Old Japanese House

Time: 0630AM

David had been the first to wake from his light sleep, surveying the room as soon as his eyes opened. Satisfied with the result, he rose to his feet, scratching Pep behind the ears to wake him up, and walked into the kitchen, beckoning the dog to follow. Opening the fridge and seeming unsatisfied with the contents, he pulled out the final piece of meat and dropped it onto the plate, performing some quick gesture over it which caused steam to rise from it for a second as the ice on it melted. Pep, happy to see the food, followed David without letting his eyes leave the plate; after getting outside, the Servant placed the plate on the ground, and went back in for another plate for milk. After ensuring their new tenant was happily munching away at his breakfast, he decided to go back inside - there weren't enough ingredients for preparing breakfast, which meant he would have to buy them, but... His eyes came upon the sleeping form of the girl who said she liked him yesterday, causing a smile to come to his face. ...But that would be boring, given what happened yesterday, and he had to pick up the motorbike and the devices anyway. If so, then... "Time to wake up, Princess. We've got to go do a few things, remember?"

Even though she had not opened her eyes, Hikaru was aware that it was morning already. Instead, rolled her face onto her pillow, pulled her blankets tighter. Then, a melodious voice, unlike any other this world began drawing her away from the land of dreams. The voice itself was soothing, but at the same time, it hit underlying nerve to her want to wind her hands around the owner of the voice, and shut him up like an alarm clock. She groaned, and hid her head under the pillow, before finally surrending her cosy covers. Still half-awake, she made her way to the bathroom to get ready for the day, while David clears the room. Moments later, she was in her uniform, carrying her school bag, ready to leave. Pepper de Souffle stared at his two new masters. They fed him and let him live their home, surely he could consider them as that now, right? They seemed to be leaving. He sat near the entrance, wagging his tail slowly, his eyes begging them to take him with them.

David, by now dressed, had leaned against the inside of the gate, waiting for Hikaru, his arms crossed. Looking around lazily, his eyes met with the dog's gaze, which seemed to radiate an unspoken wish. "We cant take you with us, Pep. That'd be pretty cruel of us, seeing as how we cant fit you on the motorbike. We can go out for a walk later though, how's that sound?"

Pepper let out a reluctant whine and sat down along an invisible line. He paws attempted to cross it, but he would always snap back within the limit when he met David's gaze. He hung his head and gave a disappointed, but resigned look.

Hikaru walked past Pepper. She gave the husky a scratch behind the ear before joining David. "We will be back before you know it. I put your cushion on the veranda, so you have a place to sleep. Be good and bye, Pepper!" She bade the dog farewell before closing those sad eyes behind the gate.

"He looks miserable." she finally said to David. "Are you sure we can't take him?"

"Like I said, for about half our trip we'll be on a motorbike, and that's cruel to him. If we take him with us, we also need to go back to the house to drop him off before going to school, or else, well... Who knows what will happen." He opened the gate, letting the girl walk out first, and locked it behind them, giving a short wave to Pep.

Hikaru felt a pang of guilt in her chest for leaving Pepper alone in the mansion. Aren't dogs social creatures? Will he be alright without his pack? "Fine." She relented and focused on the list of things they need to do before school. "Where to first? We gave almost all our steak to Pepper."

"Well, we need to go to Verde to pick up the motorcycle and the pagers anyway so... Why not go there to eat? Not like we're having some sort of financial problems."

Hikaru laughed. "Yeah, most definitely not." They weaved through the narrow alley streets, until they emerged at the main junction connecting the western suburb and the east.

David paused slightly, as if hesitant - but it was only for a moment, like a cloud drifting across his features as he looked at the corner of the street. Just like it had appeared, it was gone, his smile returning to its old, smirking self, as he gave a cough raising his right elbow a bit.

"Anything a matter?" Hikaru noticed David had slowed down a little behind her. Then she noticed he was offering his elbow. "Oh." A slight blush crept onto her cheeks as she warp her arm over his. They then continued their path along Fuyuki Bridge.

"There should be some shops open for breakfast near Verde now. They're old shops, but too good to go away." she explained when they were walking along the bridge. "Did you know? This skyline didn't exist ten years ago." She gestured at the tall white buildings dominating the horizon. "One day, people wanted to make this place look more a city. And poof! They sprang out of nowhere like daisies. Well, that's not what happened, but you know my meaning."

A small chuckle escaped David but he did not comment anything for once, content to listening to Hikaru for once. It was refreshing, for once, to hear the girl talk excitedly about the city, and caused him to look at the surroundings more carefully than he did before. Things looked different than before now, perhaps due to the rain yesterday, or that his companion was in a generally good mood.

Finally breaking the silence, he spoke: "Well, thats civilization for you I guess. Good that there is a clear threshold between the two - old city and new one I mean - people can pick whichever suits them more instead of arguing about which is better. As far as old food shops go... Well, I suppose, if you want to go there, I wont object. I was actually considering going to a better restaurant since money is really pointless right now, but its your choice."

"They only open in the mornings. I don't normally go to that side of town, unless I'm on church business, or getting new pulsies." Hikaru chuckled sideways. "But a date is always a good reason to go. I know it's a little too early for that, but who cares." She tugged his arm urging him to pick up the pace.

