The small green lights on the cloak flashed causing the light they dimly cast to flicker.
23:59:57
Flicker.
23:59:58
The cloak sat a desk propping up a large stack of papers. The room the cloak illuminated was chaos; papers were scattered everywhere showing numbers and information about a wide variety of topics. But amid all the chaos the bed looked untouched as if freshly made minutes ago. And at the edge of the dim light almost fading into the darkness a figure sat with their head in their hands.
Flicker
23:59:59
Flicker
00:00:00
With a heavy sigh the figure moved. Standing the figure’s face was still obscured by the darkness but the dim light showed a man in uniform with various medals above his heart. Suddenly bright harsh light filled the room as a wall monitor flashed to life. “Commander, you requested to be informed at this time of how things were proceeding.” The girl on the screen said a little bit too cheerfully for the time. “Indeed inform Captain Andrew, that I will meet him in the briefing room.” Zode answered squinting slightly as his eyes adjusted to the harsh light. “Yes sir.” She said curtly before the light faded as suddenly as it appeared. With another sigh Zode adjusted his uniform before leaving his room.

[Few minutes later]

Entering the briefing room Zode glanced around to make sure everyone was there that needed to be. “Sir, final count is 42 Ark class ships and 252 GuAIZ mobile suits. Groups Alpha and Gamma are in position; Beta group will be in position within an hour or so. ” Andrew addressed Zode as he entered. Nodding, Zode looked at the small holographic display that showed terrain, known force locations and strength that was floating above the table.

A small group of flags indicating ships was to the north but the largest group of ships was to the south with 3 different flags to represent the Argama alongside the HDF and SMS. But the main focus of the map was a surprisingly small area in between the two forces. The size emphasized the lack of information the LFA had on Inspectors. All of Zode’s scouts had either not returned or had provided minor information nothing truly substantial, he still had almost no idea what he was going up against in terms of manpower and machines. That had been the major factor in his strategy for the attack. Divided into three groups consisting of 14 ships each with 84 mobile suits, his plan was to attack form two sides keeping the last group in reserve for anything weird that might happen.

“Alright, folks,” Zode begun straightening form the display, “the time for planning is done it is now officially May 1st. Send this message to all ships, ‘Final preparations complete, Operation May Day will begin at 0800, get any rest you can because in a few hours we take the fight to them.’”

Few can find the easiness to sleep before a big day, and Howard was one of those kind of people. Of course, he would have to rest soon or later or risk being fatigued but at the moment, he was still up, milling about in the hangar of the Guantanamo-class stealth carrier Melbourne they were assigned on, looking over the various mechas they have brought with them from Hatsunejima.

Yuki was nowhere in sight but Howard reckoned she was somewhere on the carrier and wasn’t going to retire anytime soon, at least not without him. He wondered if the others were also having trouble sleeping too considering how big a day it’s going to be tomorrow…

It was doubtful that anyone would be able to sleep tonight. Even though it was in everyone's best interest to rest before a battle that would continue on for god could only know how long, the tension was too high. Even for a certain android catgirl who seemed to be so carefree all the time, it was too tense a time to rest. Instead, both Katie and Nomake were in the hangar of the Melbourne making final system checks on their respective mobile suits. The Wing Zero had been reassembled since it was left half-apart the other night and the Blue Destiny was being started for the first time since the launch from Hatsunejima. Both suits thrummed with life as their pilots went through diagnostic after cross-check after checklist to make sure that not a single servo, not a single sensor, not a single armor plate or joint was out of spec. Most pilots never paid that much attention to their suit, to be honest, but today was an exception.

Today, there would be no telling if they'd be able to survive. Their mobile suits being at peak efficiency was their best chance at making it through May Day alive.

The thought of having only eight hours before the end of their lives weighed heavily on the star-wrought lovers. Neither had said they didn't love one another anymore, but there was more than just battle tension lingering in the air. There was tension of another kind, the kind of words left unsaid just waiting to be brought to the surface. It was just a question of who would crack first.

It ended up being Katie.

"Hey... Nomake," she said simply, using the BD-1's line-of-sight communication system so she wouldn't have to yell across the hangar over the din of their mobile suits' generators.

Nomake paused for a moment, then went back to his checks. "Yeah?"

"If--"

"When," he corrected immediately, already knowing where she was headed with this.

"When... we get through this, I have to talk to you. It's important. But only after...okay?"

"Sure."

"Thanks."

Then, both went back to their duties, leaving interpersonal queries for after one of the greatest battles since the One Year War ended.

Inside the Melbourne, another pilot awaited her mission orders as the ships mechanics went about their business, doing diagnostic checks on everything that was in the machine. The pilot herself was doing some tweaking of her own, namely on the Zeta Plus' OS.

Such things were easy for a Coordinator like Sumomo, after all.

What wasn't easy though, was the thought that at this point, she might be facing Sasami as an enemy.

... Well, maybe it wasn't THAT hard. They didn't really have any attachments to each other other than as comrades in the ACN, and even that was strained by their first meeting testing out the Flags. Still, it was easier when she didn't know who the other enemy was. Maybe that was what made this somewhat harder.

She knew how Sasami fought. It was the same the other way around. They would have to fight each other extra hard this time.

That was the other thing. What exactly were they fighting for? This wasn't her world, after all. She just wanted to go home.
"Mama... Mama..."
She quickly opened up a locket of hers that she carried all the time, looked at it for a while, and closed it. Deciding that that was enough OS tweaking, she left the comm on so that she could receive her orders when they got through.

While she was always at odds with her older brother, Shoko still respected the hot-blooded and idiotic male. His ability to somehow remain calm when they were faced with certain death, his unending confidence that everything would be all right in the end...Shoko wished she had a fraction of the courage Kouta was able to put forth. This time they were on the offensive side of this conflict, they were taking the battle to the Inspectors...but given their previous encounters, where even Compatikaiser couldn't take down one of the commanding units effectively, Shoko was doubtful in her abilities.

But because the idiot was injured, she needed to pick up the slack in his place. She wasn't allowed to run away, she had come too far and is not allowed to run away. She had chosen to carry on Emi's will, it would be dishonorable to take that all back because she was afraid. So with the weight of the world, the multiverse's, on her shoulders she would have to fight, while her stupid brother was in the hospital and ogling the nurses...she'd fight...and win.

"Burn...Now..."

And in a flash she had gone from school uniform to pink cat-themed armor.

