1991 SSBL Midwest Division Preview With the 1991 season just around the corner, this article serves as a preview to each division. It will give an insight to every team, such as key players, key additions, etc. It's going to be tough for the Hawks to repeat, unless they can make some trades. The division highlighted in this article is the Midwest Division. Dallas MavericksLast season's record: 38-44 The Mavs had a very disappointing 1990 season, especially after all of their trades that they made. In the offseason, having the assets, the Mavs tried to score big by bringing in a marquee player like MJ, Ewing, or DRob. However, that plan failed after the other GMs decided to hang on to their studs. However, after a few smaller moves (Shrempf and Ellison) and probably one of the best TCs in the league, getting that marquee player shouldn't mean much anymore. Now, the Mavs have one of the most complete lineups in the league. With that, the Mavs look to change their fortunes this season. Key Additions: SF Detlef Schrempf FC Pervis Ellison Key Losses: None Probable Starting 5: C Rony Seikaly PF Charles Barkley SF Chris Mullin SG Drazen Petrovic PG Sherman Douglas Denver NuggetsLast season's record: 46-36 The Nuggets really started off last season slow, but were able to find their winning ways and ended up having a good season. The Nuggets reached the Western Conference Semi-finals, only to lose to the Warriors in 5 games. The Nuggets are one of the older teams in the league which is great when it comes to experience. I expect the same results from the Nuggets and maybe a camp or two could help their chances. Resigning F Terry Cummings was really big for the Nuggets. Key Additions: None Key Losses: None Probable Starting 5: C Sam Bowie PF Hot Rod Williams SF Terry Cummings SG Byron Scott PG Magic Johnson Houston RocketsLast season's record: 37-45 The Rockets had yet another disappointing 1990 campaign. So far, nothing seems to work out with this franchise. They had chances to land players like MJ and DRob, but were in the same boat like the Mavs. However, this franchise is not too far off. Chapman having a rough TC hurts though. Bringing in a player like C Dale Davis was a good move for the Rox because he fits exactly what the Rox needed: Defense and Rebounding. Now, the Rox will need to make some trades if they are to see any improvements. As of now, they are a bubble Playoff team. Key Additions: C Dale Davis Key Losses: None Probable Starting 5: C Dale Davis PF Buck Williams SF Glen Rice SG Rex Chapman PG Terry Porter Minnesota TimberwolvesLast season's record: 27-55 Last season was not good for the TWolves. However, the offseason was not that bad for them. They drafted C Dikembe Mutombo, who should be one of the top C's in the league for years to come. Overlooked in the draft was SG Alberto Herreros. He was a scoring machine and star in Europe, and is coming off of a good TC for the TWolves. They also brought in some key FAs in GF Gerald Wilkins and PG BJ Armstrong. This should be another season where the TWolves make the lotto. Key Additions: C Dikembe Mutombo PG BJ Armstrong SG Alberto Herreros GF Gerald Wilkins Key Losses: None Probable Starting 5: C Dikembe Mutombo PF Jayson Williams SF Gerald Wilkins SG Alberto Herreros PG BJ Armstrong San Antonio SpursLast season's record: The Spurs decided it was time to rebuild last season. They were able to add young talent across the board and were able to shore up all of their 1sts. They were hoping to land a SF in the draft but instead went with C Stanley Roberts. They ended up getting their SF, Reggie Lewis, via trade. They also picked up shot blocking machine FC Manute Bol, who should be a cash cow for the Spurs. The Spurs had a decent TC, but Maxwell and Radja didn't do that much. Anderson however continues to improve. The Spurs have options in that they could probably trade around an instantly become a playoff team. Key Additions: C Stanley Roberts FC Manute Bol GF Reggie Lewis Key Losses: None Probable Starting 5: C Stanley Roberts PF Manute Bol SF Reggie Lewis SG Vernon Maxwell PG Kenny Anderson Utah JazzLast season's record: 44-38 The Jazz are coming off of a good season, one that took the Warriors to 7 games in the 1st rd of the Playoffs. There's no doubt that the Jazz are aging. However, this group know's how to get it done. Lever and Pierce continue to show that they still have something left in the tank. West had a good TC, with his rebounding improving. To me, I really think the Jazz should rebuild. Their players are all old and the Jazz have all their 1sts. Trading for younger talent and picks would be the best for this team at this point. Key Additions: PG Greg Anthony Key Losses: GF Johnny Newman C Herb Williams Probable Starting 5: C Mark West PF Rodney McCray SF Lionel Simmons SG Ricky Pierce PG Fat Lever Vancouver GrizzliesLast season's record: 46-36 After two good season, the Grizz GM has decided to rebuild. Trading F Larry Nance and GF Reggie Lewis is proof to this claim. As of now, the Grizz have two good building blocks in PG Robert Pack and FC Antonio Davis. Both Pack and Davis had good TCs, Davis improving more. The Grizz also have their 1sts, which is a huge plus when rebuilding. This season should be long for the Grizz, but with enough patience, this team could be back where it has been the last two seasons in no time. Key Additions: PG Robert Pack GF Bernard King Key Losses: None Probable Starting 5: C Antonio Davis PF Kenny Williams SF Bernard King SG Gerald Glass PG Robert Pack |
