As you may know my PC's internet is down and i'm currently using my laptop. Its not just the ineternet that is the problem, for the last few months my PC has been getting slower and slower. After all my fiddlings i've come to the conclusion that i have to reinstall windows. I have a 1TB external hard drive so have plenty of space for my 80gb (max i think theres only 50-60gb on there at the mo, but will do a clean up to reduce it). So i want to do a full back up of the drive so that after my reinstall i can kep my settings. Anyways anyone know how to do a full backup of my C drive in a simple/lazy way. I tried to copy&paste it but is said "cannot copy files as they are in use". Are there any programs that i can download on my laptop and then transfer to my PC. Is what i want even possible? i.e. back up, reintall win and then transfer all my settings (especially save passwords, which i can't remember) and stuff. |

you can't just copy and paste a whole drive with windows installed on it. there is a files and settings transfer wizard but i don't think it's much cop tbh. most of the stuff you'll want should only be media files anyways. which you hopefully have in your my documents (which can be copied and pasted) or a seperate partition on your drive incase windows needs to be reinstalled.... one thing to do is backup your internet faves. thats usually a thing most peeps forget (if using firefox i highly recommend an add on called foxmarks which saves your faves on a server for use with multiple machines and can be downloaded and updated anywhere) also if you have multiple passwords for sites and stuff the password manager file can be saved and used on your new install. |

Actually my lapop is a Time machine, thats how old it is. That foxmarks thing would be useful except that my comp can't connect to the net. looks like there isn't a lazy one-click option so i will have to force myself to dedicate some time to slogging through it all. |

i transferred my old pc to my laptop, using the transfer wizard, not sure about all my settings but all my important stuff, music, photos , documents came over fine but i had backed up on my external first just in case, as longas you have your new and old pc connected to the router or each other it should work ok, doesnt the external have software for a complete move? i think mine does?just looked at the last post date, suppose im a bit late lol,,,, anyone use piclens or cooliris with firefox? strongly reccomend piclens if your browsing pictures a lot |
