1989 SSBLv3 Mid-Season Report The inaugural SSBLv3 season has been really exciting to say the least. Teams were highly anticipated before the creation draft, coming up with strategies to either contend or build for the future. Some teams have been able to achieve this goal while others have been left questioning where they went wrong. This article is to highlight the contenders and pretenders, mid-season awards, and major injuries that have hurt teams. It really looks the Ship is coming out of the East this season. Contenders and Pretenders The Contenders: Atlanta Hawks: When you look at the Hawks, you notice many things that make a great team. They have a young star and big time scorer in Miller. To go along him, they have another good scorer in Adams. To anchor their defense, they have Eaton, who's one of the best shot blockers in the league. From top to bottom, this team is pretty complete. To me, they have to be the favorites to win it all, but it won't be easy. New York Knicks: As far as the Knicks go, they have probably the best frontcourt in the league. Smits is the better scorer and uses his height well to block shots, but Tarpley serves as the perfect compliment with his rebounding and dirty work. To go with Smits and Tarpley, they have role players that have been doing their jobs perfectly thus far. However, the Knicks season rests on the small shoulders of PG Steve Kerr. Orlando Magic: When you look at the Magic, they look like a damn good team on paper. They ahve a really great offense, led by Drexler, Smith, and Thomas. However, when it comes to their defense, that's where you have to start questioning things. I really thought they were going to be a really nice defensive team, but it has been the opposite. They are currently 19th in oPPG. Therefore, their point differential is average. If the Magic can play better defense in the playoffs, well you ahve to like their chances. Vancouver Grizzlies: The Grizz have been sitting #1 in the West pretty much all season long. They have been led by F Larry Nance, who recently went down with a devastating injury. Therefore, they should drop some in the standings. He'll be back for the playoffs for sure. Outside of Nance, they don't have that #2 guy like the above teams have. Lewis could be that guy, but he's not ready yet for that kind of burden. The Pretenders: Golden State Warriors: The Warriors are lucky that they have a player like Hakeem because they would not find themselves at the #2 spot in the West. Therefore, I just don't see the Warriors getting outside of the 2nd rd. They have the assets to make a big deal, but they haven't been able to pull the trigger. Utah Jazz: The Jazz have a top 5 PG in Lever. They are also more offensively oriented. They lack that big man that can score and push people around. Seikaly could one day be that guy, but keywords here, one day. They have inquired teams about big men but haven't been able to get anyone because of other GMs ridiculous wants. Charlotte Hornets: Yes this team has been playing better as of late, but I am still not sold on this team. The way they win games is on the defensive end. They are top 5 in most defensive categories. However, if you want to beat this team, your best bet is to shoot and hit the 3 ball. They are 22nd in o3P%. They also really don't have a star on their team, and I feel you need one to get the Ship. The Dark Horse: San Antonio Spurs: The Spurs are a very intriguing team. I have to give their GM a lot of credit because they have been able to turn things around. They are led by two really good players in Price and Worthy. Their GM and I know what their problems are, rebounding and shot blocking. Until they get those missing puzzle pieces, this team is not Ship ready. Mid-Season Awards MVP: This one was by far the easiest. There was a reason this player went #1 overall in the creation draft. A player like SG Michael Jordan is a game changer on both ends of the floor. He can score with the best with his elusive moves, trademark fade-away shot, and athleticism. Then, when you need to lock down the best offensively win player, he'll take on that challenge as well and excel. He has single handedly kept the Bullets in the playoff picture. Now, the only question is, how many more will he win? Defensively Player of the Year: This was also a pretty easy choice, because Hakeem Olajuwon is another game changer that also got strong consideration for MVP. Not only can Olajuwon score, but he can rebound and block shots. He is the perfect mold of a big man any team would want. He leads the league in rebounding by a good margin at 14.5 RPG. Also, he is 2nd in the league behind Eaton in BPG at 4.1. Olajuwon should be tops in BPG when he retiresRookie of the Year: Ok, maybe I spoke too soon because this was also a very easy choice. The overall #2 guy taken in the creation draft had special written all over him. When you look at C David Robinson, you just drool at what he can do on and off the court. At age 24, he is already playing like a seasoned vet. When he's not dominating teams on the court, he is dominating poverty and giving back to the community. He recently met with a construction company to release his plans on building a school for the underprivelage kids in Miami. DRob is having a phenominal rookie seasonInjuries SF Larry Nance: The Grizzlies' F will be out 17 days with Torn Abdominal Muscle. Has begun rehabbing injury slowly. PF Charles Smith: The Magic's F will be out 5 more days after sustaining a Fractured Hip. The Magic have really missed his play. PG John Stockton: In a devestating injury, the Sonics lost Stockton for the season from a torn ACL. Stockton has stayed optimistic and has stated he will be ready at full strength for next season. |