A constant tapping lightly echoed through the hanger of the Melbourne. At the far end of the hanger sat the LFA’s newest prototype the Sagittarius. Its grey and gold color scheme seeming out of place compared to the rest of the mobile suits in the hanger. Sitting on top of the Sagittarius’s left shoulder was the source of the tapping. A young girl in a pilot suit with long black hair was tapping her foot with impatience and frustration. The tapping had already driven off most the mechanics in the immediate area. On the eve of a large battle the hanger conducted its routine in near silence making the tapping seem far more out of place and annoying.

Ashley had tried to stop after being asked but just couldn’t help herself. This was her first real battle, and first real time to test the Sagittarius in anything other than training mode. But it wasn’t just her nervousness that caused her agitation. It was her location and orders that rankled her. Here she was on the eve of the LFA’s first real military battle to secure the moon and defend their homes and she was on some mercenary ship! Mercenaries that were also given autonoums power on the battlefield and she was placed under their command!

Forcing her foot to stop for a moment she turned and stared at the Wing Zero she had been told was its name. It was piloted by an old friend of Commander Zode himself and veteran of the past war, Nomake. Even though he might have been all those things he wasn’t LFA and being placed under his command but when the orders are given to you by Zode himself along with the LFA’s newest prototype you don’t say no. Jumping down into the Sagittarius’s cockpit Ashley made the final checks, and prepared to launch with the rest of squad.

The tapping begun to ring through the hanger again.

[00:42:15]

Leaving the briefing room Zode did everything but follow him own advice. Despite hardly sleeping the last few days he wandered the LFA’s flagship making sure everything would be ready in time for the Operations start. Even making sure Renard was ready to go incase although unless something strange happened he planned to stay on the Argama’s bridge. A general commanding troops from the frontline was foolish at best.

Finally realizing he was causing more nervousness with his own troops by acting the way he was Zode retreated to his quarters. But even alone he couldn’t overcome his dread for the upcoming battle. He had been in battles before but never had he been responsible for large scale tactical plans like this. He had never put hundreds of lives to risk. With a heavy sigh Zode sat on his bed thinking about the upcoming battle.

[07:58:32]

Entering the bridge Zode was dressed in his full formal military uniform. At a wave of his hand a comm. Signal was sent out to all ships that would participate in the battle.

“Good morning. In a few moments we will begin our fight to reclaim the moon. Not form the Federation or Zeon like we have fought before but form some beings form another dimension. Why they are here, and what they are planning I don’t have an answer for you. But one thing is clear, they are hostile and they will not stop. The Federation and Zeon are too wrapped up in their own politics and goals to even see it coming. And that is why we have gone seeking help form others. That is why the Hatsunejima Defense Force and the Strategic Military Services have joined us today. Because we aren’t just fighting to reclaim the moon we are fighting to stop the Inspectors , and to show them we will not go quietly into the night and we will not vanish without a fight!”

[08:00:00]

“All ships commence Operation May Day!”

Across the 26 ships that made up Alpha group and Beta group GuAIZ begun launching as the ship begun to move forward and bombard the base. At the same time the squads form the Melbourne should have been launching and helping where ever they thought help was needed the most.

On the bridge of the Argama sitting in the middle of Gamma group Zode watched as the battle for the moon base begun.

[Sound Cue: Joint Assault]

The order was finally given to all ships to launch, the Melbourne including. Right away, the first wave of six VF-25s from the Emerald Squadron launches after waiting on the launch catapults. The elevator then recedes back into the hull and moments later, another four VF-25s appeared, this time the multi-colored painted VFs of Skull Squadron.

“Alright, now we’re starting the show. Remember, this is a joint assault, we’re relying on our allies for this one and vice versa, so don’t be afraid to request for backup if the need arises.” Howard Ming said over the team’s tacnet while keying in the last few commands into his console while Yuki in the back did likewise with hers.

“Copy that, Skull Leader.” Came the simultaneous reply.

“Right. Melbourne, this Howard Ming, SMS, S25, Skull Squadron, launching!”

And with that, the four VFs launches forward and over the lunar surface and eventually form up into a formation, while the launch elevators lowers again to get the remaining units still inside waiting to be launched, namely those from the Hatsunejima Defense Force…

SMS NPC Unit Count

6x VF-25s (Skull Squadron)
6x VF-25Fs (Emerald Squadron)
1x VB-6 Koenig Monster
1x Guantanamo-class Stealth Carrier (Melbourne)
2x Northampton-class Stealth Frigate (Champagne and Marseilles)

[05:30:00]

Katie had finally managed to fall asleep, abusing her android body's adaptability to rest comfortably in the cramped cockpit of the BD-1 upon finishing her checks. Nomake had to admit, he was envious of her for being able to rest under such stress. Though the Wing Zero checked out in every possible way, he couldn't bring himself to sleep. His whole body tingled and his eyes refused to close. He knew from experience that in roughly six hours he'd be feeling the sleep he wasn't getting something fierce, but even so there was nothing he could do. This was the way he'd always been before a huge operation. Like a little kid on the night of Christmas Eve, as perverse a comparison as it might be.

So he was the only one between them to notice their new wingmate show up more than fashionably late to the hangar. With a quick adjustment to the Wing Zero's optical sensor array he zoomed in on the hangar floor, getting his first good look at Ashley Valentine. Of course, while this was his first time seeing her whole person, he already knew her vital statistics. Zode Bostitch had made plenty sure of that.

Previous day
As Nomake went to leave the briefing room after having been made to stand in front of everyone for the whole thing, Zode pulled him aside and asked him to wait. Once everyone else had cleared out he locked the door once more and grinned. "I'm assigning one more pilot to your team, Nomake. Something of a rookie."

Nomake gave something of a quizzical look to his old comrade. "And you're assigning a rookie to my squadron...why?" The single most important combat operation the Lunar Freedom Alliance had been in, and they were deciding to stick some newbie into an otherwise ace-league assault squad? He couldn't help but question Zode's reasoning for making that sort of move.

Grin unfazed Zode turned to the briefing screen and punched up a schematic of a new Gundam-type mobile suit. "MAS-01, Codename Sagittarius. Just finished shakedown tests and was cleared for combat readiness last week. She's brand new and she's all yours."

