Halo 3's replays and video capture tools are awfully neat. That feature becomes a glaring omission when you go from being able to relive any moment you experience in Halo 3 to being completely unable to watch what just happened in the previous game -- not to mention that really awesome game you played months ago. So what solution is there? Well, each developer could go through the process of implementing their own replay system, but that could mean a lot of work that's not spent on the game in question. Well, what if Microsoft implemented the ability to capture video so that it worked with all games? That's a possibility and, according to at least one developer, it's actually something they're working on. Speaking with Kotaku, the developer said, "We'd love to have video capture in our game, but why work on something that the platform holder is already developing." As you can imagine, that was likely a Freudian slip; the identity of the developer is being kept anonymous so as to save he or she from any potential backlash from potentially blowing the lid on a future Microsoft announcement. Following the unintentional review, Kotaku then spoke with Xbox Live digital games director Scott Austin, who said of the possibility, "We are always thinking about ways that Live at the platform level can make games better. I'm not going to comment on video capture, but you can assume we are thinking about ways to make things more interactive." You can take that however you wish, but he certainly didn't outright deny the possibility of universal video capture coming to 360 in the future. Whether that's because it's something actually being developed or it's simply an idea that's been discussed, we might not know for quite a long time.
