"1991 SSBL Draft Analysis: Eastern Conference" The 1991 offseason is finally here. Congrats to SG Reggie Miller and the rest of Atlanta Hawks being the 1990 SSBL Champs! Everyone anticipated C Alonzo Mourning coming out, but he decided to stay another year in college. This draft might not produce many stars, but there is still solid talent across the board. All in all, this might not be as bad of a draft as everyone anticipates. "The Eastern Conference" Boston CelticsTeam needs: Any Kind of Youth Analysis: 2nd rd picks: PF Anthony Avent, SF Larry Stewart, PG John Crotty I mainly like Avent here. He should be a decent back up in the league. Stewart and Crotty will most likely get no PT. Final Grade: C Miami HeatTeam needs: Perimeter Defenders Analysis: TRADED FOR C BRIAN WILLIAMS FROM CLIPPERS Final Grade: B New Jersey NetsTeam needs: Another Scorer, SF Analysis: #9 pick: The Nets went with one of the best scorers out of college, SG Calbert Cheaney. Cheaney is still the Big Ten's All-Time Scorer at 2,613 points. Being that scoring was a need, this was the perfect fit. Cheaney comes in young and raw into the league, but he has the potential to be a possibly option in this league. He won't be no superstar, but should be a good starter. Nice pick. #20 pick: The Nets went big, this time with a raw 7'1" PF Gregor Fucka. Fucka is pretty well unknown, as he is a prospect from Italy. The Nets don't have anything to lose and should leave him in Europe wi let him develop. #28 pick: The Nets went big yet again and took PF Doug Smith. I would've liked a SF with this pick, maybe a total project here. Final Grade: B- New York KnicksTeam needs: Outside Scoring Analysis: 1991 1st was traded to Nets for FC Mike Gminski 2nd rd pick: PG Ty Moseler Considering their 1st was late and they got good value in Gminski, this draft was meaningless for the Knicks. Final Grade: B Orlando MagicTeam needs: Shot Blocking, Outside Scoring Analysis: #13 pick: The Magic took a gamble here and went with SG Mark Macon. With Robertson already their starting SG, I don't really like this pick for the Magic. They should've traded it with an expiring Smith for a better rebounder and defender. Pack should become a good defender and ball handler. Final Grade: C+ Philadelphia 76ersTeam needs: SF, Shot Blocking Analysis: #15 pick: The Sixers play with an outside oriented offense, so an outside shooting SF would be nice. However, it looks like Richmond will be able to play SF. Therefore, a SF wasn't really needed. Anyways, the Sixers selected SF Todd Day. Day is more known for his inside scoring, so the Sixers should've selected more of a C. #21 pick: The Sixers salvage themselves by going big and drafting PF Lorenzo Williams. Williams will never be a scoring type, but will do the dirty work off the bench, hustling, rebounding, and playing great defense. This is a good fit for the Sixers. #29 pick: The Sixers finished out the 1st rd with C Victor Alexander. Alexander shoud've gone earlier in my opinion, so the Sixers get good value here. Alexander will serve as a very nice back up and should fill in well when their starting C is out with injury. Final Grade:B Washington BulletsTeam needs: Shot Blocking, Inside Presence Analysis: 1991 1st was traded for FC Bill Laimbeer Laimbeer was a good pickup, but didn't help them repeat. Final Grade: B- Atlanta HawksTeam needs: Nothing. Won the Ship. Analysis: #19 pick: The champion Hawks went out and paid a hefty price to get what ultimately became Eric Murdock. With Ainge aging, Murdock could become a nice backup for the Hawks. I like Murdock's defense. However, I feel like the Hawks could've gone big, especially bringing in some rebounding. Final Grade: C+ Charlotte HornetsTeam needs: Outside Scoring Analysis: 1992 first was in a deal for GF Dale Ellis. 2nd rd pick: SG Lamont Strothers Considering their 1st was late and included in a deal for Ellis, this draft was also meaningless for them. Final Grade: B Chicago BullsTeam needs: Bigs, Rebounding, Shot Blocking Analysis: #4 pick: The Bulls went out and got the #1 SF on the board to me, SF Billy Owens. Owens has one of the most developed offensive ratings in the draft. He is also a solid defender and avg. rebounder. He also has the ability to play some PF if the Bulls need him there. With this pick, CRob becomes even more expendable. Regardless, I really like this pick for the Bulls. Grade (thus far): A- Cleveland CavaliersTeam needs: Shot Blocking, Rebounding, SG Analysis: #12 pick: The Cavs really suffered because of their lack of defense and rebounding. With the main big men off the board, the Cavs addressed their hole at SG with Stacey Augmon. He won't ever be an outside scorer, but he's a good defender and a nice fit for an inside oriented offense. Augmon becomes an instant starter for the Cavs and should have a good long career with them. Final Grade: B Detroit PistonsTeam needs: Rebounding, SF Analysis: #8 pick: The Pistons filled their hole at SF with Rick Fox. Fox was one of the top SF's on the draft board, mainly behind Owens. Fox is a very savvy player. He is very fundamental and has the potential to be a good defender and decent oustide shooter. Good pickup for the Pistons. Final Grade: B+ Indiana PacersTeam needs: Shot Blocking, 3 PT shooting Analysis: Traded SF Todd Day to the Sixers. http://s1.zetaboards.com/ssblv3/topic/2126587/1/#new The Pacers will get a first and a much needed big man. Final Grade: B- Milwaukee BucksTeam needs: Shot Blocking, Rebounding, Inside Scoring Analysis: #26 pick: The Bucks really needed a big man but instead went with another guard in SG Randy Brown. Brown can handle the ball some, so he should be a decent combo guard. He will be valued because of his defense. With the Bucks hoping to resign SG Otis Smith and already having Floyd, I don't see Brown getting significant PT. Luckily, the Bucks only paid $400 for this mistake of a pick. The Bucks also delivered the #1 pick which became SF Larry Johnson. Not a good draft day for the Bucks at all. Final Grade: D+ Toronto RaptorsTeam needs: SG, Scoring, Rebounding Analysis: #3 pick: The Raptors had the best odds at getting the #1 pick, but the lotto wasn't kind to them. They ended up with the #3 pick, and went with a shocker, PF Chris Gatling. The Raptors did scout him, so Gatling could have some room to grow. However, he is listed as a PF and I feel that Divac is a better fit there. They need more scoring and Gatling is a really raw scorer right now. He is also a mediocre rebounder for being a big man. Unless he can play C effectively, don't like this pick at all. Final Grade: C+ Edited by Maverick41, Aug 17 2009, 11:28 PM.

Hmm, although I do need youth, I'd say a bigger need for my team is an elite rebounder. |

Raptors really got robbed as the top 2 players are in a whole other league compared to the others. Got a B. Yay

You're right about that if you graded this according to how much the drafted players are going to help their respective teams this season as opposed to how well the teams drafted according to need. After all, I did go out an get "any kind of youth." But who knows - guys like Avent could find a role if TC is nice to us. And as for Larry Stewart, the guy averaged 10.4 ppg his rookie season. Why not at least try him out for that reason alone? |

Said i needed shot blocking and 3pts..well i was hoping Pack would fall to me and of course he went 14th when i had the 15th pick...really didnt like much else left so i dealt the pick to Philly for a pick next year and a much needed big man...now we just need to find someone to backup the PG spot hehe |