Nomake stared up at the schematic, mulling it over. The design was fairly rugged-looking, with verniers scattered everywhere as per the LFA tradition. From his scant guess they took a standard MS core block, then completely redesigned the residuals. The shoulders looked heavy-duty, which considering the cannon designed for its right arm made sense. The legs departed from the MS standard design entirely, being much more rounded and vernier-focused than any standard-issue MS in use. On top of that it had a seemingly overkill over-the-shoulder cannon and two large boosters putting out gobs of thrust that made the former Powered GM pilot jealous. The suit was the pinnacle of LFA philosophy, even a grunt like him could tell that by looking. The thought of having something like that on his side made him grin too. "All right, you've got me interested. So who is this guy?"

Zode's grin suddenly got wider, apparently not wide enough already. "That's just it, Nomake!" he exclaimed, patting his old friend on the shoulder. "It's a girl! A female prodigy! A genius! One of those chicks with the battle edge! 19, and she can outfly just about anybody! Isn't that awesome!?"

Nomake's grin faded completely. Putting his hand lightly on Zode's shoulder, he shook his head. "Don't take this the wrong way, Zode... but I hate you. I don't have time to explain, but when I get back from all this I'll tell you all about why this is such a bad idea. Still, you're the boss, so I'll try to keep her alive. If she's half as good as you say she is, I'm sure it'll be fine... tactically-speaking."

Taking a memory chip with his new assignment on it, Nomake left Zode behind in the briefing room. "...was it something I said?"

[05:32:17]

Judging by the way the mechanics were scattering from the Sagittarius and the noise that the recruit was making, Nomake once more felt that this was probably one big, bad idea. He likewise skipped on the thought of opening a channel and introducing himself to Ashley, instead opting for being glad that Katie was sound asleep. It was probably for the best. The thought also occurred to him, as he sat anxiously within the Zero, that his entire assigned squadron was female save for himself. A squad of five girls led by a guy. It was like some terrible sentai squad or something.

Two hours, thirty minutes... he thought, sighing and resigning himself to just watching the chronometer tick by.

[08:00:00]

Katie and Nomake were both wide awake and ready to go an hour earlier, though Katie had been the only one who was actually well-rested between them. With the mobile suits ready and just waiting for the signal they listened intently to Zode's speech, hands and feet resting on pins and needles upon sweat-moistened controls. Then, as if in moments, it was the top of the hour. 8 AM.

"All ships commence Operation May Day!"

"All right, guys--!" Nomake immediately announced over his squadron's personal channel, regretting the choice of pronoun as soon as it left his mouth but rolling with it, "--Katie, Sumomo, you're on my 3 and 9. Shoko, Ashley, you've got 8 and 4 high. All guns free, good hunting!"

Wing Zero stepped out of its rack and pointed towards the hangar exit, thrusters flaring before it shot out like a bolt from a railgun. The BD-1 followed immediately thereafter, hitting full throttle to catch up and stick to the Zero's right.

Okay, Nomake... just stay calm. You've got pole position. This'll be a walk in the park. Nomake's thoughts were mostly just to cool himself down.

Let's kick some ass! Come on, Inspector assholes! BRING IT! Katie's... were not.

"Sir, it seems that the Roulette faction has made it's move.."

Sumata smiled broadly as he interlaced his fingers. He narrowed his eyes darkly glaring at the screen before him. "Take everyone from red alert standbye to full combat! I want the first wave in in fifteen minutes, mobile suits deployed unilatterally. I want an entire blanket of units FLATTENIGN EVERY CRATER OF THE MOON AT THAT TIME!" He roared loudly. "Roulette faction will soften them up, we'll come in and sweep the rest through, avoid hitting the Roulette faction or otherwise antagonizing them.. for now the LFA gets the same treatment. Our enemies are the ones inhabiting our moon base!"

"Sir, yes sir!"

Christian leaned back in his seat playing with the controls of the Wildwurger. He sat anxiously as he readied himself for combat... It was getting close to time.. soon he'd have his chance... "Breakthrough commencing, fire overboost engines!" C.O. Matthews said as he set the crouse for their attack.

"Firing!" Munroe said loudly... The inspectors would soon find an alert of an enemy dangerously near them.... specifically.. coming form underground nearby! The ship burst through the surface of the moon appearing just outside the headquarters of the insepctors there. "WITHIN ENEMY FIRING RANGE, ACTIVATING EN BARRIER! ALL UNITS... SORTIE!"

"Sortie... RIGHT!" Drake said as he clutched the controls. "CHYAAAAANGEEE.. ARRRRRR WINGU!" He roared fiirng out the hanger in wing mode, screaming towards the enemies' base. "This is Drake Asgard, VERIFYING SUCCESSFUL LAUNCH! Approaching base and eliminating targets!

"This is Unidentified Pilot taking launch catapult one! let's go! CHANGE, FM~!" He roared as the unit blasted out of the hanger flying in beside Drake Asgard.

"This is Mason Willicott on standbye!"

"James, standing by!"

To which everyone replied as one. "UNDERSTOOD!"

"Team ATX is on standbye.. And the ramrod is also ready to go."

"Good.." Sumata said calmly. "Have them engage the enemy as soon as the first fleet is fully engaged.." He opened up his console as he set his sights on the large valley of the moon that this all took place on. "A half hour.." He smirked looking away. "One half hour until everything is set.."

"S-sortie?! Hang on I wasn't ready yet! I just have to finish up a few things first and--" The frantic voice of the Pilot Princess warbled over the channel. Unsurprisingly, the scope of this battle had put her a little on edge and fighting in space had always made her nervous. However what was really making screwing with her usual routine was the uncomfortably close presence of the Reliance. It had been years since Dominique had seen hide or hair of her older brother and something about him had always frightened her. They hadn't spent very much time together due to his postings while she was still in Egypt, but what she didn't know first-hand her father was fond of remind her of. He was definitely an intimidating person and now she was going to be flying beside him!

"Hey Princess!" A voice called back. Dominique started and opened looked at the comm. She certainly recognized the voice, but really didn't feel like dealing with her right now. "You'd better get your butt out there, if I'm going to out-pilot you I want it to be on equal grounds! This is how men show their strength on the battlefield so I'd better see you out there by the time I start shooting, ya got that?" Chigusa smiled behind her monitor before launching. There was no way that girl was going to show her up this time. Dominique steadied herself and smiled. She could be okay, even if Mercer was there. She still had all her friends to support her!

