"1991 SSBL Pacific Division Preview"

With the 1991 season just around the corner, this article serves as a preview to each division. It will give an insight to every team, such as key players, key additions, etc. It's going to be tough for the Hawks to repeat, unless they can make some trades. The division highlighted in this article is the Pacific Division.

Posted Image Golden State Warriors
Last season's record: 50-32
The Warriors jumped on the broad shoulders of C Hakeem Olajuwon, and they enjoyed a great ride. Hakeem won MVP and the Warriors made it all the way to the Finals, only to lose to the Hawks in 5 games. The Warriors had an important offseason because they need one more nice scorer on the team to get over the hump. However, they failed to do that. They traded Bouges for peanuts and let Bol walk. Hakeem is great and all, but I just don't see them making it all the way to the finals again this season. Harper was able to improve his Outside shot which is good for the Warriors.
Key Additions:
PG Dee Brown
Key Losses:
FC Manute Bol
Probable Starting 5:
C Hakeem Olajuwon
PF Jack Sikma
SF Billy Thompson
SG Ron Harper
PG Tony Smith

Last season's record: 35-47
The Clippers have not been able to find any success so far. They also overachieved last season. My problem with this team is that can't seem to keep any kind of talent on their team. Bringing in Bogues was a decent move, but why have two PGs? Bringing in Thrope was nice, but does this team really need him and his contract? I question the Long signing as well, although some other GMs feel it's not that bad of a signing, considering it's cheap. I really suggest the Clippers GM to start trading all those picks he has and hold on to talent, or this team will be in the hole for seasons to come.
Key Additions:
F Otis Thorpe
C Luc Longley
PG Muggsy Bogues
Key Losses:
None
Probable Starting 5:
C Luc Longley
PF Danny Manning
SF Otis Thorpe
SG Rod Strickland
PG Muggsy Bogues

Last season's record: 29-33
The Lakers are still building their team, but are in good shape. They brought in a promising player in SG Dennis Scott, who whould be a fine Outside scorer in the league. PF Shawn Kemp finally had a nice TC, improving his Def and Inside scoring. This should be another long season for the Lakers, but they are in good shape. They should have two lotto picks, their own and the Bucks. Maybe they can score some more luck with the Bucks 1st ;) .
Key Additions:
SG Dennis Scott
SG Dennis Hopson
Key Losses:
PG BJ Armstrong
Probable Starting 5:
C Armen Gilliam
PF Shawn Kemp
SF AC Green
SG Dennis Scott
PG Pooh Richardson

Posted Image Phoenix Suns
Last season's record: 43-39
Although the Suns lost in the 1st rd of last year's Playoffs, last season was very promising for this ball club. Everyone underestimated them in the beginning, and then teams took them more seriously, as their 2nd half wasn't nearly as good. To make things even better for them, they scored the #1 pick via the Bucks and drafted promising F Larry Johnson. This was the exact player the Suns needed, a potential 20 pt scorer. Now, with icing on the cake, the Suns had one of the better TCs around the league. Barros, Majerle, Mills, and Campbell all improved. Things are looking really promising in the Valley of the Sun.
Key Additions:
F Larry Johnson
PG Darrell Armstrong
Key Losses:
None
Probable Starting 5:
C Elden Campbell
PF Larry Johnson
SF Dan Majerle
SG Dell Curry
PG Dana Barros

Posted Image Portland Trailblazers
Last season's record: 48-34
Led by superstar PF Karl Malone, the Blazers enjoyed their best season thus far. Malone and Co. were able to make it all the way to the Western Conference Finals, but The Dream was just too much, as the Blazers lost in 7 games to the Warriors. The Blazers look to finally get over that hump and bring a Championship throphy to Portland. However, it won't be easy for them. The Blazers had an iffy TC, which will hurt their chances. Their key players Malone, Corbin, and Marciulionis all dropped some in TC. The only bright spot was Rasmussen. I feel like the Blazers will have to improve via trade now if they want to get farther than WCF.
Key Additions:
PG Tom Garrick
PG Charles Smith
SF Richard Dumas
Key Losses:
None
Probable Starting 5:
C Blair Rasmussen
PF Karl Malone
SF Tyrone Corbin
SG Sarunas Marciulionis
PG Danny Ainge

Posted Image Sacramento Kings
Last season's record: 50-32
The Kings exercised some great moves last season as their GM won GMOTY. However, after a great regular season, the Kings hit a bad matchup with the #8 seed Sonics in the 1st rd, losing in 4 games. Their GM was really frustrated and he had reason to be. With a new season, the Kings will probably have a similar regular season. TC was a wash for them pretty much, as some key guys improved while other key guys dipped some. Camping SG Steve Smith was a good move.
Key Additions:
None
Key Losses:
None
Probable Starting 5:
C Brad Daugherty
PF Taylor Person
SF James Worthy
SG Steve Smith
PG Spud Webb

Posted Image Seattle Supersonics
Last season's record: 40-32
The Sonics had a good season last season, especially after they traded for SF Tom Chambers. The Sonics put up a good fight and almost made it to the WCF, but lost in 7 games to the Blazers. Believe it or not, but I see the Sonics having an even better season than last season. Putting two good scorers with the best passer in the league PG John Stockton, and your team should go just fine. The Sonics need a younger C though.
Key Additions:
FC Zan Tabak
PG Dennis Johnson
Key Losses:
PG Charles Smith
Probable Starting 5:
C Robert Parish
PF Dennis Rodman
SF Tom Chambers
SG Xavier McDaniel
PG John Stockton
