Just had an idea about starting a book club sort of thing.

Every month or 2-weeks we all decide on a book to read, read it and then discuss it.

I think its a nice way to get to know each other more, broaden our horizons, add a little culture (well maybe not when i think about what sort of things meaty might read), prove The Times wrong by showing that gamers have brains enough to read, etc.

So what do you guys think?

i'd pay money to see what daz thinks of some of the books you might suggest reading. i read quite a lot when i'm offshore as t.v is shit....... unless you download whole series of stuff at a time and give it the time it deserves.

i'll give it a whirl.

that 2nd one actually looks interesting --- :)

i am searching for a book describing How and why things were discovered / invented and not so much how they work , but how someone figured a way of discovering how something worked

eg - the weight/mass of the earth , for me its not enough to say it weight such n such , or explain HOW you work it out , more interesting is discovering how people figured out how to figure out how it is so :) -- oh im confused now, and OT

be grateful, books are okay unless the spine hits you first. Then it's bruise time for your face

I'm going to start reading American Psycho by Bret Easton Ellis in the next couple of days.

Anyone else going to give it ago?

I saw the film years ago and was a bit this way and that on whether i liked it or not but i've heard that the book it way better so i'm giving it a go.

I've got the pdf if you want it.

Basically the only thing i use my PSP for nowadays is for reading ebooks.

Its annoying, for some reason (probably because i keep seeing trailers for the next underworld film) i've got the wanting to read a good book based around werewolves as protaganists but after searching google, wiki and amazon the only ones i can find are either young adult or romance.

Revolutionary Road a book by Richard Yates is meant to be good , the film sounds like it could be worth watching too -

Rich Kline whos reviews i follow a lot as i tend to agree with them rates the movie quite highly . ---- It may be the first novel i read .

What do you think a person should do first , a book or the Movie ??? im thinking book first as your imagination should create the scenes and not the director in the movie you see .... what u reckon ?

depends on how good your imagination is. if you have no imagination and a short attention span, then go see a film.

Ok i'm giving up on American Psycho. I've given it 50 pages and i'm totally not liking it. I normally give a book i'm not into a chance until 30 odd pages then leave it, but as i was trying it for the sake of this thread i gave it another 20 pages until i finally said fuck this shit.

On the subject of reading a book before or after seeing the film, I'm of two minds about it.
Although i generally like to read the book before hand because they are usually better than the adaptions in the sense that they are a whole instead of a watered down version by hollywood. However i find that if i watch the film first i don't get half as annoyed because when reading a book you imagine things in certain way and most of the time the film is totally different, so you spend alot of the time thinking things like whatshisname should be played whoisit or things like Harry potters eyes are supposed to be green not blue, Duddits is not a fucking alien!!!!! (Stephen King's DreamCatcher film adaptation was an abomination) etc

Never tried any of the dragonlance book, was never really into fantasy (D&D like fantasy i mean) fiction i'm more into horror/sci-fi like Stephen King and Dean Koontz. However i have read all the terry Pratchett books (several of them multiple times) but they are in a genre of there own. I'm also quite fond of john Grissum books.

A few of years ago i came across a fantasyish book series i liked by someone called Lian Hearn (not sure thats spelt right but doesn't matter as its a psudanym for some other auther) and is set in feudal japan and features characters with magic ninjaish powers. They were called "Across the nightengale floor" "The grass for his pillow" "The brilliance of the moon" there is a 4th but i can't remember its name.

i'm currently in the middle of the Dexter trillogy of books and have to say that so far they are one of those rare occurances where the TV(/film) adaptation is better than the book.
