1990 SSBL Playoff Preview: Conference Quarterfinals

The 1990 SBBL Playoffs are finally here. There are some new teams in the Playoffs this year, and the same teams are hungrier than ever. There’s no clear cut team that could go all the way because we had a surprise team last season with the Los Angeles Lakers. Another team this season could fair out just like the Lakers during last season’s Playoffs, and my best bet would have to be the Indiana Pacers. For a team to go deep in the Playoffs, the team needs to obviously have a strong and balanced starting 5, have a deep bench, and most importantly, be 100% healthy. Without being healthy, you can kiss your season goodbye. The 1st rd already has some interesting matchups, so let us take a look.

The Western Conference:

[img][/img] #8 Seattle Supersonics () vs [img][/img] #1 Golden State Warriors ()

Looking at this matchup, this could easily be a clean sweep by the Warriors. Why you ask? All because of C Hakeem Olajuwon. The Sonics have no one to stop him, not even Parish. Getting Chambers has helped the Sonics, but that hasn't been enough for the Sonics. They have a 0 differential, which isn't good. The Sonics really need to bring in better frontcourt scoring.
Regular season matchup: Warriors 4-0

Backcourt [img][/img]

The Sonics have a good backcourt with Stockton and McDaniel. Both are having good seasons. McDaniel is the team's leading scorer.

Frontcourt [img][/img]

When you have a C like Hakeem, your frontcourt is going to be dominant, no matter who you put next to him. However, the Warriors have Bol, so let the block party go on.

[img][/img] Bench [img][/img]

These benches are pretty even. The Sonics and Warriors have good backup PGs and SFs.

Maverick41’s pick: [img][/img]

Maverick41’s pick is the WARRIORS. The Sonics won't stand a chance containing Hakeem. Hakeem should walk all over the Sonics and move his team into the next round with a sweep. Warriors in 4.

[img][/img] #7 Utah Jazz () vs [img][/img] #2 Denver Nuggets ()

The Nuggets were able to finally turn their season around, especially after acquiring SG Byron Scott. Adding him really made the Nuggets a well rounded team. The Nuggets thrive on their offense, scoring 100 ppg. Both teams have good PG's in Johnson and Lever. Both teams go as far as their respective PG's take them. I see this series going down to the wire. The X-factor for the Jazz is believe it or not rookie SF Lionel Johnson. For the Nuggets, it has to be C Sam Bowie.
Regular season matchup: 2-2 Split

[img][/img] Backcourt [img][/img]

There backcourts are pretty even, having two very good PG's and above avg. SG's. I would have to say the hungrier PG would have to be Fat Lever, literally and figuritively.

Frontcourt [img][/img]

They are almost even in a sense, but the Nuggets I think have the edge. They are more consistent at scoring.

[img][/img] Bench [img][/img]

Both these teams feature pretty even benches. Newman is nice for the Jazz. Woolridge provides good scoring off the bench for the Nuggets.

Maverick41’s pick: [img][/img]

Maverick41's pick is the NUGGETS. This won't be an easy one for the Nuggets, since the matchup's are pretty even. A big factor I give the Nuggets is that they are playing with a lot of momentum heading into the Playoffs. That's really important, especially mentally for any team. Nuggets in 6.

[img][/img] #6 Phoenix Suns () vs [img][/img] #3 Sacramento Kings ()

The Suns have gotten here because of their scrappiness and high octane offense. The man behind the offense has been sharp-shooting PG Dana Barros. Going with an outside focus to their offense, Curry was a great pickup and has finally found a system he excels in. The Suns also feature possible 6th man of the year candidate G Bo Kimble. He is instant offense off the bench. The Kings are here because of the great moves done by their GM. They have an extremely balanced team. They are getting Person back from injury, so he should give them a big lift come Playoff time. This could be a sweep, especially the way the Suns have played lately.
Regular season matchup: Kings 3-1

Backcourt [img][/img]

This was kind of a hard choice, but I had to go with the Suns. The Suns offense comes through Barros and Curry with their Outside focus, so the they serve more importance team success than Smith and Webb.

Frontcourt [img][/img]

The Kings win here easily. WIth Daugherty, Person, and Lang as there defensive specialist, this crew has all the pieces for having a great frontcourt. The Suns froncourt has potential, but is still young and inexperienced.

Bench [img][/img]

The Kings have a very good 2nd string, most being fringe starters.

Maverick41’s pick: [img][/img]

Maverick41’s pick is the KINGS. The Suns are still too young and inexperienced. The Kings should have their way with these Suns. Person coming back will give the Kings much needed energy and enthusiasm.

[img][/img] #5 Vancouver Grizzlies () vs [img][/img] #4 Portland Trailblazers ()
This is another pretty even matchup. From top to bottom, the teams mirror each other, with the exception of Malone. Malone has had his way with the Grizzlies, having multiple 40-point games against the Grizzlies. The Blazers also added a better defender in Sarunas, who is more than capable of guarding GF Reggie Lewis. The Grizzlies have been up and down as of late, while the Blazers have played really strong. Unless the Grizzlies can contain Malone somehow, I feel the Blazers got this one.
Regular season matchup: 2-2 Split

Backcourt [img][/img]

The Grizzlies have the advantage with Dawkins and Lewis. Lewis is the better defender and scorer than Dawkins, but Dawkins serves as an above-avg defender and decent non-option scorer. The Blazers backcourt is known more for their defense.

Frontcourt [img][/img]

Their C's are pretty even, but Malone serves as the edge, as Nance will struggle against Malone.

Bench [img][/img]

The edge goes to the Blazers, who have a good 2nd string. Williams for the Grizzlies served as a super sub and nice fill in for the injured Nance during the regular season.

Maverick41’s pick: [img][/img]

Maverick41’s pick is the BLAZERS. The Grizzlies will have trouble trying to contain Malone. Therefore, Nance will be in foul trouble and will have trouble staying on the court. Without him, they don't stand a chance because Lewis is not ready to lead a team all by himself. Blazers in 6.