"I wouldn't expect the manliest pilot I know to do it any other way~ Unicorn, sortie!" The sterling white Gundam shot out like a bullet, exploding like a white star out into the blackness of space.

~~~~
In the darkness of his cockpit, the middle child of the Rosenblade crew sat with his arms crossed. All this waiting frankly annoyed him especially when she was already out there. Children didn't belong on the battlefield and he was confident she'd figure that out soon enough. If she died...well, his father deserved as much for sending little girls to war. "Rosenblade, checking in. I'm on standby, the Banshee is prepped for launch."
"All ships commence Operation May Day!"
As soon as the order was given, Sumomo's eyes snapped open. The Zeta Plus' systems were in Standby Mode for the better part of half an hour to warm up the engines and the weapons for the upcoming sortie, and all she would need to do was launch.
"All right, guys--!" Nomake immediately announced over his squadron's personal channel, seeming to pause for a short split second for some reason as he did so, but she paid it no mind. "--Katie, Sumomo, you're on my 3 and 9. Shoko, Ashley, you've got 8 and 4 high. All guns free, good hunting!"
"Roger, Squad Leader--" Sumomo said, before realizing that their squad didn't really have an actual designated name. It kind of felt awkward for some reason. She decided not to ask if they even had a name at the risk of sounding completely stupid, and taxied on the launch catapult right behind the Blue Destiny.
"Sumomo Narumiya, Zeta Plus Hummingbird, launching!"
With a roar of the BST attachment engines, she blasted off towards the vast void of space, and towards the moon.
With all the preparations, she completely missed that this was her first time actually going to the moon. Back in her home dimension, she never really had a reason to, so the closest she'd really been to space was on the top of the Space Elevator.
"... Whoa. The moon looks pretty as you approach it... it's hard to believe it's just a rocky wasteland," she gasped as she took her place on Nomake's left.
The squad took off, towards the Inspector base, unaware that they weren't the only ones trying to raid it!...
The large G-Thundergate moved into formation as well, looking a tad out of place with its size. Within the cockpit Shoko was largely silent...this was it. Her first fight in this world without her idiotic brother watching her back. She had gotten...too used to being looked at for, the fact that he wasn't present was a little unsettling but...she couldn't turn back. She needed to call forth just a bit of that courage...
---
"I think it's kind of cute they want their base back so badly...even if it is a little too late." the young boy who led the Inspectors mused, merely observing the battle via video on the gigantic mothership they used to travel dimensions, the ship that was hidden in the far reaches of space. There was no need for it to be there when the moon based had finished serving its purpose, there were much grander things to be prepared...
---
The numerous forces being sent to reclaim the stolen base would be daunting to any army, but the one commanded by the Inspectors felt no fear, but when a bulk of you force consisted of nothing more than autonomous drones that could be built at a near endless supply, it didn't matter what it was sent up against. As such when the initial attack began it did nothing more than stir up a hornet's nest...bases defense weaponry went up and began opening fire while the mobile forces that had been assembled there began pouring out...
As expected Federation mobile weapons would be the frontlines. A mixed number of mobile suits of Federation design began filing out, in numbers greater than what was originally stationed at this base. Backing them up were numerous other machines, more of the Inspectors army built from technology of world's conquered. It was a wonder how they were able to amass forces this large and build them this quickly, but that should be the least of our valiant heroes concerns...
Because in addition to the large army were three familiar machines standing behind them all. Three of the Inspectors were also here to prevent(?) the forces of this world from succeeding. Mekibos in the Graterkin, Aguija in the Silverwind and Sikalog in the Drukin. Even then they seemed to be fielding other mecha that were as large as they were...
“All ships commence Operation May Day!”
Cheering silently in the cockpit of the Sagittarius, Ashley listened intently to Zode’s speech. Practically bouncing in her seat the Sagittarius followed the rest of her squad to catapults. This was her first real battle and as nervous as she was. She couldn’t help but feel a rush of excitement as she launched.
Flaring the thrusters slightly the Sagittarius quickly fell into formation with the rest of the squad as Ashley readjusted her grip on the controls and watched the battle begin to unfold before her. Forcing herself to calm down slightly she awaited Nomake’s orders as the squad sped towards the fight.
Seconds into the operation and things had taken a turn. The Federation’s involvement in this was not unexpected what was, was the ship suddenly popping up in front of their lines without any sensors even detecting the slightest hint of it before. And a long battleship doesn’t put itself in-between two attacking armies without having at least some type of reinforcements nearby. Zode had no intentions of letting the Federation take the base while his men died of it but he certainly wasn’t willing to risk war. He wouldn’t be able to stop the Federation if they wanted to destroy the LFA and it would play to the Inspectors hands.
“Federation forces as deemed non hostile at the moment. Keep an eye on their movements and transmissions, but do not return fire unless given the order to. Our focus is securing that base!” Moments later orders went flying out of the Argama’s bridge as fast as the horde of mobile dolls flowing out of the base.
Groups Alpha and Beta adjusted their formation as they continued to advance. Each group formed into a ball formation that’s main focus was to protect the ships that were bombarding the base. The ship meanwhile had shifted their targets to the hangers and launch facilities of the base to try and stem the flow of mobile dolls.
The LFA was doing all it could be likely it would be up to the SMS and the HDF and their ability to take out the super robots that would decide the battle.
Deep inside the Moon Base’s space docks, one berth was abuzz with activity of all sorts, for it berths the vaunted Disva Kyedu Maligant mobile space fortress. Inside the impressive and shapely hull was no different, as crew, personnel and drones were up and about doing their assigned tasks and executing commands from the upper echelons of the ship’s officers.
At the top of the hierarchical pyramid, Captain Xin Gu Larity was at the bridge overseeing the last minute work being done while also giving a few orders here and there while his bird of prey sat still on his should eyeing everything as well. “Once all the Archivists are on board, get them into the Information Chamber immediately, they will know what to do from there. Also, somebody get me the Earthling’s forces disposition.”
Despite the attack directed at them, he was deadly calm as usual, as if the attack outside was non-existent. A holo window opened up beside him, showing the face of his daughter. “Is everything alright, father?”
“Wonderfully smooth, my dear.” Xin replied with a grin. “How is it going at your end?”
