1990 SSBL Around The League Here's to the first edition of SSBL Around The League for the 1990 season. This season hasn't left anyone unimpressed, as many hungry teams are making a run for the Ship. Some new teams have emerged from the dumps to contenders, stars have been changing zipcodes, teams already have to deal with the injury bug, and more. This article is meant to highlight the stars of the league, some particular teams' performances, injuries, and trade blocks. THE List: This is the list of the best players at each position. I expect GMs to disagree because thats just plain nature, but come on, this is not an easy list to come up with. C: Hakeem Olajuwon 1990 Stats: 38.3 pts, 13.2 rebs, 4.8 blocks, 52% FG The stats pretty much show why Hakeem is hands down the best Center this league has to offer. Hakeem started the season playing out of this world, avg. 42+ pts, 15+ rebs a game. He's fallen down some to earth, but is still putting up rdiculous numbers. He also has to be the favorite for MVP, if the season were to end right now. His an amazing superstar, but he still needs help in GS. The Dream is the frontrunner for MVP right nowPF: Karl Malone 1990 Stats: 33.9 pts, 10.2 rebs, 53% FG, 78% FT Malone had a tremendous TC, and it has shown with the #'s he's currently putting up. An even more crazier stat is that Malone has been shooting 3's, and even has a good % at 47%. Granted he's only hit 7-15, but still. Malone will muscle you every minute of the game, and will go to the foul line at a very high rate. Malone definitely looks like a lock at PF for the 1st-Team All League. However, just like The Dream, he needs help in Por. Malone had a great offseasonSF: Larry Bird 1990 Stats: 30.2 pts, 9.5 rebs, 48% FG, 89% FT, 37% 3P Dominique and even Mullin could be considered here, but Bird has been better than them this season. At 33, Bird knows his time is going to be up soon. That's why you seem him constantly leaving it out on the floor every single night. The Celtics GM has made some trades to help improve Bird's and the Celtics chances for the Ship, but will it be enough? Bird is hoping the Celtics have enough for the ShipSG: Michael Jordan 1990 Stats: 33.5 pts, 7.7 rebs, 2.6 steals, 48% FG This was another no brainer, as the reigning MVP and Champion is still hungry for even another set of accolades. MJ has been doing his thing, every game with a new supporting cast. Williams degressed a little and it has shown. Outside of those two, the Bullets don't have another solid player putting up good avgs. MJ carried the Bullets on his back last season to the Ship, but can he do it again this season? Can MJ and the Bullets win another Ship?PG: Magic Johnson 1990 Stats: 25.9 pts, 7.0 rebs, 11.2 asts, 55% FG, 48% 3P Magic is having yet another amazing season. He has to be the only player in the league to almost avg. a triple-double a game. He currently leads the league in assists, but has also been turning the ball over a lot. The Nuggets have tried to get more help in Cummings and now Scott, but it hasn't exactly translated well for the Nuggets. Hopefully Scoot will bring better Def and scoring. Can Magic is the only player in the league to avg. close to a triple-doubleTeams' Analysis: I will highlight the teams that have really improved and the teams that have taken a complete turn from good to bad. The Good: Indiana Pacers1990 season record (thus far): 14-7 The Pacers last season already had a good core of Willis, Pippen, and Chapman. Then 3 key moments happened for the Pacers: Trade for a good true PG, drafting a legit PF, and a great TC. Jackson has been a great fit for this team, distributing the ball very well. Coleman has shown why he should've gone #1 in the past draft. Pippen continues his emergence as a star. Definitely a Playoff team without a doubt this season. Dallas Mavericks1990 season record (thus far): 10-6 The Mavs have completely changed their team from last season, with only Richmond leff over from that dreadful 1989 season. By bringing in another star player in Mullin and 3 solid role players, Smith, Laimbeer, and West and drafting a promising rookie Radja, the Mavs look like a Playoff team this season. It should be interesting to see how far they can really get. Sacramento Kings1990 season record (thus far): 11-6 First off, I don't think there's a team with more 1sts than the Kings. However, that's not the issue at hand. The Kings have had some real fortunate events come across their franchise. After a decent 1989 season, they were slated to be a late lotto, only to move up all the way to the #3 spot to draft PG Kenny Anderson. They were able to trade Anderson + for SF James Worthy, which was a solid move for both teams. Also, where the hell did this Taylor Person guy come from? As if he emerged from thin air, he has been having a solid season for the Kings. The Kings are a lock for the Playoffs for sure. The Bad: Los Angeles Lakers1990 season record (thus far): 