"1991 SSBL Draft Analysis: Western Conference" The 1991 offseason is finally here. Congrats to SG Reggie Miller and the rest of Atlanta Hawks being the 1990 SSBL Champs! Everyone anticipated C Alonzo Mourning coming out, but he decided to stay another year in college. This draft might not produce many stars, but there is still solid talent across the board. All in all, this might not be as bad of a draft as everyone anticipates. "The Western Conference" Dallas MavericksTeam needs: Shot Blocking, Better Bench Players Analysis: 2nd rd pick: PG Doug Overton Final Grade: C Denver NuggetsTeam needs: Rebounding, Outside Scoring Analysis: 2nd rd pick: SG Von McDade Final Grade: C Houston RocketsTeam needs: Rebounding, Shot Blocking, Bigs Analysis: #10 pick: Rumor had it that the Rox were lined up to land a marquee player, either Robinson from the Heat or MJ, but those deals fell apart. This pick was included in those deals supposedly. Regardless, the Rockets drafted FC Dale Davis who I really like. He might never be a 15-20 type guy, but I love his defense and rebounding. He is exactly what the Rox need, that's if they end up keeping him. He comes in as an instant starter for the Rox. Final Grade: B+ Minnesota TimberwolvesTeam needs: PG, SG, Scorer, PF, C, Shot Blocking Analysis: Pick #2: After trading away their franchise player in PG Kevin Johnson, the TWolves made it clear they want to start building around a new player. Getting Deke was really solid and a really safe pick. I feel that he doesn't have a lot of potential, but he's going to be an anchor for the TWolves defense and great rebounder. Definitely could win a few DPOY awards before his career is all said and done. #27 pick: The TWolves went with SG Alberto Herreros with this pick. Coming from Spain, Herreros is a very talented scorer, and is thought of as one of the most gifted scorers that Europe has to offer. The TWolves are still building their team, so they have nothing to lose. Final Grade: A- San Antonio SpursTeam needs: Shot Blocking, Scoring, Better Defenders Analysis: #6 pick: The Spurs were hoping to land SF Billy Owens, but instead landed the biggest and badest mofo this draft has to offer. He is literally the biggest at 7'0" 285 lbs. With this pick, this makes Davis expendable, as I see Dino fiiting the Spurs team better. His defense and rebounding are more developed than his offense, but the Spurs GM is committed to improving Roberts by all means. I really like this pick because this gives the Spurs some great toughness and someone who can literally clog the paint. If his offense can really improve, he'll be a nice pick in this draft. Final Grade: A- Utah JazzTeam needs: Any Kind Of Young Talent Analysis: #17 pick: Needing young talent, the Jazz went with PG Greg Anthony. Anthony is one of the more developed players in this draft because he is 24. Therefore, he shouldn't have that much potential. With Lever getting older, Anthony could be the next in line as the heir at PG for the Jazz. Anthony won't be known for his offense, more for his ball handling and defense. Final Grade: B- Vancouver GrizzliesTeam needs: SF, PF Analysis: #14 pick: The Grizzlies are rebuilding, so any kind of young talent is good for them. However, they made a really nice pick by taking the #1 PG on my board in Robert Pack. Pack becomes the instant starter with Dawkins traded away. Final Grade: B+ Golden State WarriorsTeam needs: PG, SF, PF Analysis: #22 pick: By trading PG Muggsy Bogues, the Warriors had a hole at PG. They went with what was a good and safe option with PG Dee Brown. Brown is an athletic PG who has competition with Coles and Smith currently ahead of him. I would've liked the Warriors to have gone with a big man of SF here. #25 pick: The Warriors went big by selecting PF Shaun Vandiver. Vandiver looks to be more of a scorer than rebounder and defender. I would've liked Alexander again here with this pick. Final Grade: B- Los Angeles ClippersTeam needs: SG, SF, C, Scoring, Rebounding, Shot Blocking Analysis: Pick #7: The Clippers tried to offer this pick in all of their "great" offers for marquee players, but no one bit the bait. Instead, they made a very questionable selection in C Brian Williams. Williams will probably serve as a very good backup in his career and maybe fringe starter. This was not a good pick, especially with C Dale Davis around. DRAFT RIGHT TRADED TO MIAMI. Pick #11: The Clippers went with another big man with this pick by selecting C Luc Longley. Longley is more known for his defense. He is one of the tallest players in the draft which is solid for the Clippers. However, with the selection of Williams, and already having Manning, you have to question this pick. Final Grade: C Los Angeles LakersTeam needs: SG, Rebounding, Outside Scoring Analysis: #5 pick: The Lakers went with the top rated SG on my board in Dennis Scott. Coming into the draft, Scott is the best Outside shooter. Therefore, he fits the Lakers perfectly. He is a raw defender, but that should develop more over time. Scott should be a nice option for the future and a nice piece to surround Kemp with. Kemp and Scott have a potential to form a nice Inside/Out combo. Final Grade: A- Phoenix SunsTeam needs: PG, Shot Blocking, #1 Type Scorer Analysis: Pick #1: The Suns got very lucky and won the lotto via the Bucks 1st. The Suns had a very balanced offense last season, but they are still lacking that clear cut #1 type scorer. LJ or Deke would've been a perfect fit for their team. LJ has the potential to be a good scorer, so the Suns went with their gut and took him 1st instead of Deke. Final Grade: A Portland TrailblazersTeam needs: Rebounding, Shot Blocking, 3PT Shooter Analysis: #18 pick: The Blazers could really use some scoring from the outside. Instead, they took a GF Tony Dumas, who is a gifted inside scorer and should be playing SG and not SF. Marciulionis already holds the SG position for the Blazers, and also Dumas isn't that great of a defender, so he might have a hard time finding some PT. Dee Brown could've possibly have been a better fit. Final Grade: C+ Sacramento KingsTeam needs: 3 PT Shooter Analysis: #24 pick: After a disappointing season, the Kings went with the best International prospect on my board, PG Sasha Dordevic. Sasha is big for a PG, weighing 200 lbs., so he should be able to bully around PGs in the league. He is 24, so his potential is questionable. One good TC out of him, and the Kings could have a nice backup or trade chip. Final Grade: B Seattle SupersonicsTeam needs: Outside Scoring, Better Offense From 4 and 5 Analysis: #23 pick: The Sonics went with a big man in C Zan Tabak. Tabak is an intriguing pick, but I would've liked Alexander, being that who knows how well Tabak will translate to the league. This might be Parish's last season, so Tabak needs to soak in every thing Parish teaches him. Final Grade: B- Edited by Maverick41, Aug 17 2009, 11:01 PM.

The T'Wolves really would have benefited from getting #1 and Larry Johnson rather than #2 and Dikembe Mutombo, while the Suns would have been good with either. The reason I say that is the T'Wolves currently have nothing alongside Mutombo and Mutombo is a 25 year old rookie... by the time they get Mutombo the help he needs he'll be close to 30 and the team's window will be short. I thought the T'Wolves could have shopped the pick maybe a guy like Mutombo who can come in and play right away is valuable to both a contender or a young team on the verge of turning the corner so maybe they can still swing something for a younger prospect.

Agreed. Wasn't a bad pick, but could have been used in jeb's favor in the right deal. |

I think jeb might have been holding out hope to get LJ 2nd. So, now he'll be more apt to make a deal, cos now he knows (hopefully, hehe) what needs to happen in terms of who he needs to acquire in order to keep that team in the mold he designed. But, I wouldn't blame him for keeping Mt. Mutombo if that was what he planned on. |
