1990 SSBL Around The League

With the season heading for the home stretch, here's another edition of SSBL's Around The League. Recently, the season halted for the All-Star break in Miami, and it was a pretty memorable weekend. That will be highlighted. Where have some of these teams come from? I'm talking about two teams, the Phoenix Suns and Sacramento Kings. They will be highlighted. To conclude, trade blocks will be discussed.

The 1990 SSBL All-Star Weekend

The big question heading into this weekend was, would the elite East or the up-and-coming West win the game? As always, the Rookie-Sophomore game begins the weekend.

Rookie/Sophomore game:
In grouped effort, the Rookies went on to beat the Sophomores, 110-104. The Rookie were led by the Bulls PG Gary Payton and the Pacers PF Derrick Coleman. Both Rookies are having a solid year for their respective teams. However, Coleman looks to have the upper hand against all other Rookies for ROTY. As far as the Sophomores, they were led by the Lakers PF Shawn Kemp and Rockets SF Glen Rice. Rice had a great TC and looks like the face of the Rockets rebuild.

3 PT Contest:
An event displaying the sharp shooters from deep is the 3 PT contest. This event favors more of the spot-up shooters. You also need great stamina to get through all the racks. The taller players have usually faired better in this event. The big guns in the event were the Hawks Guard's Michael Adams and Reggie Miller, along with the Bullets SG Michael Jordan and Suns PG Dana Barros. All 4 got into Rd two, with Adams and Miller both going to the finals. However, Adams choked big time and Miller walked away with the throphy, scoring a 21.

Dunk Contest:
This contest is left for last for a reason, because of the awe and excitement it brings to the many fans. The player everyone was looking forward to watching was Bullets SG Michael Jordan. He was the favorite going into the competition. The other contestants were then Mavericks SG Mitch Richmond, Hawks SG Reggie Miller, Magic's SF Clyde "The Glyde" Drexler, and Celtics F Kenny "Skywalker" Walker. Miller, Richmond, and Jordan all made it to the finals, but Jordan finished the competition off with a dunk from the FT line.

All-Star Game:
With the final event, the All-Star game is always played on Sunday. This game features the leagues brightest stars from both conferences. The East enjoyed their home crowd, as the game was held in beautiful Miami. The East were led by the Heats own C David Robinson, along with MJ, Bucks SG Ron Harper, and Pacers SF Scottie Pippen. The West was led by the Nuggets PG Magic Johnson, then Spurs PF Charles Oakley, Blazers PF Karl Malone, Kings SF James Worthy, and Warriors C Hakeem Olajuwon. The East held the West in check in the first half, but the West came out firing in the 3rd quarter. Knowing that this was his game, the best closer and possibly player in the league, SG Michael Jordan, turned it up in the 4th quarter. From that, the East pulled away and won the game 114-99. With his performance, Jordan walked away with MVP honors.

Where Did You Come From?

Every season, there's always some surprise teams that come out from no where. It looked like the first teams, after their solid offseasons, were the Pacers and Mavericks. After both had great starts, they have fizzled out, and both are bubble Playoff teams. The two teams hightlighted here are going to be the Phoenix Suns and Sacramento Kings.

Phoenix SunsPosted Image
The Suns started off last season really great, and then fizzled out, becoming a mid-lotto team. Makinga few trades here and there, and having a solid TC has contributed to their solid 1990 season. This teams strong point is definitely their offense. They currently rank 2nd in the league, avg. 105.1 ppg. Their defense is OK too, holding opponents to 101.5 pts ppg. This gives them a decent differential. Their team MVP has to be without a doubt PG Dana Barros. He might not be your typical pass-first PG, but he knows how to get the job done. SG Dell Curry was also a great pickup in the offseason.

Sacramento KingsPosted Image
I was lucky enough to be able to sit down personally with the Kings GM and interview him. The Kings started the season hot and have yet to let down from that start. They made some really big moves, as they look to be one the best in the West.

Maverick41: "Going into the 1990 season, were you still in a rebuilding mindset or did you want to compete?"

Ashes: "To be honest, I hate rebuilding. Jumping from 8 to 3 in the lotto was really the first luck I've had in any SSBL. Originally I had planned to stick around a rebuild for another season, but the West revealed itself to be very weak. After signing who I had a feeling would contribute (Just not this much) in Taylor Person, I felt my team was set up very nicely for the future. However, after a very strong first sim, it was clear my team could really compete. It was then when I decided to switch from full-out rebuild mode to all-out win now mode. Go Kings!"

