Simmons Enjoying Home Cooking

Philadelphia, Pa- In 1983, 14 year old Lionel Simmons was watching Moses Malone, Julius Erving, Andrew Toney, Bobby Jones and Maurice Cheeks lead the Philadelphia 76ers to an NBA title. Eight years later, a 22 year old Simmons finds himself in the NBA competing for that very same goal, and for his hometown Sixers no less.

Lionel Simmons was born on November 14, 1968 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. As a boy he grew up watching such greats as Hal Greer, Moses Malone and Julius Erving compete for NBA supremacy in Philadelphia. It was those players who inspired Lionel to strive for an NBA career.

As a high school senior, Lionel led South Philadelphia High School to Philadelphia's Public League Championship. After High School, Lionel stayed in the city of Philadelphia to play college basketball with the LaSalle Explorers. While at LaSalle, all Lionel did was become the NCAA's third leading scorer, and the only NCAA player to score 3,000 points and grab 1,100 rebounds. Lionel led LaSalle to three consecutive NCAA tournament appearances, and captured the Naismith and Wooden awards as a Senior. Basketball in the city of Philadelphia was all Lionel Simmons knew.

Fitting that on draft day 1990, the Philadelphia 76ers chose Lionel "L-Train" Simmons out of LaSalle University with the 8th overall pick. Team management was ecstatic to get such a talent at the number 8 pick, and Lionel was ecstatic to be given the opportunity to play in his hometown.

Thirty two games into the 1991 season, Lionel Simmons is enjoying life in the NBA. Playing alongside Charles Barkley and Sherman Douglas, Lionel and the Sixers have a 20-12 record, with Lionel averaging 14.2 points 7 rebounds 2.1 assists 1.3 steals and .9 blocks.

Yep, 32 games in, the NBA home cooking sure tastes good.

I loved Lionel when he was in Sac-town. The L-Train rides again... this time hopefully for longer than a few years.
