1990 SSBL Midwest Division Preview With the 1990 season just around the corner, this article serves as a preview to each division. It will give an insight to every team, such as, key players, improvements, key additions, etc. The East still looks like it holds the upper hand, but the West did improve as well. It's going to be tough for the Bullets to repeat, inless they can make some trades. The division highlighted in this article is the Midwest Division. Color key for improvements: Red is always a loss in rating Green = +1 Blue = +2 Purple = +3 Dallas Mavericks Last season's record: 25-57 The Mavericks had a rough season first season, but were awarded with the #1 pick in the past draft. During the past regular season, they were able to make some good enough trades to help build for the future. Now, they almost have all the pieces in place except for another stellar big man. With a big man addition and some more seasoning, this team could be a force in the future. SG Mitch Richmond is hands down the Mavs most important player this season. Robinson could serve as a very solid addition as well to the team. Their biggest win in TC was PG Kenny Smith. Key Additions: SF Cliff Robinson PF Dino Radja PG Kenny Smith PG Gary Payton Key Improvements: Dino Radja PF 23 6'11'' 225 B C- C- B B B Mitch Richmond SG 25 6'5'' 215 B+ B+ C B C B Gary Payton PG 22 6'4'' 180 C+ C A- A C- A Kenny Smith PG 25 6'3'' 170 C+ B B B+ D C Denver Nuggets Last season's record: 40-42 The Nuggets GM was content with the Nuggets 1989 season, as he thought they were a much better team. They were able to resign Bowie to a very sweet deal, one that gives them some good cap flexibility. By retaining Bowie, the Nuggets still have a nice duo of Magic/Bowie. Magic made All-League 2nd Team, and will be looking to earn that yet again. The Nuggets haven't been able to make that big move they desperately need. Another star added to this team, watch out. Key Additions: C Duane Causwell Key Improvements: Sam Bowie C 29 7'1'' 263 B+ C C- A- B+ D Magic Johnson PG 31 6'9'' 215 B- A- A+ A C C EDIT: Getting Cummings as their new SF was a really solid move. The Nuggets have really improved with that move, and now have 3 really good scorers in Cummings, Magic, and Bowie. Houston Rockets Last season's record: 36-46 The Rockets had high hopes are their good draft, but were left in dismay after a turbulent season. Their main problem: DEFENSE. Their playing-it-too-cool GM made a great move by trading for Hornacek. Not only does he provide good enough offense, but his defense is already a big + for the Rox. If it couldn't get any sweeter for the Rox, their young stud SF Glen Rice vastly improved in TC, mainly on defense. This is another + to their defense. An already solid offensive club improving their defense will translate as a good regular season, followed by a Playoff run. Key Additions: SG Jeff Hornacek Key Improvements: Joe Barry Carroll C 32 7'0'' 235 B- C- C- A- B D Glen Rice SF 23 6'8'' 220 B- B C A- C B Minnesota Timberwolves Last season's record: 37-45 The TWolves had a decent season last season. They are led by star PG Kevin Johnson. The TWolves have an abundance of bigs, and could really use a solid SG. They recently made a move in getting SF Sean Elliott, who might still have something left in the pot tank. Those picks could also be solid in their way of getting immediate upgrades. The TWolves could again make the Playoffs, but will most likely succomb to a 1st rd exit again, if no drastic moves are done. Key Additions: SF Sean Elliott FC Jayson Williams Key Improvements: Jayson Williams C 22 6'9'' 240 C+ D+ D+ B B A Kevin Johnson PG 24 6'1'' 180 B+ C+ A+ A- D+ C San Antonio Spurs Last season's record: 48-34 The Spurs had a solid season, especially after they acquired some sort of shot blocker in Mahorn. Their GM has been sitting with the team, but has attempted to make some homerun moves, but has come up short everytime. The Spurs did have a solid TC, so maybe that will put them over the hump. The Spurs could use an upgrade at C and SG, but still have a great core of Oakley + Price + Worthy. This team is still a top team in the West, and should make a deep Playoff run, as they lost to the Lakers in 6 games in the Western Conference Semi-Finals. Key Additions: None Key Improvements: Charles Oakley PF 26 6'9'' 245 B+ C- C B A- C James Worthy SF 29 6'9'' 225 B+ C+ C+ A C C Rolando Blackman SG 31 6'6'' 206 B B- C B- C- C Mark Price PG 26 6'0'' 175 C A- A A- D+ C Utah Jazz Last season's record: 39-43 The Utah team that was adopted from the Spurs GM had a decent season, making the Playoffs only losing to the Lakers in the 1st rd in 7 games. Their star was PG Fat Lever. Lever finished his strong season with great accolades, winning All-League 1st Team and All-Defensive team. However, age looks like it's catching up with Lever as he didn't have a good TC. They should trade him and build around those additions + Seikaly. The Jazz will most likely be a bubble Playoff team. Key Additions: FC Matt Geiger Key Improvements: Most of their player either stayed the same or dipped Vancouver Grizzlies Last season's record: 42-40 The Grizzlies had a stellar season, making it to the FInals, only to loose to the Bullets in a close 7 games. The Grizz GM made a great decision to keep this team together and try another run. The Grizz didn't make any moves in the offseason, but had a really solid TC to make up for it. If healthy, the Grizz will be able to be an even better squad than last season. Another Finals appearance is definitely a possibilty. Key Additions: None Key Improvements: Danny Schayes C 31 6'11'' 268 B C D+ A- B D Jack Sikma C 34 6'11'' 250 C+ B C+ B+ B- C Larry Nance PF 31 6'10'' 235 A- C C A- B- C Johnny Dawkins PG 27 6'2'' 170 C B B+ A- D+ C The Best Team in the Midwest Division: Vancouver Grizzlies This was a bit of a tough decision. The Spurs are there as well, but could use upgrades at SG and C positions. The Rockets did improve their defense, but how far will that truly get them? The Mavs are still too young, but one great deal away from being a Playoff team, and the Nuggets are a star away from being really dangerous. This division has made some nice improvements in general. Can Nance and Co. reach the summit this year?

$800 for the three. So that'll give you $1200 for the 4 articles. |
