Sixers look to Build on Last Season's Progress

Things could not look any different for the 76ers to start the 1991 season. After mediocre results, Charles Barkley and Sherman Douglas are gone, having been replaced by Charles Oakley and sharpshooter Mitch Richmond as the new face(s) of the 76ers. Team officials are hoping their arrival signals the start of a new breed of Sixers basketball.

The Sixers came out of the gate rolling last season, beginning with a 20-12 record but the team started to fade and a complete overhaul was in order. Deadline day deals sent Charles Barkley to the Mavericks along with Lionel Simmons and the 91 1st for Richmond and Oakley. Sherman Douglas was later sent to those same Mavericks, in exchange for Kenny Smith and that 91 1st they had previously received. When all was said and done, the moves propelled the Sixers to a 17-4 finish, a 46-36 record and the 6th seed in the competitive Eastern Conference.

The Sixers ran into a buzzsaw known as the Miami Heat and were swept right out of the postseason, but to management, their appearance in the postseason is a sign of things to come.

"We feel our team turned a corner this season, look for us to do some damage next season."

Next season has arrived, lets take a look at the parts that make this Sixers team go.

Center: There was a lot of movement at the Center position for the Sixers. Stacey King begin last season as the started, but was replaced by Randy Breuer around the all star break. Breuer struggled and the team re-inserted King into the starting lineup, and that was where he finished the season. Despite all that, Breuer was re-signed and re-inherits that starting position. For Now...

There is expected to be heavy competition for the Center spot this preseason. Stacey King is still very much in the plans and a pair of 1st round picks (Victor Alexander and Lorenzo Williams) also will be given the opportunity to win the center position. Brad Lohaus was also brought in recently for his defense and the touch he provides from the outside. Look for fierce competition this preseason.

Power Forward: There is no competition here. Charles Oakley is one of the better rebounders in the league and his role will be an important one for a Sixers team that figures to shoot the ball a lot.

Lorenzo Williams was drafted to provide defense and energy and will also contribute some very valuable minutes.

Small Forward:As of now, George McCloud is the starter at SF, but things could change very quickly.

Mitch Richmond is slotted to play the shooting guard position right now, but a personnel move or a poor preseason for McCloud could see a shift. 1st round pick Todd Day and Johnny Newman will also get minutes at the position.

Shooting Guard: Mitch Richmond is the starter. The only way he does not start at this position is if the team decides to shift some players around. Beginning the season, shooting guard is Mitch Richmond's position.

Todd Day will get the majority of the backup minutes here, while Johnny Newman will also see some time.

Point Guard: This is a position where the competition will be on. Johnny Dawkins is expected to be the starter when the season begins.

However, don't be fooled by the man who lines up here to begin each game. Kenny Smith will also get a lot of minutes at the position in the hopes one of them will seperate themselves in time for the postseason.

The gameplan will call for an up-tempo, shoot like there's no tomorrow type offense, and ultimately the players on the floor will be the ones best suited for running that gameplan.

With a much deeper bench and a new gameplan to follow, a new breed of Sixers basketball has grown in Philadelphia. The fans hope the results will follow.
