WARNING _ this book contains no reference to pixies , Thorag the Neffleready , Paladins , Star treck people things or harry fucking Potter ..... read on if you like a good fucking book ! "If you march your winters journeys you will have your reward , ... so long as all you want is penguin's egg" - Apsley Gerrard-Cherry. The book , "Cherry" a biography by Sara Wheeler. this is the 1st biog' about this man , amazing really for a bloke so key in the polar expedition and who schooled with some pretty famous people ! Cherry was one of the men on Scotts south pole expedition that failed in one of its goals ... to reach the SP first. What i really enjoyed is how the book delivers what its like in middle class england and the neurosis of certain men like Cherry and their fears of failure and change . It also goes deeply into Cherrys depression and self blame of his best friends deaths .... (from where they put the food/fuel supplies along the route to Cherrys re-supply 150mile trek to the 1 ton depot being just a few miles from where 3 of the returning SP crew lay dying in a tent . the book really does get under the mans skin , and you can see as his life unfolds in the book that this man cannot cope with his thoughts ... Also a great insight into how they planned to abduct Admunsen who was also preparing the same journey .. anyways , im 2/3rds my way through this book n i happily recommend it  |