5-9 Their 0-8 start really surprised me, considering they were only 2 games away from the Finals last season. If anything, I expected them to have a solid season, especially since all their players besides Kemp improved in TC. Now, the Lakers are in rebuilding mode. The Lakers really need to analyze Kemp to see if he's worth having around for their rebuild or to trade him for more assets. Houston Rockets1990 season record (thus far): 5-12 After a promising offseason, the Rockets find themselves back where they shouldn't really be. Rice is making a good impact his first season as a full time starter. Hornacek could really use a camp. This team really needs some leadership, and it has been lacking. Golden State Warriors1990 season record (thus far): 5-7 The Warriors don't look like the same team as they were last season. Yes, they have arguably one of the best players in the league, but that can only get you so far. Having a superstar like him and being unable to trade for an even better supporting cast has landed them on this list. With that said, with Hakeem only being there one and only major asset, you will not find another star to pair with him. Trading away Ainge last season was a mistake, and camping an already awesome player Hakeem was an even bigger mistake. Players like Harper need development way more than him. Cleveland Cavaliers1990 season record (thus far): 6-13 Built around one of top players in this league in Wilkins, the Cavs didn't expect this kind of start. To help with their ugly start, the Cavs went and got star PG Mark Price. So far, that hasn't helped much either. Their defense has been really poor, but is Hornacek that glue guy they miss? No offense to their GM, but resigning Tisdale to that type of contract is really going to hurt their team in the long run. He has to have close to none trade value at the moment. Injury Report: Every season, a crucial injury happens, and it literally kills a team's chances at making a run. PF Ed Pickney, Boston Celtics - Pickney is out 56 days with severe depression. I guess the Boston fans got to the Boston starting PF. Walker will be getting significant PT. C Randy Breuer, Milwaukee Bucks - Breuer is out 26 days with a scratched cornea. The Bucks starting C has been their anchor on defense, and their only true shot blocker. This should no doubt hurt the Bucks. G Gerald Wilkins, New Jersey Nets - Wilkins is out 41 days with a broken leg. Wilkins is a key reserve to the Nets. GF Craig Ehlo, Washington Bullets - Ehlo is out 18 days with a broken collarbone. Ehlo is the Bullets starting SF, so missing a starter for this Bullets team will hurt them for sure. SF Tony Campbell, Cleveland Cavaliers - Campbell is out another 10 days with a broken jaw. He has resumed non-cantact drills. This has definitely hurt the Cavs. F Larry Nance, PG Johnny Dawkins, Vancouver Grizzlies - Nance out 6 more days with severe migraines and Dawkins, 5 days with a sprained wrist. So far so good for the Grizz regardless. GF Dan Majerle, Phoenix Sun - Majerle is out 35 days with a broken skull. This is big loss, as the Suns were looking for a breakout season from Majerle. Trade Talk: This is a highlight of team's main guys on the block and their intentions. Utah Jazz: PG Fat LeverWho knows what the hell the Jazz are doing or what they intend to do with their players, but yeah, Lever seems like can go for yonger talent and picks. What about Pierce, wonder if he could get a star for him... Milwaukee Bucks: Needs a big manThe Bucks want to package this for an upgrade at their PF and C positions. It's nice to have assets, but that can only get you so far...It's a bit Sleepy, but like a Cadillac once you get it Breuing Randy Breuer C 30 7'3'' 263 C+ C- C- A B- C Cadillac Anderson PF 26 6'10'' 230 B D D- B- B D Terry Catledge SF 27 6'8'' 230 B+ C- C- C+ B C Ken Norman SF 26 6'8'' 215 B C- C A- C+ C Otis Smith SG 26 6'5'' 210 B C+ C A C D Scott Brooks PG 25 5'11'' 165 C B B B- D D Sleepy Floyd PG 30 6'3'' 185 C B+ B B- D C Bucks 94 First Bucks 95 First Los Angeles Lakers: RebuildingEveryone is available, including Kemp, who has gotten the most interest. Offer only young talent and picks. Seattle Supersonics: Wants upgrade at SG/SFHorry + picks look like their package for that SG/SF. Los Angeles Clippers: Building for the futureEveryone is available, but who knows if anything will get done with their GMs price tags on his players. San Antonio Spurs: RebuildingThe Spurs have traded away their big guns of Price and Worthy, and only Oakley is left. They are not simply going to pawn him off for shit. Come with your best, or GTFO. Detroit Pistons: Wants better SG or SFEveryone except Ewing is available. Malone will go only if good depth comes back in return, mainly at SG and PF. Picks are also available, but will only go if player coming back warrants it. Pistons are rumored to be offering Dumars + Malone for upgrades. Edited by Maverick41, Jul 19 2009, 04:42 AM.
