The winner of the first ever SSBL Player of the Month award goes to none other than Earvin "Magic" Johnson of the Denver Nuggets. The 6'9" point guard from Michigan State has wowed crowds with his "magical" style of unselfish play in the first month of the regular season.

Johnson edged out players such as Utah Jazz point guard, Lafayette Lever, and the Golden State Warriors' center, Hakeem Olajuwon, who both won the honor once. Magic Johnson was chosen, as he has been Player of the Week twice already.

The Nuggets All-Star is a front-runner for the MVP award, and should even turn it up a notch as the season progresses. That's a scary thought, because Johnson is already averaging 27 ppg, and nearly 11 assists to go along with 7 rebounds. Add 2 steals a contest to that list, and you've got yourself one of the most complete players in the league.

"We plan whole games around Magic," said a Western Conference head coach, who would rather stay anonymous. "He plays every position, and he plays them all very well. He'll come at you from every which way, and he's so strong, it's almost impossible to stop him. You just kind of have to slow him down, and hope his supporting cast doesn't burn you."

That supporting cast includes Johnson's two main targets: center, Sam Bowie, and power forward, John "Hot Rod" Williams. The two bigmen are skilled offensive players underneath the basket, giving Johnson plenty of opportunities to slash the lane, and get the bigs some easy points down low. However, there really isn't anyone who can spread the floor for the Nuggets with their outside shooting aside from Johnson, and sometimes Darrell Griffith. Teams will begin to collapse on the Nuggets' inside game, forcing Johnson to reach into his big bag of tricks to pull something else amazing out of it. But, we all know it's possible. And what's more, we all know it will happen.

There is no doubt about it -- Magic Johnson is a winner in every sense of the word. He is one of those rare players who makes his teammates better, and strikes fear into the heart's of his opponents. He is my early favorite to win the MVP. But, all that matters to Magic is bringing home the O'Brien trophy to Denver at the end of the year, and hoisting it over his shoulders for the fans. Cos that's why he does it; for the fans.

He's a magic man.
