She wondered how long it had been since she had stepped foot in these woods. Ever since she was driven away by the ones she trusted most she never dared to look back. But there was always something inside her, itching to come back. Did they feel regret? Did they miss her? She couldn't help but let these foolish thoughts cloud her head. She may not have been human but she was around them long enough to let their emotions affect her thoughts. Syria took a deep breath, adjusted her quiver and began walking into the woods. There was no point in turning back now. After all, she was still curious how the village was doing. Perhaps, if she was lucky, they wouldn't recognize her. But Syria knew that wouldn't be the case. She hadn't changed in the past three years, not one bit. Maybe they would be nice and at least pretend they didn't know her. Syria couldn't help but let out a soft chuckle. She was being silly, really. Get a grip, she thought to herself, everything will be fine. It always was. As she proceeded further into the forest Syria began to relax. The familiarity of her surroundings made her comfortable, despite the growing dread she was feeling deep down. She even caught herself humming quite a bit. It was funny how nostalgic she felt for a place she didn't even live in very long. She loved the smell of the pine, the sound of leaves crunching under her soles and the randomly strays of light leaking through the forest's umbrella. Why hadn't she come here earlier? She made a mental note to herself to never again let her pride, or fear, get in the way of her explorer's curiosity. Just as her spirits began to pick up she heard some rustling nearby. Syria stopped and immediately her happy thoughts were replaced with instinctive feelings of danger. She glanced around cautiously, her hands already reaching for her bow. It couldn't have been someone from the village. She was still three miles from the closest riverbed and none of the villagers ever wandered too far from there. She quickly strung her bow and began scanning the area carefully. She had always heard stories about monsters and demons residing in these woods and was unsure of whether she was mentally prepared to fight them. Sure, she enjoyed picking fights now and then, but she definitely wasn't suicidal. Syria placed her bow around her neck and quickly turned to the nearest tree. Using all the body strength she had she managed to pull herself up and rest on the branch closest to the ground. It wouldn't be enough to save her from harm if the creature could climb but maybe it would buy her enough time to come up with a better plan. She nocked an arrow and pulled it back ever so slightly, her eyes still scanning the ground cautiously. The rustling noise grew louder, and closer. Soon, it would reveal itself. |

As if it knew she was waiting, the beast emerged from the shadows of the forest. It paused for a minute, ears high, searching for the girl who was no longer on ground level. Syria's heart sank at the site of the creature. It was no monster, no demon, no spirit from the other realm. It was a wolf and a rather large one too. Now, you might not understand why Syria felt so disheartened by the site of the wolf. For many it would be a relief to find their advisory be something logical, real and familiar. But the problem with this is that sometimes, you can be a bit too familiar with your enemy. This was a wolf and wolves traveled in packs. Syria quickly drew her bow backwards. She was almost positive the rest of the pack wouldn't be too far behind. Given the opportunity, the scout would alert them and she would either be dead within minutes or driven up a tree for the rest of the week. So instead, Syria opted for a third path, to quickly dispose of the beast before her and flee before the pack caught on. This may seem slightly cowardly but Syria was smart enough to realize that not all battles could be won and she would rather escape now with the option of returning for revenge then to blindly follow her pride. She held her bow steady, breathing softly and waited for the wolf to come closer. She could have shot him from afar but as she was barely even proficient with the bow the chance of her killing him was low. So instead, she waited. The closer the wolf was, the more damage she could inflict with a single arrow. The wolf was cautious, just like Syria. He knew someone was nearby, he could smell the faint aroma of human flesh amongst the pine trees. The wolf began making his way towards Syria's hiding spot. She felt herself tense up slightly but waited nonetheless. The closer the wolf got, the slower she breathed. He may be able to catch her scent but he wouldn't realize she was on the branch until it was too late. Just a little closer... she thought to herself, pulling the string back ever so slightly. Syria didn't even give the wolf enough time to growl in realization. She let the arrow fly straight into the wolf's eye and leaped off the branch, using her body weight to knock the wolf to the ground. The wolf let out a yelp and Syria fell onto her side painfully. The wolf wasn't exactly the softest landing pad. She quickly scrambled to her feet and grabbed another arrow but before she could even pull the string back the wolf pounced on ripping the bow out of her hand. Syria gasped for breath as her back hit the ground once more and the wolf sank it's fangs deep into her left shoulder. Without thinking she took the arrow she had been holding and jammed it as hard as she could into the wolf's other eyes. It let out another yelp before rolling off of her in pain. Syria focused her energy and sent a gust of wind towards the wolf, throwing it into a nearby tree and knocking it unconscious. Not bothering to check if it were still alive Syria grabbed her bow and made a run for it. Her head throbbed in pain and her shoulder wouldn't stop bleeding. So I may not have come out perfect but at least I'm still in one piece. Kyria couldn't help but grin despite all her acquired injuries. She had completely forgotten about the village, her anxiety and the past. Now all she thought of was how angry that wolf would be when it came to and she couldn't help but feel the rush of excitement. "You're such a barbarian," she laughed speaking to no one in particular. 45 MP / 50 MP Edited by Syria Kraemeen, Sep 1 2009, 05:06 PM.
