Quick question here. I want to buy some led strip lights, and a switch to turn the lights on/off whenever I want, I want to know what I will need. Down here is the sort of common sense part. 1. Led Strip lights 2. (What wire will I need to connect them) 3. (What type of switch will I need to turn them on/off) Then how do I go about connecting them to the battery for example. Also will a switch like this one work. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/AIRCRAFT-TOGGLE-SWITCH-W-CARBON-COVER-LED-WHITE-12V-CAR-_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQhashZitem415327b0e4QQitemZ280567984356QQptZMotorsQ5fCarQ5fTruckQ5fPartsQ5fAccessories#ht_5141wt_732[/url] Edited by ESguy, Oct 25 2010, 08:35 PM.

rock on karan! alright, theres a few ways to do this since i know a way or two around electricity courtesy of my dad who is a mechanic and is teaching me.. i pretty much did all of the wiring myself in my car (and wiring my 2nd grille led kinda set a shortage to only my grille led... so i got a project to look into why they dont work anymore) but anyway, go to your local automotive store... they have SEVERAL different types of switches... led, switches... almost anything like this... i would not trust from ebay because the simple reason a lot is cheaply chinese replica's that can cause problems down the road (that goes for everything) you are going to need to buy a spool of wire.. mostly any type of wire will do but also you must have a positive and a negative (your ground!) and also think... do you want led in your grille? if so, and to wire that to a switch (like i did) you will need to pass it into your firewall to under the dashboard (which is why i used some really thin wire) note: passing the wire from firewall to under the dashboard to whatever desired location is a bitch to do.. another thing to consider, what do you want to do... do it cheap and wire a switch to a ground, and directly to your battery.. without any sort of fuse attached to prevent short circuiting? or make things easier and tap into something that already has power.. and still be able to use a switch! :D i tapped into my cigarette lighter near my shifter because i never use it and it would give me no problems what so ever.. doing this would require for the led lights to work only when the key is inserted into the ignition.. BAD idea when at car shows.. i dont like the fact that when i talk to someone when i have the key in the ignition to show the led.. my car can easily be stolen x.x at the tower shops car show which is off 595 and university drive, there is a vendor there called BESTLED... his leds come in alot of different sizes and has such a selection to choose from, and most of all.. they are waterproof and extremely bright.. he prices them at 10.00 a foot which is very reasonable for me and i trust them now i do hope this has solved alot of questions, and i can take pictures to where i have already wired.. to give some ideas, but message me and ill give u my number if you have any questions and WOW... is that a post... LOL |

I have your number. Just late so didn't wanna call. And yes. That is a post. Well I am going to put them on the grill. The only place I want LEDs are inside the grill and under the dash. And want a switch for each. But for now just wanted to do the grill LEDs. And I passed 4 gauge wire from the battery to the trunk so yea I know what a pain it is to stick wire where it just doesn't wanna go. I am going to go to look around for a shop tomorrow and see if I can find switches and the wire and the LEDs. I'll be hitting you up if anything. And thanks for offering your help. |

I was looking at the way to wire them, now I wanted one with an led, so I guess its gonna be the one with the most cables. If anyone can confirm that this is the correct way to wire them. The one I would need would be the one on the left, I guess. --------------With LED---------------------------Without LED-------------- Posted Image Posted Image AAAnd! Do I need a fuse like shown in the picture? Edited by ESguy, Oct 26 2010, 07:41 PM.

alright, you dont have to run ground directly to the battery... it can be the car itself.. just has to be sanded and bare metal which is so much easier than running another annoying wire... and u will only need a fuse... if u do not tap into anything... like i was saying, u can tap into the cigarette lighter for say... run the power on the switch to the cigarette lighter (and the fuse is already there!) then wire the acc to the led and run ground to a metal part... make sure its sanded and fine so it gets a direct contact, and then put a bolt to hold it in place |

Allright I got it. What I'm going to need the led strip 5 amp fuse I'm guessing, it's just a single led strip switch with an led light wire what I am going to do to wire 1.switch which has +, -, and acc a. From positive to battery, fuse ~1 foot from battery b. Ground negative to car c. Run acc to positive on led strip 2. Led strip which has +, - a. Run positive to acc on switch (said above) b. Ground negative to car. 3. Battery which has +, - a. Run positive to positive on switch (said above) b. Leave negative alone a total of 4 connections are going to be made. Two will be grounded switch and led (-) one from battery (+) to switch (+) one from switch (acc) to led (+) I think that's all I need to do. Edited by ESguy, Oct 27 2010, 01:06 AM.
