WAY!!!" but yes way... its true!!! This just makes me sick to my stomach!!! I am all for mandetory testing and such to make sure children ARE being taught not just sheltered at home. But an all out ban!! Thats rediculous!!! They said parents need to have a degree for that grade level. Wonder if they can come up with a certification that a parent can take a quick test to show they arent an idiot and perfectly qualified to teach theri children. I dunno.... at least a compromise. (Even though I dont think a parent should have to justify anything!) But wow... this is getting out of hand!!!!!

I heard this a while ago, that it was in the works. I really am livid - I would move to California in a heart beat if it were not for this [and the housing costs]. We did consider it for awhile - DH was looking for a job out there. But once I heard about this we both were turned off. THe public schools are worse then they are here. And private isn't that much better.

What angered me most about that article is these two comments:
Quote:

"A primary purpose of the educational system is to train school children in good citizenship, patriotism and loyalty to the state and the nation," Croskey wrote.

According to the law center's executive director, Leslie Heimov, children should not be educated at home, because they need to be "in a place daily where they would be observed by people who had a duty to ensure their ongoing safety."

So, since when is the primary purpse to teach kids nationalism? That is complete BS. In my opinion, the purpose of public schooling is to ensure an education - reading, writing, math, and other basic skills needed for human survival. Of course I love the US, but that sounds like a socialist country comment. That just hits on so many levels of wrong.

The second also is a slippery slope to me. Don't parents have a duty to provide a safe environment for their children? If the state is SOOO WORRIED couldn't they do what daycares do, an inspector can come in at any given time and observe, look through files, etc. That sounds like a much better approach. BUT OF COURSE, its is california. They are so backed up in there early childhood area - my MIL's preschool hasn't had a state inspection in 3 years. So for them it is easier to say "all or nothing." But I don't agree with it. Because the state can't create a checks and balances - the parents and children suffer. Oh and idiotic parents who really are disadvantaging their children. It makes me livid. A few idiots can screew it up for the reason of honest homeschooling parents. Also, in my opinion homeschooling can begin at birth because learning is occurring all the time. So, what parents have to put the kid in daycare to ensure they are in a safe environment give me a flipping break! I so wish I lived in California, I would be protesting that law to the end of the world.

Sorry this is a huge issue in my world. I don't know if I will home school once she hits Kindergarten or beyond. But it is still my right to decide what type of education is right for my child. I have to advocate for her, since she can not do it herself [yet]. I feel like I would be sacrificing her education by sending her to public schools due to a variety of reasons [based off of research]. It just makes me so angry! I don't think it is fair for parents to say "oh by the way, you need to get a teaching credential which requires a 4 year degree is most cases...and your child is supposed to start Kindergarten in August...so GOOD LUCK!" Or heck, in our economy how in the world are people supposed to go attend a university for the degree while living pay check to pay check. I am able to go to school on grants thank god, but I could not afford to drive an hour up to the university that offers elementary education. ARG! Ok i'm going to just leave it at that.

That's funny that one stuck out for you too. I wrote that quote in my blog because it smelled of socialism.

Ok so I'm not crazy! LOL!

Yeah - part of the reason I love this country is because we can make our own choices and form our own opinions but that is slowly being taken away. I'm just wondering what will be next. The public schools here wouldn't even accept Hailey [even with a religious exception] because she isn't fully vaccinated - nor will be. So there goes another freedom of choice. The thought of gov't sponsored health care makes me sick. Because then we'll have even less choices when it comes to medical care. I totally agree that nobody should be without access to proper medical care, but I like my private insurance thanks!

oh mannn. that stinks to high heaven! america prospered for so long, because there was freedom FROM this kind of crap.

mostly people who home school are Godly people who want their kids to be taught about God, and values! it's going to hit the moral, upstanding citizens the hardest.
