Ive used firefox since i can remember -

Its easy to switch over , any bookmarks/favorites are transered too i asume along with passwords too. IE now has tabs and nibbled a few other things from Mozilla so i suppose you wont see much difference in performance anymore ,

As its open source you would expect bugs n fixes founds to be speedily sorted - unlike MS who quietly deny the software they sell has problems and chuck out an update on the quiet some months later (i refer to some exploits they did nothing about for months after theyty were aware of them.)

You just download it and install it like you would with any other program.
It won't install over the top of IE

Here's the link:
http://www.mozilla-europe.org/en/firefox/

Also if I remember right it will ask if you have any bookmarks in IE that you wish to transfer to Firefox.

i'm a firefox user and have been for donkeys years. i find it much better than I.E. which i'm forced to use at work on most of the machines.

i also tried the new chrome one made by google but i don't think it's quite finished yet.

right , as ive reinstalled windooooows ive not yet switched back to Firefox - as there are new or updated Safari and Chrome browsers , i thought id research their security weaknesses ..

seems that Firefox and Opera top the vunerability list with Chrome at the bottom followed by IE8 ....

the reason is probably about the number of Firefox users now , in 5 years its gone from 10% of the marketshare to 50% !!!

anyway the question i have , for IE users is
1 , do your text pages smooth scroll ? i have the option ON , but the scrolling looks shit

2 , on here when i make a post , it always shows it in a preview mode before posting

I had that same issue. When I used the "quick reply" feature, it also went to the "full reply" type screen. Also the top bar thingy with Active Topics never stayed at the top. However, all of a sudden now both these things are working. Check if there's any IE updates, my version is 8.0.6001.18783.

I use Firefox at work and never had a problem with that. Although lately when I click reply, to post my reply I sometimes just get a white page and it hasn't posted. I think that's just to do with cookies as I leave a tab open for the site all day :-)

And just for my two pennies, I prefer IE to Firefox, can't see any benefit to Firefox. :grin

Thought I would re-try safari and chrome to find which is best because I feel that Firefox isn't as good as it use to be.

And for me the winner has to be Chrome. It may not have all the fancy features that Firefox has but the pages load up quicker and the pages seem to scroll better.
Also your bookmarks from Firefox transfer over to chrome.

i'm getting rather used to trusty old firefox. i've never had any problems and i like my foxmarks plug in and logmein way too much to use anything else. i tried chrome when it was in beta and didn't think much of it. i'll maybe give it a whirl when i get back if i can use my plug ins.

daz, could it be your gfx driver more than the browser that is causing your "jerky" page scrolling? i remember you had to reinstall your lappy stuff. might be worth doing driver updates too as ie8 is generally not bad.

They did talk about adding a Foxmarks (now called xmarks) plug-in to Chrome but that was 6 months ago and nothing has happened yet.

If your not sure how to add a bookmark, right click on the bookmark bar and select add page - then enter your stuff and select where to save it

im just gonna leave it vanilla and let it unfold itself ,

noticed that HMV sounds dont work tho !

Meaty, my advice is go with a browser that you like, I just like chrome at the minute because it's basic and simple. It may not have Xmarks (foxmarks) that Coco uses (and so did I) but I have started to use Google Bookmarks which maynot be as good but does the same job (I think)
Daz, the sounds at HMV play just fine for me?

lol , they work fine for me now ...... i think i might have tried it before i installed my external soundcard drivers , and never had lappy sound on ...

as for Chrome ,

i probably wouldnt have considered it had i not had to do a windows reinstall , glad i did tho , it might not be for everyone , but i like the fact you dont really notice it when browsing (if u get me) - its unclutered and simple :)

there is a minifox or something , which for Mozilla users may be a good choice , its designed for Notebooks , in so much that there is less screen space used by the toobars n crap

Not sure how many are using Google Chrome but I have started to use ChromePlus.
It has all the features of Chrome but also has added features like auto bookmark syncing (with google docs) and also:

**Double click tab to close page**

You don't need to locate and click the small "x" button on the tab to close it. In ChromePlus, you just double click within the tab area and deleted page will close.

**Super drag**

Drag a link in the page with your left button and drop it somewhere else in the page. This can create a new page(tab) to open the link; Dragging and dropping a block of text in the page will create a page and search the text with your default search engine.
Posted Image

**Mouse gesture**

The Arrow Trace mouse gesture draws an arrow trace on the page while you using the right button of your mouse. In ChromePlus, you can make efficient commands with easy mouse gestures. Practiced mouse gestures can save you quite a lot of time and are fun.

**IE tab**

Some web pages use IE controls and thus can only run in IE currently. The IE tab is designed to visit these pages. Just look for an icon/An (IE) icon appears in the right of the location bar.

A good use for this is the sps fantasy league table which doesn't work in Chrome but does when you click the IE tag.
You can also add web site links to automatically open in IE tab.

**Download Tools Support**

For your convenience, we supported some popular download tools in the context menu of web pages. The download tools supported are: NetAnts, Orbit, QQ Xuanfeng, IS, FlashGet3, FlashGetMini, NetX, WebThunder, Xunlei. If you have installed these tools, you can find the corresponding item in the context menu when you right click on a link.

i like the clarity of Chrome compared to FF and IE , i dunno what it is be pages just seem to look better ,
that said it isnt perfect and some things (like Guitar hero - not being ordered properly on chrome , and EA sports webby not working at all on chrome) - but i suppose thats what the new IE features for ;)

I like Chrome and the Chrome plus looks great, as you said it's not without bugs and it don't show the footy league B00mer posts so I have to use FF but I'm sure they'll get there in the end.
