IGN has snagged the first details on Tom Clancy's H.A.W.X., the title previously known under its working title of Tom Clancy's Air Combat.

In development for PS3, Xbox 360, and PC at Ubisoft Romania, H.A.W.X. features a world on the brink of disaster. Set in 2012, the world has become increasingly reliant on private military companies (PMCs), which have of course pushed the tensions to near global conflict. Sounds like...well...a lot of other recent military games, but we'll give it the benefit of the doubt since the storyline isn't really that important in a game such as this.

To help gamers fight the battle, H.A.W.X. features an Enhanced Reality System (ERS), which features radars, missile detection, an anti-crash system, damage control, a tactical map, information relays, weapons trajectory control, and the ability to command AI squadmates. The more you turn ERS on the safer you'll be, but at the cost of less freedom. H.A.W.X. will also feature four-player jump-in co-op in its campaign mode, over 50 planes to control, and 16 player online dogfights where players can earn experience and in-game cash used to unlock new weaponry.

sounds promising...

Tom Clancy's HAWX delivers an intense and authentic aerial combat experience by fully leveraging the benefits of the next-generation platform. The story begins in the year 2012. As the era of the nation-state draws quickly to a close, the rules of warfare evolve even more rapidly. More and more nations become increasingly dependent on private military companies (PMCs), elite mercenaries with a lax view of the law. The Reykjavik Accords further legitimize their existence by authorizing their right to serve in every aspect of military operations. While the benefits of such PMCs are apparent, growing concerns surrounding giving them too much power begin to mount.

Tom Clancy's HAWX is the first air combat game set in the world-renowned Tom Clancy's video game universe. Cutting-edge technology, devastating firepower, and intense dogfights bestow this new title a deserving place in the prestigious Tom Clancy franchise. Soon, flying at Mach 3 becomes a right, not a privilege.

Features:

* ENHANCED REALITY SYSTEM (E.R.S.) - E.R.S. is in-game technology that helps turn novice aviators into elite pilots of the future. The Enhanced Reality System is the backbone of the HAWX flight experience: radars and incoming missile detection, anti-crash system, damage control system, tactical map and information relay, and weapons trajectory control. E.R.S. also allows players to issue orders to their squadron, making this system as iconic to HAWX as the Cross-Com system is to Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter!
* ASSISTANCE MODE - Players can ease into their flight missions and gain a level of comfort with the use of the assistance mode. Once employed, players can take full advantage of their technological support through the E.R.S and gain maximum piloting security. If the situation calls for the player to unleash the full potential of the aircraft, the assistance mode can be switched off and all safety features will be deactivated. This comes with increased risks, but allows the player advanced dogfighting maneuvers and stunning third-person views.
* REVOLUTIONARY MULTIPLAYER - For the first time ever in the air-combat genre, players will be able to experience the entire solo campaign in four-player JUMP IN co-op mode. In PVP mode, players can challenge up to 15 friends in intense dogfighting sessions and find out who's the top gun. Winning players are rewarded with experience points and money to unlock more weapons.
* REALISM AND AUTHENTICITY - Players have the opportunity to take the throttle of over 50 of the world's famous aircrafts, as well as being able to dogfight over realistic modern landscapes that have endured years of post-war trauma.

Well it looks like your in luck because a demo is to be released tomorrow (Feb 11th).

The demo will have two missions. The first, Operation: Off Certification, will be a training mode, while the second, Operation: Glass Hammer, will take place in the skies above Rio De Janeiro, Brazil. The demo will also offer three fighter jets, the F-16A Fighting Falcon, the SU-35 Super Flanker, and the AV-8B Harrier II, as well as the option for four-player co-op.

Well finally picked this 'Fucking Shit' game up and it's actually not that bad......yeah the constant babbling of the Wing Commander does begin to grate after a while. The control system become natural after about ten mins.

The multiplayer is lacking some depth although they have already announced some new content, likely to be premium of course.

However overall it was worth getting rid of COD:WaW to get this.

BTW H.A.W.X cost me a tenner at HMV after I traded in COD:WaW....

i'd probably get it apart from the fact it's shit. i have bought games after trying the demo and thinking they were shit just because others were getting it for multiplayer. i've even liked some of them and enjoyed them but i really can't see myself getting this until it's bargain basement time. it's certainly not better than any of the cod franchise.

understatement of the year. the whole point of me picking this up would be for the multiplayer.

wtf?!? games radar gave this an 8/10. i'm usually in the same boat as them regarding reviews but i still think they've got this wrong.

HAWX is exactly what you want from a flight combat game. It’s instantly accessible without pandering to thickies, it leaves it up to the player whether they want to use a more advanced control scheme (but cleverly incorporates the two), and the missions are varied and exciting. Ubisoft Bucharest has obviously learned one hell of a lot from the underwhelming, period dullathon Blazing Angels, making HAWX leaner, meaner and more addictive. It’s our current flight combat game of choice.

Well after trying out the on-line MP this morning. I'm a fair bit more impressed, of course I got my arse handed to me on a plate but after a few games I started to match and even beat several of the ppl in the lobby.
And as well you rank up fairly quickly, and as such unlock bigger and better planes to use.

The Wing Commander is easily got round. Simply mute his arse!!!

Also as I have already stated they are releashing some DL content for the game, so I'm expecting new planes and new game modes.

i was chatting to a couple of peeps i know online and they reckon the demo didn't really do the game much justice. the jury is still out on this but i may be able to borrow it and see how it goes.

i got it and i love it, though i can see the co-op removing all challenge whatsoever. Levelling up and unlocking shit is done in both single and multiplayer, so if you unlock a plane in SP you can use it online and vice versa, which is quite nice.

But yeah, I enjoy it enough to recommend it. The fun does lie in challenging yourself though, so if you play it on easy it'll suck, whereas harder difficulties are a blast because of the insane stunts you have to do to keep on top of the baddies.

i concur, the demo didn't do it any favours simply because it chose quite a slow, generic level that didn't really show off a lot of what the game has to offer.
