HM Revenue & Customs has seized "hundreds" of counterfeit Nintendo DS and DS Lite consoles imported into the UK, and warned that many more could've made their way into the shops before Christmas.

The handhelds, which had been purchased from various dodgy websites in Asia says Customs, are retailing for around £40 (rather than the proper RRP of £100) and are supplied with potentially dangerous power adaptors.

Nintendo UK has confirmed that the Nintendo DS and DS Lite consoles are counterfeit and warned that the power adaptors supplied have not been electronically tested and do not meet strict UK safety standards.

"UK consumers must be vigilant when purchasing goods online," said HMRC's Head of Intellectual Property rights Pamela Rogers. "Buy from a reputable or regulated site and, if purchasing from outside the UK or a new website, research the site - check all the facts before you buy.

"At best, these consoles would have led to disappointment on Christmas morning; at worst, they could have caused serious harm or injury.

"Counterfeit goods also cause considerable damage the UK economy by undermining genuine UK retailers and small businesses who are honest and abide by the rules."

There you are then. Don't buy any £40 quid DS Lites from the corner shop.