“The control system is going through the final checklist. If all goes well, I would be ready in twenty minutes.” Maya replied, a hint of pride in her voice in anticipation of what she would be tasked to do.
“Good, good. It might not come to it, but stay vigilant, my dear.” Xin said with a nod of confirmation. “These Earthlings loves surprises and when and if it’s your turn to take the stage, do your best.”
“I will, father.”
---
“Skull Squadron, evasive maneuvers.” Howard ordered calmly over the squadron’s tacnet. Their approach on the captured base did not go unnoticed at all, which Howard didn’t find too surprising.
What he did find surprising was the units being sent to intercept them: GMs, Huckebeins, VFs, everything the Federation base could have fielded before its capture was being thrown at them by the droves in addition to unfamiliar units that were probably Inspector in origin. How they were deploying so many of them was a mystery but Howard wasn’t going to dwell on it too long.
“Skull Squadron, reaction missiles, single round, fire!” In unison, the six VFs of the Skull Squadron launches a volley of six large missiles into the approaching lines of enemy mechas, and spectacularly explode and lighting the otherwise dimness of the moon with the light of six reaction explosions that would burn, melt and destroy most of the approaching mechas the Inspector were fielding.
At the rear, with the Emerald Squadon VFs providing a protection screen, the Champagne and Marseilles opened fire with their main guns and salvoes of missiles at the incoming mechas as well. The Koenig Monster meanwhile, was now in its Gerwalk configuration, sitting at the bow of the Melbourne facing the incoming horde at the ready...
Right up at the front of the Federal fleet, the Ramrod was closely cruising in formation with the rest of the ships as they slowly bear down on the base the Federation forces somehow lost to an alien force before they returned to the Earth sphere proper. Yuuto eyed his sensors which focused ahead of them and their surrounding, also showing him the task force they were assigned to which was composed of the Magellan-class battleship Moscow and four Salamis Kai cruisers.
His appreciation for the entire Federal fleet present was cut short however as his sensor now picks up a mass of targets bearing down on them. "We got targets incoming." Yuuto warned out loud.
As the rest of the crew readies themselves, the radio crackled to life. "All ships commence firing. The enemy is fielding our own units against us!" Ordered Captain Gressier.
True enough, they can now make out the telltale profiles of various familiar Federal mobile suits, and while Ryoutaro and Shoko and maybe even Hana feels indifferent about it, Yuuto sees it as a tantamount humiliation and insult to the entire Federal mobile suit corp. Gritting his teeth, he raised his gun sights and opened fire, sending twin lances of beam cannon shots and a salvo of missiles at the approaching mobile suits and followed by the other ships in the Ramrod's task force firing their own guns.
At the very least, he wants to make sure that their destruction would save them from the humiliation of being used by their enemy.
As soon as the Wing Zero picked up EFSF IFF signals, Nomake tried to open a channel to his squad to warn them but was instead cut off by a transmission from Zode himself across the entire LFA frequency. "Federation forces as deemed non hostile at the moment. Keep an eye on their movements and transmissions, but do not return fire unless given the order to. Our focus is securing that base!" came their current commander's order, one that Nomake had already keyed into his firing computer. Having not seen Zode in quite a while, he wasn't sure if the guy's combat tactics had lapsed. This proved they hadn't.
So rather than repeat what Zode said, Nomake merely acknowledged it to his squadron. "You heard the man! Ignore the EFSF and focus on the Inspectors! I'm updating the squadron's IFF via my computer now to filter out mecha launched by the EFSF carriers and those launching from the occupied moon bases. This way we don't make any mistakes." The problem is their numbers, though. I hate to say it, especially since that Ashley girl is new... but I think it's best if we split up. Yeah, that's for the best. Nomake eyed his opponent selection and issued an order he hoped everyone would follow. "All right, new order. Katie, Sumomo, guns free but go after the mobile suits and those other mobile weapons if you can. Ashley, Shoko, you're with me. We're going after the big ones."
"What the hell!? You're just gonna go off on your own and leave me back here?" Katie objected.
"I'm not messing around!" Nomake yelled back, annoyed. "This is a battle, and your suit isn't equipped for taking on large-scale opponents! Just trust me, Katie, just this once!"
"...Fine! But don't blame me if you get your ass shot off!" Katie responded, the BD-1 breaking out of formation and blasting towards where the first wave of moon-launched EFSF mobile suits were. Her beam rifle lanced out across space with frightening accuracy, nailing Strike Daggers, GMs and Guncannon IIs the instant they were within her beam's range. Though they were all familiar mobile suits which used to be on her side, for a little while Katie forgot that this was an interdimensional war and felt as if it were the One Year War all over again. Mobile suit after mobile suit flew into her target locks, occasionally forcing her to dodge one way or another before returning fire. "There's no end to them... but bring it on! I'm not a mobile suit anymore, I can take you down all by myself!"
Nomake didn't feel completely confident in his girlfriend's ability to stay alive. Sure, before her accidental death during the EXAM trials she was an ace pilot, a Newtype... but they hadn't ever fought side-by-side as two separate pilots. So, without real knowledge of her skills, Nomake opened a channel directly with the Zeta Plus over line-of-sight. "Sumomo. Keep Katie alive for me. Nomake out."
Switching back to the squadron channel, Nomake switched the Wing Zero to reverse thrust and stopped mid-flight, raising its twin buster rifle in both hands. "Ashley, Shoko, fire support! Let's take down those three big guys all at once! I've got the middle, and watch those EFSF suits!" He waited, as he said, for his firing arc to be clear of the mecha launched by the Reliance and her escorts. As soon as the only thing between himself and the Silverwind were enemy grunts, he pulled the trigger and sent a full-power blast into it!
"Tch! A third party is around too!?" Sumomo gasped as her Zeta Plus picked up the EFSF IFF signals. Well, any problems they would get from them would be allayed partially by Zode's order to ignore them for the moment and focus on securing the base.
"All right, new order. Katie, Sumomo, guns free but go after the mobile suits and those other mobile weapons if you can. Ashley, Shoko, you're with me. We're going after the big ones," Nomake said.
"Roger!" Sumomo said as she broke formation... for a brief moment, anyway. She stopped when she heard the argument between Katie and Nomake on the radio, and the catgirl finally acquiesced to Nomake's demands and broke off too. Sumomo sighed - this really wasn't the time for this.
"Sumomo. Keep Katie alive for me," Nomake suddenly asked via LOS communication. The tone in his voice did indeed show how worried he was for her though, at the very least.
"Yes sir," Sumomo said as she went ahead of Katie, providing cover fire and cutting a path with her Smart Beam Rifle whenever she could. It helped that her unit was faster thanks to the Booster modules, and she didn't really have to aim thanks to the Smart gun.