Maverick41: "After all of your big moves this season, which would you say is the biggest and most important for team success?"

Ashes: "Well, I've really changed the face of this team, so it's hard to say. Other than Andrew Lang and Spud Webb, the team is completely different. I'd have to say the biggest reason for my team's success is James Worthy. He's one of the best SFs in the league and is the true leader of my squad offensively and defensively. Having a guy like Worthy makes games easier. He may not be a Jordan or Bird in terms of scoring, but he's good for 20 a night and is a lock-down defender. There isn't much more you could ask for from your top player, especially on a team that's as team oriented as mine is. Hopefully Worthy can lead this team far into the playoffs."

Maverick41: "Where else would you like to upgrade on your team, and how will you get that done?"

Ashes: "I'd really have to say my team's frontcourt is pretty set with Daugherty/Lang/Person/Dudley and I like my starting line-up as a whole. It's no secret that I am searching for a great back-up PG. So far, my efforts haven't been met with what I want, but I've found a way to get the players I want for my team so far. I'd be willing to send a 1st or two for a great back-up PG, which is pretty damn good value. I've just got to get into contact with more teams and I'm sure there will be one out there interested in my offer. I feel like with a capable back-up PG my team doesn't really have any holes. I have a bit more time to get it done, so I'm in no rush yet."

Maverick41: "What team scares you the most in the West, and why?

Ashes: "I'm not really scared of any team out West, but the most challenging would definitely have to be the Mavericks now after the great moves they've made. They have two superstars in Barkley and Mullin, which is always a big factor in the playoffs. The one thing that keeps me confident in my team is the fact that only a great PG can probably hurt me, and none of the top tier teams in the West have one. Homecourt will be huge for me in the playoffs, and I look to taking the West with that on my side. However, when it comes to the playoffs, it's a game of match-ups, and the only teams that match-up well with me are the Grizzlies and the Mavericks, and all of our teams are incredibly similar in terms of talent. It'll definitely be interesting in the Western Conference playoffs this year, for sure."

Maverick41: "What team scares you the most in the East, and why?

Ashes: "The scariest team in the East is without a doubt the Atlanta Hawks. My team does not match-up well with them at all. Their strongest positions are my weakest. All teams fear having to meet that backcourt on the hardwood. It'll be a tough task should we meet in the Finals. Hopefully my advantages in the PF/SF categories will lead me to victory should the opportunity arise."

Thanks again for Kings GM Ashes for participating in my Q&A. With that said, the Kings come off another great sim going 7-1. Inless they falter down the stretch, they own the West this season.

Trade Blocks

The trade deadline is fast approaching, so if you are a team that is in need for upgrades, you better hurry. The official date for the trade deadline is August 2nd, 9PM SHARP Central Time. The biggest name on the block by far is Warriors C Hakeem Olajuwon. With that said, we'll start with him and the Warriors.

Golden State WarriorsPosted Image
The Warriors have put everyone on the block, with the most coveted player Olajuwon available. There have been some pretty low-ball offers, which is surprising. He will commend no less than two elite players. So, if you don't have that, I wouldn't even bother offering.

Orlando MagicPosted Image
The Magic also have everyone available. It's hard to figure out what they want to do, but I would think to stay competitive. Drexler and Thomas are their biggest names, but Robertson has been the most sought after player.

San Antonio SpursPosted Image
Having unloaded all of their big name players, the Spurs are now filled with great youth. They also have all their 1sts. As said personally by the Spurs GM, "Honestly, not much. I'd like to add a decent young 3 to go with the other 4 kids in the lineup, push Eackles outta the way a bit. Outside that, I'm pretty much set for the offseason."

Cleveland CavaliersPosted Image
The Cavs look like they might be sellers now, after a rough season. Everyone's available, obviously some are harder to get, but Wilk will need a great offer.

Toronto RaptorsPosted Image
Contending teams that want some decent bench help, look here.

Seattle SupersonicsPosted Image
After getting Chambers, the Sonics feel like they have a good team heading into the Playoffs. If there's one position they would like to upgrade, it would be getting a great big man. They are offering Rodman + Horry.

Utah JazzPosted Image
Also likes their team, but wouldn't mind a backup PG and upgrade at PF.

Dallas MavericksPosted Image
Would like to upgrade their PG and SG positions. Have cash, Sixers 1991 1st, Smith and Sarunas.

Philadelphia 76ersPosted Image
Have put PG Sherman Douglas on the block. Douglas is one of the top young PGs in this league. The Sixers are willing to take on a lesser PG to be able to upgrade their SF position.
