Ok lets back up a bit here. I'm 22, since I was 15 I have always gotten my hair cut with layers. Nobody has ever said anything that hey maybe that isn't a great idea with your super thick hair and desire to just let it air dry to pull up in a pony tail. And I'm not knowledgeable about hair in the least so I've never questioned it. It was just the thing to do in High school, and continued into adulthood.

Well flash forward to today. I went to Great Clips, the lady who cut my hair at first I was really turned off by her because she was really quiet. I sat down and I'm telling her my delemia. I'm tired of the same old, same old because my hair is super thick, I'm lazy and don't want to do my hair - I just like to throw it up in a pony tail and don't like to blow dry or anything like that. That I normally get layers and blah blah blah. I told her I wanted it cut to just above my shoulders though which is about 4 inches of hair. She said "well layers will my your hair appear thicker with more volume. I don't think you want it to appear or thicker or have more volume. I think you'd like your hair better and it would be more manageable for you if you skip the layers." I was in total shock. Nobody has ever told me this before! EVER! She pointed out my "mob" of mess in the back of my hair from how unmanaged the previous layers were.
She said, "lets do this. Try it for a week without layers. If you don't like it come back and I'll add the layers - but I think you'll really like it without the layers." So I have my receipt and if I change my mind I'll go back.

I get home, and I'm pointing out to DH what the stylist was talking about with the layers. He said "oh yeah those always drive me crazy - I'd rather your hair have no layers. It looks cuter that way." WHAT?!!! We've been together for ummm how many years now and You are jUST NOW telling me this?! You can still see the ends for the very first layer they have about 4-5 more inches before my hair will be all one length. So he was noticing that layer and said "yeah its always so frizzy and just not cute." Thanks, babe love you too! You could have told me this ummmm say maybe 5 years ago?! :sigh why I love my hubby right?

See now I have EXTREMELY thick hair. Prob a lot like yours (i've seen how thick your hair is). And its really frizzy because it wants to curl, but its too thick so the curl just pulls out. So its a frizzy wave. It took me YEARS of trying different haircuts to find the right one. With no layers on thick hair your hair will do the triangle thing. If you've never gone without layers you dont know what I mean. but trust me... you'll hate it!!! It will be super poofy at the bottom and flat on the top. (although if its always in a pony tail you might not notice)

I get LONG layers. The longest layer is long enough to pull back into a pony tail. (that gives you an idea) I say there are two main lengths to my hair. Full length on the bottom and a long layer on top (That ends about at my chin, a little longer)

Then THIN THIN THIN THIN THIN!!!!!!!! Get your hair thinned!!! You want to go to a stylist that KNOWS what she is doing!! If she thins wrong it wont look right. I like to get my hair thinned with the scissor thinners... not the razor. (stylist will know what i'm talking about) This will take away about half the bulk! Your hair will be able to style. it will dry faster! It wont frizz up!! You will LOVE your hair thinned!!!! Trust me!!!!! I've seen your hair.... you'll love it! Your head wont hurt either! (you get headaches from your heavy hair) You'll also use less shampoo!! HAHA You can also grow your hair out now and enjoy it longer because it wont be so bulky.

I usually get it thinned every 4-6 months. (my hair grows slow) typically the stylist will thin it out every other haircut. Unless I let too much time between cuts. kwim?

They've used both thinning things on my hair and it never makes a difference (I typically get 4-5 inches cut at a time though, so that alone makes my head feel lighter.)

I don't remember my hair being frizzy when I was younger -- before i started doing the layer thing. How long does your hair have to be have "long" layers. I really like my hair shorter - shoulder length. Maybe when I'm down in FL I'll see if my aunt can squeese me in with her hair person. I'm so knowledgeable about hair, LOL! When I do the 2 layer thing (done that in the past....) the top layer does a flip out wierd looking thing and then the bottom flips out on the sides then flips in, in the back.

i had layers when my hair was short. Go to myspace and click on "My Photos". (the main default album) You can see pictures of my hair over the years. HAHA its been short. I now have it grown out where the longest layer is to my bra strap in the back and the shortest is chin length.

If you couldnt tell a difference on thinning... have them thin more! Like I said, you want someone with thinning experience. Some stlyists are scared to take too much out. They dont have the confidence or experience. if you dont notice a difference, have them do more! If i dont thin my hair I can't get it to do anything.