It was at that point that she noticed just how... numerous the enemy was. Where were they coming from?
"Katie, we can't possibly stem the MS tide so quickly," she said as she kept firing away with her rifle. "Do you think we should try to infiltrate the base and find out where they're coming from? If we can cut the tide at its source!..."
「吼えろ!コンパチカイザー!」
The reaction missiles being used as an opening move caught the drone force off guard, a number of Battas and charging mobile suits seemed to fall victim to the large blast radius, but while a significant number of the defending force was taken out, the swarm didn't falter anyway, with what remained flying through the remnants of the reaction explosion and any debris of their fallen comrades. Mindless drones with no attachment to another, with their only goal being to destroy.
Their forces were quite literal cockroaches (only some of them were grasshoppers but...), in that they were easy to kill...but keeping them down permanently? That was the tricky part. The Battas were intent on charging through the lines, using their smaller bodies that were protected against energy weapons: their distortion fields allowed for the MS beam fire to be deflected harmlessly while they attempted to latch onto the various flagship hulls and begin chewing away to get inside...
Further, even with the base entrances being bombarded like this, it didn't seem to slow down the number of them filing out by much. It was as if the base was just a decoration for something within...there was something that made it less of a base and more of a nest...
While the Silverwind could have easily dodged the incoming shot with it's superior speed, Aguija merely gestured for the three large machines guarding her to move in front...and then much like the Battas put their Distortion Fields up...seemingly combining them into a formidable wall and blocking off the Buster Rifle shot. The Inspectors guessed right in dragging this particular universe's mechanoid blueprints.
Of course, Sikalog and Mekiboss didn't seem to do anything in retaliation to all this. Their mission was clear but for some reason it looked like the Inspectors were, for once, on the defensive. The drones did as they pleased as a distraction but the Gekigan types plus their own mechanoids remained in their neutral stances. Well, except for the Silverwind anyway...
Who largely ignored the Wing Zero, breaking formation in order to attack the G-Thundergate! Crossing the distance with its bladed arms readied, before Shoko could even react, the Thundergate now had a large gash along its body, barely protected by the giant jets own energy field.
Why they weren't actually properly fighting back was anybody's guess but...it seemed the Silverwind's current goal was clear.
"Everything else here is small fry, but we'll at least make do with the Overgate Engine!"
High Commander of the LFA {Newtype}
The battlefield was not what she was expecting.
Destruction, confusion chaos.
Everywhere Ashley looked there were people fighting for their lives against the swarm of enemies flooding out of the base. She suddenly wished the Sagittarius's sensors weren't as good as they were so she could try and ignore some of it. "What am I doing here!?" she whispered to herself.
"Ashley, Shoko, you're with me. We're going after the big ones." came Nomake's voice through the comm.
"Roger, adjusting formation." She answered nervously as millions of thoughts begun to run through her head. Keep an eye out for enemies, look for weak points, follow orders, all flittered around her head as they neared their targets.
It wasn't until the Sliverwind had scored a gash along the G-Thundergate's side that Ashley stopped thinking and let her instincts take over. Bringing the "Pilum" cannon up Ashley fired a shot off at the Silverwind's shoulder trying to disable its primary weapons.
The LFA forces were simply not expecting the numbers that were being thrown at them. Coupled with the fact that the Battas ability to deflect the LFA's primary weapons, the LFA forces were already close to breaking. While the veterans and command had expected a tough fight, the inexperienced youths that made up the majority of the force they were in panic mode.
"Order the mobile suit teams to switch to secondary weapons and engage in close range combat. Taking out the enemies burrowing into the ship take priority, and tell them to use their extension anchors to grab hold of them and pull them out if necessary. " Zode ordered form within the Argama.
"Any order for gamma group sir?" one of the bridge officers asked.
"Move gamma group up to reinforce beta. When we get within range switch bombardment form the base's hangers to defenses ."
"How many of them are there?" Zode wondered quietly to himself as the Argama joined the battle.
“They just keep coming!” Shouted Skull 4 over the group’s tacnet.
“Keep it up, don’t let them get close to the ships!” Howard shouted back. An incoming high speed Batta was zipping towards him at ramming speed causes him to jerk at his control stick back to transform his Armored Messiah into its Gerwalk mode, arresting his forward momentum to open fire a combination salvo of beam gatling gun fire and homing missiles.
Once he was clear, he transforms back into fighter mode and flies forward further into the fray, gunning down as much hostile units being sent at them as much as possible.
Yukihotaru has her eyes on the sensors most of the time, and a spot of activity to their left caught her attention, causing her to look to confirm it visually with her eyes. “Howard, the others seems to be attacking a high speed unit to our left, and it looks like one of our own is hit.” She reported calmly.
“Sounds like our call.” Howard replied, giving the fight a brief glance. “Skull Squadron, split up and take out the enemies individually. Stay alive and good hunting.”
With that order, the rest of the Skull Squadron breaks formation to continue their highspeed assault. Howard meanwhile, turns his Armored Messiah towards the engagement with the Silverwind as fast as he could. “This is Skull-1, we’re here to help.” Howard announced his arrival to help, followed by a twin lance of energy from the swiveling laser cannon mount on his Armored pack aimed at the Silverwind!
With the way the plethora of mobile suits were amassed as they approach them, hits were easily scored on and Yuuto eased himself a little as he eyed the battlefield through his targeting sensors. Somewhat to his dismay, the surviving hostile units continue forward while closing the gap left in their ranks from the EF’s first round of attacks.
Around them, the many ships opened fire again and again while their mobile suit forces flies forward to engage the hostiles in close combat. For their part, the Ramrod could only likewise fire its guns again.
Yuuto in particular, spotted an odd formation of units forming a line behind the countless hostiles being sent their way. With the way they are now, the EF forces was slowly inching forward the base but if they were still engaging them by the time they reached it, who knows what trap they might fall into. And there’s also the LFA fleet and their unknown intentions in this battle as well.
“Ryugami, get us moving forward pass the enemy line.” Yuuto finally decided.
“Eh what? There’s a wall of bad guys in front of us, I don’t think we can make it.” Ryoutaro replied in utter surprise.
“Just do it, I trust your flying. I’ll get in line with the captain and see how much cover fire we can get. We need to break the line now or we’ll be bogged down here for the rest of the fight.”
