1990 SSBL Central Division Preview With the 1990 season just around the corner, this article serves as a preview to each division. It will give an insight to every team, such as, key players, improvements, key additions, etc. The East still looks like it holds the upper hand, but the West did improve as well. It's going to be tough for the Bullets to repeat, inless they can make some trades. The division highlighted in this article is the Central Division of the Eastern Conference. Color key for improvements: Red is always a loss in rating Green = +1 Blue = +2 Purple = +3 Atlanta Hawks Last season's record: 52-30 The Hawks had a really great season, finishing with a tie for 2nd best record in the league with the Warriors. The Hawks have a very balanced team, offering a little bit of everything. Their main scorer is SG Reggie Miller. He improved in the offseason, so look for another strong season from him. Their stop-gap on defense is C Mark Eaton. Age looks like it catching up to him however, as he dipped in TC. The Hawks feature really good depth as well. They should give some camps, if possible, and they should enjoy another strong season and deep Playoff run. Key Additions: None Key Improvements: Will Perdue C 25 7'0'' 240 C+ C- D+ B B B Horace Grant PF 25 6'10'' 235 B C C- A- B- B Rod Higgins SF 30 6'7'' 205 C+ B+ C- A- C+ C Reggie Miller SG 25 6'7'' 190 B A- C+ B- D+ A Charlotte Hornets Last season's record: 48-34 The Hornets had a rocky start, but were able to finish the season strong, starting from the All-Star break. The Hornets don't feature a superstar, just guys that know how to get it done. Not only that, but they have really good depth. The Hornets still lack that really good PF and PG. They have made attempts to land a star PG with picks as their main bait. It'll be interesting to see what they can manage to do. Ellis and Benjamin are the two studs for the Hornets. Until some key moves are down, they should be a bubble Playoff team this season. Key Additions: None Key Improvements: Pervis Ellison PF 23 6'10'' 225 C+ C- D+ A- B- C Doc Rivers PG 29 6'4'' 185 C B B- A+ C- C Chicago Bulls Last season's record: 35-47 The Bulls had a decent season, with their PG and SG positions hurting them. They already feature a star in SF Chris Mullin. West and Daugherty both had good TC for the most part, which is key. However, they still lack that PG and SG. THe market is limited for a premier PG at the moment. They might have to move Mullin or their bigs in order to land that PG. The Bulls have had some positive talks, but no moves have been generated. Mullin should have yet another awesome season. Key Additions: None Key Improvements: Brad Daugherty C 25 7'0'' 263 A- C- C- B- B+ C Mark West PF 29 6'10'' 246 B C- D A B- C Chris Mullin SF 27 6'7'' 220 B- A- C A C B Dennis Hopson SG 25 6'5'' 200 B C+ C B C- C Cleveland Cavaliers Last season's record: 49-33 The Cavs were having a solid season until they lost PF Wayman Tisdale to injury. This season, they look to turn things around with hopefully an improved ball club. Their superstar player is GF Dominique Wilkins. They were able to resign PF Wayman Tisdale, but he dipped in TC. That resigning could potentially haunt the Cavs cap flexibility in the future. Drafting FC Antonio Davis was a huge +. This team also needs a much better PG. Key Additions: FC Antonio Davis SF Tony Campbell Key Improvements: Antonio Davis PF 22 6'9'' 215 B- C- D+ B+ B B Dominique Wilkins SG 30 6'8'' 215 A- B C A- C+ B Detroit Pistons Last season's record: 46-36 The Pistons had a good season, only missing the Playoffs by two games. They feature superstar C Patrick Ewing. The Pistons have a good mix of players, but still lack another star to feature with Ewing. Malone has been on the downside and Dumars didn't have a good TC. The Pistons need to make a big move if they expect to compete in the tough East. Key Additions: SG Kendall Gill Key Improvements: Kendall Gill SG 22 6'5'' 195 B- C+ C+ B+ C A Joe Dumars PG 27 6'3'' 195 C+ B B- B D+ B Avery Johnson PG 25 5'10'' 175 C C A- B+ D+ B Indiana Pacers Last season's record: 25-57 The Pacers tied the Mavs with the worst record in the league, but ended up with the #2 pick and PF Derrick Coleman. With that and a solid TC, the Pacers are an instant Playoff team. Pippen worked really hard in the offseason, along with Chapman. Getting PG Mark Jackson was a good move because they get a true PG, something the Pacers really needed. Watch out for the Pacers. Key Additions: PF Derrick Coleman PG Mark Jackson Key Improvements: Kevin Willis C 28 7'0'' 240 B C- D+ B+ B+ C Scottie Pippen SF 25 6'7'' 225 B B- B A C+ A Milwaukee Bucks Last season's record: 33-49 The Bucks didn't have that good of a season as they thought they were going to have. Therefore, it was a really long season for them. Not being able to draft another young player to their core, they had to hope for a good TC and some good deals. Well, they got the good TC, now they need some deals. They are really weak in their frontcourt. If they can add some really good bigs, this team could have a complete 360 degree turn for the better. Key Additions: None Key Improvements: Tim Hardaway PG 24 6'0'' 195 C+ B- A A C- B Ron Harper SG 26 6'6'' 205 A- B C+ A C C Terry Catledge SF 27 6'8'' 230 B+ C- C- C+ B C Randy Breuer C 30 7'3'' 263 C+ C- C- A B- C Toronto Raptors Last season's record: 3250 I guess we save the best for last . The Raptors are in complete building mode, building around C Vlade Divac, PG Mookie Blaylock, and newly drafted SF Toni Kukoc. Divac should be their go-to-guy. Those are pretty nice pieces to build around. The Raptors are due for yet another long season, as they look to be a mid lotto team. They could also maybe trade some picks for young PF or SG, which would be solid as well.Key Additions: SF Toni Kukoc Key Improvements: Vlade Divac C 22 7'1'' 260 B C- C A B- A Toni Kukoc SF 22 6'11'' 185 C+ B- C+ C+ C B Mookie Blaylock PG 23 6'1'' 185 C+ B B A C- B The Best Team in the Central Division: Atlanta Hawks The Hawks are still a very solid team. TC didn't really mess them up. The Cavs big man and PG situation will hurt them. Bulls need a PG and SG. The Hornets need a star player. Pistons also need another star player. Bucks are a legit big man away from being a really good team. The Pacers could be a force, only time will tell. Miller looks to lead the Hawks to the Ship

Nice article, but my team started out strong, was like 25-14 until the ASG break then lost 9 straight games. Got enough wins though in my last 3 sims. |
