Jerry Sloan, shown center, coached the Jazz while former coach Frank Layden was dealing with health issues.

Utah, Monday March 29, 1990 Now that the Utah Jazz have been bounced out of the playoffs by the higher seeded Los Angeles Lakers, things in Utah are starting to change. For instance coach Frank Layden who lead the Jazz to the playoffs for the first time in 5 years has decided to call it quits due to health issue. Coach Frank Layden was battling with hip problems the whole season and even skipped a few games to see a doctor. Frank was also sat on a protect "donut" while coaching the Jazz this year. In his absence new head coach took charge and was undefeated, going 7 and 0. Do we expect the Jazz to go 82-0, simply no. But it was seen through out the year that Frank had lost some of his fire and Jerry Sloan in my honest opinion had more to do with the Jazz making the playoffs this year than Frank. In short I think this is what is best for the Utah Jazz organization. In his retirement ceremony thanked the Utah organization for everything.

"Well first and foremost I would like to thank my family for supporting me through out my career and my family in the Utah organization. My faith in god has kept me afloat through out the struggles and I am here to call it quits. As a retire, I give my blessing to my apprentice Jerry. I think he is ready to lead the Utah Jazz further than I could ever dream of. The pain that I suffer from this hip is just too much for me to bear, especially through out a full 82 games."

As for now Jerry Sloan and the Utah Jazz organization have set a conference for tomorrow. Jerry Sloan played basketball as the University of Evansville. He was the leading scorer for the Purple Aces in each of his three seasons as a starter, amassing 15.5 points per contest. He led the college twice to the NCAA Division II Tournament and was voted a second team All-American during his senior season. He was later drafted in the 3rd round by the Baltimore Bullets where he only played one year and was drafted by the Chicago Bulls in the expansion draft. Sloan enjoyed a good NBA career, playing in two All-Star Games, being named to the NBA All-Defensive First Team four times and the All-Defensive Second team twice. After retiring from the game his former head coach Frank Layden hired him to be a scout and from than he kept climbing up. Soon he was the assistant head coach and now is the new head coach of the Utah Jazz. He accumulated all of his coaching accomplishment in the span of 4 seasons.

Now with a new head coach the Utah Jazz looks to improve on their first playoff birth in 5 seasons. One thing that is troubling is the rumors swirling about the possibility of Lever being traded. Rumors from CBS say the Utah Jazz have put Lever on the trading block and the freaking Boston Celtics have come calling. We dont know what is going on but if any news breaks make sure that the tribune will give you all of the juicy details.
