1990 SSBL Playoff Preview: Conference Quarterfinals The 1990 SBBL Playoffs are finally here. There are some new teams in the Playoffs this year, and the same teams are hungrier than ever. There’s no clear cut team that could go all the way because we had a surprise team last season with the Los Angeles Lakers. Another team this season could fair out just like the Lakers during last season’s Playoffs, and my best bet would have to be the Indiana Pacers. For a team to go deep in the Playoffs, the team needs to obviously have a strong and balanced starting 5, have a deep bench, and most importantly, be 100% healthy. Without being healthy, you can kiss your season goodbye. The 1st rd already has some interesting matchups, so let us take a look. The Eastern Conference: #8 Indiana Pacers () vs #1 Atlanta Hawks ()Looking at this matchup, you would think the Hawks would just blow by the Pacers, and that could happen. But don’t count out the Pacers. Yes, FC Moses Malone will be out for 3 games in the series but the Pacers already have a serviceable big man in FC Kevin Willis. The Hawks feature a high octane offense behind Adams and Miller, so the best way to stop this team is to bear down on defense and stop the fast break. Regular season matchup: Hawks 3-1 Backcourt There’s no question about this one, as the Hawks have probably the most dominating backcourt in the league. Frontcourt With a healthy Moses, I really like the Pacers frontcourt. But with ROTY PF Derrick Coleman, the Pacers win here. Bench The Hawks have a very deep bench at every position. The Pacers tried to acquire some better bench players, but I still don’t think it’ll be enough. Maverick41’s pick: Maverick41’s pick is the HAWKS. The Pacers could be a really dangerous team with Malone, but he’ll be hurt. If the Pacers can keep the series close like 2-1 by game 4, they’ll have a chance with Malone coming back. Hawks in 6. #7 Philadelphia 76ers () vs #2 New York Knicks ()This could be a clean sweep because of New York’s dominating frontcourt. One of the Sixers main problem this season has been health. No one on their team seems to stay healthy. SG Mitch Richmond is going to have to dominate for the Sixers to even have a chance in the league’s Mecca of basketball. Oakley will be really important with his experience and trying to slow down Tarpley. I just love the Knicks defense and of course frontcourt. It’ll be too much for the Sixers to handle. Regular season matchup: 4-0 Backcourt The backcourts are equal here for a few good reasons. The Knicks backcourt doesn’t blow anyone away but, it has more experience and holds up extremely well. The Sixers have an inexperienced Richmond and Smith, but Richmond could come out and have an extremely well series. Frontcourt ![]() There’s no doubt about the Knicks here. Enough said. Bench ![]() The Knicks feature a very nice and deep bench. Their bench specializes on defense, making them a very dangerous defensive team. Maverick41’s pick: Maverick41’s pick is the KNICKS. The Knicks experience and frontcourt will be too much for the Sixers to handle. The Sixers might squeeze out a win out home but it won’t be easy. Knicks in 4. #6 Boston Celtics() vs #3 Miami Heat()This is the first matchup that’s really hard to figure out which team will come out on top. They not only split the regular season matchup 2-2, but a lot of their advantages are cancelled out in the matchups. One thing for sure, the Heat have stayed real consistent this season while the Celtics have at times played really well and then stink for a few weeks. That kind of inconsistency won’t get you deep in the Playoffs. Bird still wants a to win one before he hangs it up, and this could be one of his best and final chances to get that done. Regular season matchup: 2-2 Backcourt ![]() The Celtics win this one with King and Walker. King could have his way with Blackman and Walker has more experience than Skiles. But again, Blackman has more experience than King. Frontcourt Any frontcourt that features Robinson will be really strong. Also, Perkins is not a bad option at PF. The Celtics have been playing a platoon at PF and that has hurt them. Bench ![]() The Celtics went out this offseason and made a lot of moves to try and strengthen their bench and have one of the deepest benches in the league. Maverick41’s pick: Maverick41’s pick is the HEAT. This will be a grueling matchup for both teams and will go down to the wire. I’m calling it now, the Heat win in Game 7 with a buzzer beater by Person with 1.3 left. Heat in 7. #5 Washington Bullets() vs #4 Charlotte Hornets ()This is another matchup featuring teams that are pretty evenly matched up. I love the Hornets defense, while their scoring is pretty balanced. For the Bullets, their defense is good too, but how can you not love SG Michael Jordan. He lives for the Playoffs, so that’s a huge advantage for the Bullets. The Hornets tried to pull off some blockbuster deals to get some kind of star because that’s all that team lacks. I feel like Jordan will repeat his Playoff play from last season and will have his way with the Hornets. Regular season matchup: 2-2 Backcourt The Bullets feature the best SG in the league in Michael Jordan. They also have an underrated PG in Gary Grant. Frontcourt The Hornets win here with Benjamin, Carrol, and Cage. Although getting Laimbeer was a nice move for the Bullets. Bench ![]() The Bullets have good depth, especially in their frontcourt. Maverick41’s pick: Maverick41’s pick is the BULLETS. This could easily go to 7 games because of the even matchup, but MJ will come out on fire and the Hornets will have nothing to douse that fire with. Bullets in 6. |