After much deliberation and argument back and forth, the Ramrod reluctantly left the EF’s line and charges forward, as its guns opened fire in tandem with its escort Salamis Kais and mobile suits to clear them a path forward and possibly hammer the enemy line so as to give the rest of the fleet a breather and opening to strike at…
"Katie, we can't possibly stem the MS tide so quickly. Do you think we should try to infiltrate the base and find out where they're coming from? If we can cut the tide at its source!..." came a transmission from her new teammate, the short girl in that Zeta Plus. Katie grinned, taking a few more potshots at random before lining up on Sumomo's flank and taking care of units from behind her.
"Heh, you're pretty daring for a little girl. Charging in there with just the two of us isn't going to be a walk in the park," she replied, still shooting down EFSF grunts as she went along. Occasionally a Batta would get in her way and she'd shoot it instead, and occasionally it annoyed her by raising some sort of invisible force field that bent her beam rifle shots harmlessly away. "But it beats sitting here! I like your style, Sumomo! Your suit's faster, so I'll grab on and you let 'er rip!" Doing just as told Katie turned the Blue Destiny 180 degrees, clamping down the mobile suit's left manipulator onto the Zeta Plus's stabilizer fin. She kept her right hand free with the beam rifle, tracking suits that tried to shoot them down along the way!
"What... what the hell!?" Nomake said out loud in spite of himself as he watched the twin buster rifle's shot dissipated into hundreds of harmless streaks of light. A full-power blast and it did absolutely nothing. A barrier, and a strong one. Shit. Means I either have to get in close or find a way around it. The Zero System was already crunching the simulation data based on what limited information it had on the Silverwind and the Battas, suggesting a possible course of action. It came up with an experiment to see if he could possibly flank the Silverwind and get it from behind. Nomake immediately flipped his mobile suit back around and took off in its direction. "Shoko, I'm co--"
Suddenly the Wing Zero made a full-thrust stop mid-flight and its head moved to look at the incoming swarm of SMS mecha. There are three large-scale enemies. It would be tactically disadvantageous to waste all our forces on just one. If SMS is going to handle that one, then... Leaving Howard and his crew to help Shoko with the Silverwind, Nomake instead turned about and headed towards the Drukin. He knew that unit not by name but by its past actions. He had fought it before, back in the Blue Destiny, before Katie's soul had been transferred into her current body. They'd fought it together and actually managed to hold their own against something so ridiculously massive. Now he didn't have her backing him up, but he did have Zero. Statistically, his current suit was significantly more powerful than the Blue Destiny. If they were able to take chunks out of the Drukin before, it was time to really blow that hideous thing out of space. "Ashley, change of plans. I'm sending you targeting data for the other large-scale unit. I've got the remaining one. Try to hold off any serious fire, test the water on approach. See if you can get behind him then fire at will!" The data he sent was information on the Graterkin. It was a little annoying not knowing what those mecha were called. "Nomake to my team! The enemy attacking the G-Thundergate is now designated 'Zovorg 1'. The one I'm attacking is 'Zovorg 2' and the one I want Ashley after is 'Zovorg 3'."
Well, that's that. Now I just have to hold up my end. Reaching up Nomake pushed on the transformation lever, converting the Wing Zero into Neo Bird Mode. In that much speedier, sleeker, harder-to-hit form he rocketed full-throttle towards the Drukin, juking and rolling the whole way. Once he'd passed by the transformation lever was yanked back and the rudder kicked, spinning him back around into mobile suit mode facing the Drukin's rear. "If I remember right, those bit shoulder joints are your weak spot!" Rather than fire one massive blast Nomake split the twin buster rifle apart, each side firing into one of the Drukin's shoulder joints. At least those EFSF guys are stayin' out of it!
As if the battlefield expanding across the distance from the Earth to the Moon wasn't already insane enough, there was a gravimetric distortion that would read on any sensors tuned for such phenomenon (likely only the SMS cruisers) and a brief flash of light just beyond the edge of that battlefield. In a spot almost exactly between the planet and her satellite appeared... something. Something that definitely wasn't there before and which definitely didn't belong there. A craft that, if someone were close enough to get a precise scan of it, wouldn't match anything in the Earth Federation database. The closest thing to its general shape was a ship lost hundreds of years ago, one which even now was still on Earth, in a museum. That ship... was not this ship. This ship was...
Posted Image
"Yamato, warp... complete," said the ship's helmsman, Minato Takanashi, with a pause of confusion. While the physics of warp travel weren't something he bothered himself with, it didn't take an astrophysics genius to see that they had relatively gone nowhere. The moon was still right there, filling the Yamato's bridge viewports. The ship's chronometer had ticked forward as expected, and there was a sensor and visual blackout as had been predicted. All the instruments as well as the crew's own memories supported the ship going to warp. Yet here they were, having gone... nowhere.
"Confirm our position," Captain Sedrick Faraday spoke evenly from the captain's chair, not wanting to completely jump his own gun. A gun which rested calmly in his right hand, safety off, ready to strike down the imbecile responsible for warping them absolutely nowhere. Most likely the recipient of that laser bolt would be Yukina Moeko, the science officer who suggested the Earth-Moon warp point. Then again, maybe his eyes were deceiving him. Perhaps they had warped but it was such a distance that they couldn't make it out.
He could already tell that that was not the case by the way Yukina quivered in her chair after checking the instruments. "According to... constellation cross-referencing... D-Distance travelled is... zero space kilometers, sir--" she began, then let out a yelp of fear and foolishly curled into the fetal position when she heard the captain rise from his chair and take aim with the laser pistol.
"Sir!" spoke up Thomas Franklin from the gunnery position, pointing out the viewport. He wasn't just speaking up aimlessly to prevent the death of a fellow officer, however. "Look! Flashes in the distance. That looks like a battle out there."
Sedrick kept his pistol trained on Yukina but did look out the viewports to confirm that he wouldn't have to gun down his annoying American gunner as well. "Well I'll be damned, Mr. Franklin. Good eyes." Holstering the pistol he sat back down and took a breath, once more switching back to a calm persona as if nothing had even happened to perturb him. "Well, Ms. Moeko? What are you waiting for? And the rest of you, status reports! Don't just sit there!"
"All decks reportink in. No injuries, no system errors," spoke up Soma Pavlichenko, the operations officer with an almost comedic eastern European accent. Well, it would be comedic if his role weren't so dependent upon oral commands, anyway.
