Getting obliterated by your competition in debates? Or just want to learn the ropes? Well, I've compiled a list of things to keep in mind so you can even the playing field. 1. Back up your statements. Without being backed up by links or facts, people will generally ignore what you say or will otherwise easily provide counter-arguments. You want to find proof that what you're saying is correct before posting it. 2. Don't post opinions. This means only post facts; that is, statements that can be checked. "25% of people prefer product A" is a fact that can be checked. "Product A is better" is an opinion. 3. Don't ad hominem. Don't go characterizing the debater in an effort to win for your side. Telling someone that they're judgement is wrong because they're stupid, angry, pathetic, picky, or whatever, is irrelevant. 4. Focus on the facts given. Posts that simply say "I think that..." will generally be ignored. Instead back someone up or counter someone else. 5. Know when to quit. Sometimes, you'll be defeated, and you've got to recognize that. If you don't, you'll end up pulling random statements out of your @$$ and end up characterizing yourself as a bad sport. 6. Give. You don't have to concede defeat, but if someone else happens to say something that you agree with, give it to them. It makes you seem less aggressive and hostile. However, don't make posts simply saying "I agree"; this takes up space and contributes nothing to the discussion. If you agree with something, you can say that, but be sure to add something else with it. For example, you might begin your reply with, "I agree with that, but..." 7. Focus on the subject. Straying offtopic will likely cause annoyance to other debaters and your post likely will be ignored. 8. Don't assume. Check your facts before posting. 9. Have some fun. This isn't just one of those lame parental remarks to keep you out of trouble; if you have fun with the debate, you may actually find you do better. You'll stay focused on the subject, and not the person you're combatting. Good luck. |
