I posted this somewhere else, but wanted to post here also:

We're searching for a house! So I'm full of questions!

I live in a huge city! Within at 15 minute area we have 5 elementary schools, 2 middle schools, and 1 high school; with a projected 2-3 more elementary schools, 1-2 more middle schools, and 1 more high school in the next 5 or so years. All the schools are within the same school district, everything is very standardized from the hiring process to the curriculum. A principle can't consider hiring a teacher unless they meet the schools system's expectations and requirements. They all use the same tests and assessments. So essentially I could move from where I live now across the city and will still get the same "core" educational stuff.

So, here is where I'm kind of torn. 2 of those elementary schools are set to open this August thus have no report cards from the school district/system. The 3 current ones, two are very good and one is ok. We found two houses we like one zoned for the new school with no report card - but has higher-income houses, so stereotypically should be an excellent school. The other school, serves many lower-income families. When I was in high school and did a couple community service projects here - the teachers were very pleasant and really enjoyed us getting involved with their classes (unlike other schools we visited), and the children were eager to learn. So even though you sterotype low-income, these parents really did have their kids bust there butts to learn and make a better lives for themselves was my interpretation. I felt so welcomed when visiting this school as a teenager. The school is flagged though by the school system as needing improvement and is "slipping through the cracks" according to No Child Left Behind Act (which in my professional opinion is a load of crap to begin with).

Another house we like is zoned for the new school and also has a lot of perks. We also can keep looking. Our lease is not up until October 31. So we have time to search and wait for the perfect house.

Let me just add:
The house that we really liked from today is a former model house so it has a TON of upgrades! I mean a TON! lighing, modeling, irrigation system, sound system, deck (a read deck not a patio), landscaped yard, adult trees, HUGE open floor plan with TONS of natural light coming in. They have kids - but the carpets are SPOTLESS! The paint is WOW - perfect colors. Great appliances STAYING! It is perfect is every way shape and form! Its just zoned for a school I'm not so sure about. The commute time will be a PITA either way. Same distance different route. Closer to the airport and freeway (you can hear it more), but it doesn't bother me. We'd seriously just have to box up our stuff and move.

The second house we liked from today, is also in a good neighborhood. Its a corner lot - I could see Hailey anywhere if she went to play at a friends house (sit out back see down one street, sit out front see down the other street). It was smaller, and these people really like gray. The carpets are brand new - and dark going up the stairs and in the bedrooms. The hardwood in the living area had some gaps in it but I think that would be the biggest project - depending on why the gaps are there (they look almost purposeful as they are all over the room, but normally the hardwood pieces are closer together- if that makes sense). The appliances are slightly out of date - but thats a short term issue we could fix (although the other house has all up to date top of the line appliances). It has a bonus room split from the bedrooms....so you walk up the stairs and they part in two directions one to bedrooms one to the bonus room. Which is cool. Although, like I said, its DARK. And the carpets don't really help things. The down stairs has TONS of natural light though. Level yard, and BIG!!! Although not much privacy. The community also has a pool and Basketball court which are a plus for DH.

Both are in our ideal price range. We're not making a decision yet, but I could totally see us in either house.

good luck with the houses . The 2nd one sounds great because it has a good neighborhood , pool and bball court .

I think that place would be the best to find out what those people like as school wise