"No damage internal or external," continued Saburo Katoki, the damage control officer. He and Soma were a team, and together they were pretty sure they'd be able to run the ship single-handedly. The only problem being, of course, the lunatic in the captain's chair and more specifically the gun he carried everywhere.
Yukina slowly unfurled herself as the realization that she wasn't dead sank in and she slowly returned to her duties. She was no less frightened by the captain, but now she had a duty to perform. Steeling herself against his hair-trigger rage would have to be a therapy session for later. "O-Of course. Scanning now." She switched the ship's radar and sonar systems to maximum output since the battle was out of visual range. It was risky since now they'd be a massive spot on anyone else's sensors, but there wasn't a choice. "Sir, the... I'm not sure--"
"Not sure about what, Ms. Moeko?" interrupted Sedrick, tapping a finger loudly against his armrest.
"It's a mess of signals and nothing matches any known silhouette in our computer banks. It's like there are thousands of ships out there but not a single one is being recognized." Sedrick confirmed the data on his own screen. She was telling the truth--their sensors could make out thousands of rapidly-moving craft within that battle but their silhouette analyzer couldn't match a damn thing.
"Put that onto the video panel, maximum magnification," Sedrick ordered, standing once more. This time it was to have a closer view of the overhead video panel rather than to assassinate his crew, however. The video panel slowly wavered to life, the Yamato's sophisticated sensor array compositing radar, sonar and visual images into a clear picture of the battle. The bridge crew in its entirety fell silent as the images flashed across. There were ships involved, yes... but there were thousands of... robots. Not fighter craft, but distinctly humanoid robotic devices. Occasionally a fighter craft or two would briefly show up in the visual, but the majority of this battle appeared to be being waged among the humanoid objects.
Breaking the awe of the situation, Mizue Akiyama spoke up from communications. "Captain. I'm not reading any known signal frequencies, either. I've got no trace of UDF HQ or our planetary bases. There's a lot of radio interference but I think I can get some of what's going on on speakers. One moment." Now joining the images on the ship's video panel was the crackling of static interspersed with random clicks and pops as Mizue tried to clean up the signal. Finally it was clear enough to make out words.
"...fzzt... move to...fzzzzzt....beta. Att--fzzt--moon defenses..."
"What the hell is going on, here? One second we're above Earth, the next we're in a warzone?" Thomas spoke out loud. Sedrick couldn't disagree. Despite his superior genius-level intellect the nature of this phenomenon was beyond him. Or rather, the few ideas he had didn't seem to hold water. He'd thought perhaps this was a different solar system and that they'd actually warped an amazing distance, but there was no solar system this close to Earth and the star charts all matched up to Sol's alignment.
"Maybe... we jumped through time, instead?" mumbled Yukina to herself.
"What was that?" asked Sedrick, glaring down at her.
Flinching, Yukina fumbled to remember what she'd just said. "I mean, what if the warp... didn't cover distance. The ship's chronometer says we passed time, so perhaps we warped time instead of space?" It sounded so ridiculous when she said it. Even she wasn't believing herself anymore. She just wanted to sink back into her chair and disappear, forget this whole mess.
"It's... possible. Not too poor a hypothesis. Keep up the ridiculous ideas, it'll keep you alive," replied Sedrick, nodding to himself. Indeed, the warp drive is untested. This was our first space warp and we might have just made a huge mistake. It also explains why there's such a huge battle so close to Earth. The Gamilas must have advanced already and by now, their technology has advanced and ours along with it. Seems they didn't have any faith in our mission. Can't blame them. What a failure! "All right, people. Red Alert!" Sirens once more blared throughout the ship, though since they'd hardly just had a space warp the ship's crew was already in place and merely tensed up at the sudden switch to battle-readiness. "We will be operating on the principle that we've accidentally jumped to the future. I've made the following observations on the ships in that battleground and have marked some as UDF and others as Gamilas based on their structural configuration. If we've got any chance at helping our people we have to strike before the Gamilas know we're back. We don't know what frequency the UDF are using and we can't risk alerting the Gamilas so for now we make no radio transmissions." Clicking the comm switch on his chair, Sedrick radioed the engine room. "Kurosawa, status report."
"Wave motion engine at 90% of nominal," Hideki Kurosawa replied back, lovingly manipulating the instruments from his observation deck above the wave motion engine reactor core. "I'm assuming the red alert means you'll be wanting more than that."
"That's why I brought you aboard. 120%, Kurosawa. Prepare to fire the wave motion gun!"
"Aye, sir."
Clicking the comm switch to passive, Sedrick gave his final few commands. "Franklin, target the coordinates I've relayed to your console. Hit 'em with everything we've got... and try not to get too many friendlies in the process." The coordinates to be targeted were... the LFA and SMS fleet! As opposed to the standard designs of the EFSF cruisers, the LFA and SMS ships closely resembled the awkward lines and multi-faceted nature of known Gamilas cruisers. Thomas nodded and pressed a large switch on his console, flipping up a pistol-grip-like firing controller.
"Target scope, open!" he said aloud, a transparent panel rising out of the console ahead of his controller directly into his line of sight out the forward viewport. "Visual crosshair, brightness set at 20. Everybody, anti-shock, anti-flash equipment ready!" The transparent screen suddenly flashed alive with a sophisticated digital HUD crosshair, allowing him to precisely point the bow of the ship at his target point, a position that made sure to pass through a significant number of Space Ark-class ships before finally striking home on the Melbourne. Each minor adjustment with the wave motion gun controller fired thrusters, as the only way to actually aim the massive bow gun was to move the entire ship. While in preparation to fire, Thomas in effect had the helm. He and everyone else on the bridge grabbed the anti-flash goggles from the side of their seats and slid them over their eyes, lest the blast blind them temporarily.
"Energy charge at 120%," came the final call from engineering, confirming that all preparations were complete.
A new sound, a powerful thrumming began to resonate throughout the Yamato. For about ten seconds it built up then sounded as if it were at a peak though the sound refused to wind down. It instead turned into a loud whine, as if the ship itself were trying to blow itself apart. Thomas waited five more seconds as he watched the energy level on his target scope build up to critical before counting down. "Five... four... three... two... one... Wave Motion Gun, FIRE!" One final click of the trigger was all it took. The briefest of brief silences precluded a massive blast of tachyon radiation from the barrel built into the bow of the ship, a beam that raced across the gap towards its targets!
