![]() Milwaukee Bucks enjoyed a wildly successful run in the 80s after moving back to the eastern conference. With very good players such as Sidney Moncrief, Bob Lanier, Marques Johnson, Ricky Pierce and Terry Cummings suiting up at different times, the Bucks have made it to the eastern conference finals numerous times only to fall to stronger Celtic and 76er squads. It was hard on Milwaukee; if only their run not coincided with some of the best teams ever to lace them up. Now, as the 80s start to give way to the 90s, a new draft will bring new promise and give them to win their first championship since 1971 when a certain prodigy was still known as Lew Alcindor. Milwaukee's first move of the creation draft was to make sure they could get another first rounder. After making numerous inquiries, the team negotiated with the Phoenix Suns for the #18 in the draft which involved Milwaukee's own second round pick and the rights to their first rounders for the next two seasons. It was clear that a point guard was to be taken and their #1 target was Illinois native Tim Hardaway. The rookie guard has fantastic one-on-one skills including a nasty crossover dribble fondly callled the "UTEP Two-step". With a ferocious handle and some slick passing, Tim Hardaway can create plays that few others in the league can. ![]() 17-18 points and 8-9 assists nights will be a breeze for him one day, if not today. If Tim Hardaway is to run, he has to have a great running mate. It comes to no surprise that Milwaukee's own first rounder was used on one of the best guards in the league, a player that has drawn comparisons to Julius Erving. A true successor to Sidney Moncrief, Ron Harper is a tough nosed 6'6 defender with a nose for the ball, some clear passing talent and a knack for getting to the hole. Just look at his numbers in his young career. 2 steals and 1 block don't come very often especially from a guard. Never mind his 20 points or his 5 rebounds or his 5 assists. ![]() Milwaukee's backcourt is the best in the league. It was in the third round that Milwaukee's luck would run out. In their first two selections, Milwaukee got the guy at the top of their lists but now, the entire organization had to stomach the two players they wanted go right before them. With the #26 pick, the Bucks had set their sights on both Andrew Lang and Pervis Ellison. They were snatched up at the #24 and #25 spots. Bucks had to make a change in plan and decided to take the best player available. Gary Grant is remarkably similar to Rod Strickland but went more than 50 spots lower. On his defense alone, he is among the very best in the league. Combine that with his passing game and you got yourself a great starting point guard. It'll be the development of an outside shot that will eventually decide whether he'll make the jump into allstar consideration. ![]() So close but so far... Lang will be bringing his good looks to another city Clearly looking to go away from guards after the first three rounds, the Bucks goal was know to draft a bigman to complete the team's new look. Gregory "Cadillac" Anderson was the most balanced bigman on the board with a nice inside game, hearty defense and tough rebounding. Coming in as the only big on the roster, Cadillac will be expected to do a lot of heavy lifting and statistical highs in nearly every category are almost ensured. "I will answer the call", says the new Buck employee, "The faith this team has shown in drafting me will not go unrewarded." ![]() Finally a 4! The Bucks will need some size on the inside. Terry Catledge, another candidate for the Bucks fourth round pick, was their first choice at the 5th round. His weak individual defense can be compensated with a strong team one. At the #3 spot of the starting lineup, Terry can do what he does best and that is put the ball in the basket. As the secondary option on his new team and a beneficiary of Tim Hardaway, third year coach Del Harris will be looking for him to light up the scoreboard with nightly 20 point per game outings. With his strong work on the offensive glass, that shouldn't be a problem. The final pick of the first half of the draft was to get some outside shooting. Scott Brooks is a young guard of small stature but great shot. As the best shooter on the team and agreeable point guard skills, Brooks will be a serious contender for playing time. So take a look at your new Milwaukee Bucks. Boasting an average age of 24.5, the Bucks will be in the Eastern Conference playoff picture for a long while now. Though their names won't be on many's contenders list as of right now, give it some time and I'm sure you'll be singing a different tune. Milwaukee, the greatest city in the world. Just look at how Oprah turned out. |
