The people at speedtest.net have launched pingtest.net.

The site will test your line quality of your internet connection which determines how well your connection streams videos music and online gaming.

A is a good line and F is very poor

I might be boring, but inside there's interesting person waiting to get out.
I'm not sure how you'd ping a server and not be able to see if there was any packet loss. Unless is not actually packet loss but rather error correction.

First glance, my opinion anyway, the test is meaningless.

Boomer, try to get the name or the IP address of the server that you tested from. Be interesting to see your own Ping and Trace Route results.

How the feck this would relate to voice call quality i've no idea.

And Daz, Kingston have given up. They've given the Service Management contract to BT. So when it breaks, it's a miserable, bored Openreach engineer that comes out, ahem.

6.Why was I unable to run the packet loss test?
The packet loss test requires that the Java Runtime Environment be installed on your computer. Also your firewall must allow the test to communicate to the Pingtest.net servers. If our test is unable to communicate with Java or the packets are getting blocked by a firewall then the packet loss test will be skipped.

OK, another quick look at this ping test malarky. There's nothing there that Command Prompt can't do. Also, completely pointless when it comes to measuring connection problems/speed, as the ping results will always be specific to whatever site/server you're trying to access.

By-the-by, BT's and TalkTalk's (Opal Telecom) core voice network is VoIP, so it may travel 150miles, but it possibly will only go about 4 miles at most over the copper cables you see in the street.

There, soapbox is now free :117

Aye , i didnt think KC / Karoo or whatever their moniker is today ever owned the lines , i thought they just rented the infrastructure exclusively from BT .

Tho it IS a BT line as far as the rest of the world is concerned it isn't .
an example(SKY dont recognise it as a BT line and cant allow exclusive phone/web/tv package deals to us )
its all a bit wank really