"All right then. You know the city better, so go ahead and lead on." David seemed satisfied with the explaination, he continued looking around. The air had a pleasantly fresh aroma, and despite it being slightly chilly, it was not something that bothered him, but rather refreshed.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

They arrived in a street across the main Verde building. The row of shops here were dwarfed by the giant neighbours. It was a disorganized sight compared to the smooth and modern design of the Verde. Yet, they were thriving with life. Businessmen, clerks, workers and students filled the small street, hunting for their earliest meal of the day. The interior of the shops were small. To make up for the lack of space, some tables were out on the streets. Hikaru did not stop until they reach a shop titled 'Akiko's Nikuman Store' and secured one of the outdoor tables.

The transfer student seemed unconcerned at the reaction that a foreigner was getting - the usual, raised eyebrows, heads turned to see someone who stood out. He looked past the crowd to look at the buildings, interested in the architecture, and inhaled the various aromas as they neared the restaurant. It seemed cozy enough for his own taste, as he did not grimace or make faces, sitting down in the chair indicated and looking around once more with satisfaction. Picking up the menu, he skimmed it until locating what he wanted, and raised his hand, calling a sleepy looking waitress over, and pointing her to Hikaru.

Hikaru picked up the flimsy, laminated menu and scanned the printed words. The waitress hid her yawn, before holding up her notebook and her pen ready to write down the order. "I would like three beef nikuman, please and milk tea to go with it." Hikaru said to the waitress, who tap her pen on the notepad at the same time. Hikaru turned to David. "What would you like?"

"Seafood ones - same amount, and black coffee. Need to wake up properly."

Hikaru let out an abrupt giggled, which confused the waitress. However, since it was not her place nose into customers relationship, she merely let it pass and wrote down the foreign boy's order. The waitress then took out a number and placed on their table, and went to attend some newly arrived customers.

"What? Something on my face?" David smiled at the girl's reaction, then taking the number and twisting it around in his hands curiously. Putting it back down, he retured his gaze to Hikaru: "No really, what?"

"You and seafood." Hikaru replied, shaking her head slightly. Another waitress came and handed out their drinks. Hot, black steaming coffee for David, and brown milk tea for Hikaru.

"I happen to like seafood." David raised an eyebrow, sipping the coffee. "Something wrong with liking a certain type of food, so long as its not noodles and coke?" He chuckled slightly, shaking his head. "Meat is a bit boring, fish is... Regular. Seafood, there are many kinds and species, the variety is quite a bit larger, and they always differ in taste."

"No, not at all." Hikaru hid her laugh under her palm. It was when the same young waitress returned, balancing two plates in her tray. The buns given to David had their surface twisted in a spiral pattern, while the ones Hikaru had were smooth, marking the different contents of each type.

Hikaru gingerly took one of the three buns in front her and bit a mouthful.

David had done the same, letting his right arm drop over the back of the chair, developing a thoughtful expression on his face while he tasted the food. "Hmm..." He sipped the coffee, clicking his tongue. "Shrimp, lobster and some sort of clam. Pretty good - though I think the dough itself should have been slightly different. Quite an interesting combination, though." He took another bite, nodding to himself.

After they had their breakfast, the couple left their seats to attend to other stuff before before school. Hikaru was turning into a corner when she ran into an old lady and a woman in her mid-forties. She froze. "Is that you, Hika-chan?" the woman asked. "Aunt Mai? Grandmother?" Hikaru mustered a rigid grin. "Didn't expect to see you here. I thought you always shop in Jougi Avenue."

"Mother wants a herb that only the old stores here stock." replied Aunt Mai. "How have you been of late?"

"Fine, same as usual." replied Hikaru smilingly, attempting to hide her discomfort of the meeting. Aunt Mai looked over her shoulder and saw David. "Oh, a foreigner. Friend of yours?" Hikaru nodded hesitantly. "Aren't you going to introduce us?" Like a puppet on strings, Hikaru complied. "Aunt Mai. David Lagana." she gestured at the old lady, who had been observing with hawkish eyes. "And this is my grandmother."

"Pleasure to make your acquaintance." David touched the fingers of his right hand to his left shoulder, making a slight bow in the direction of the two women. "I've recently been transferred to Japan, and Hikaru has been so kind as to help me get used the country and its customs."

"Oh, you must be the boy Hideki mentioned at dinner last night." Aunt Mai remarked. Hikaru closed her eyes and winced. "He said you two are in a relationship. I never imagined the day seeing you finally becoming a woman, Hikaru." She then leaned towards Hikaru. "If you have any problems, you can always come and talk to me. We'll have lunch at the fancy restaurant in Verde. Wasn't that one of your favourite places, hm?" "Erm, yeah."Hikaru nodded vaguely and accepted her aunt's held out hand.

"I don't think she needs any help, Mai." came a hoarse voice. "With a rich boyfriend at highschool, she has even outdone her mother. Come on, my hips are hurting. I want to get back home as soon as possible." With the matriach's order, Aunt Mai reluctantly followed her, mouthing a 'Call me', before leaving.

"Mmm... Well that was unexpected," said David, when they resumed their journey, "was that his mother, or his aunt?"

Hikaru shrugged, as if shaking off her surprised reaction and the memories of the past off her shoulders. "Aunt. My uncle's wife." She gave a short reply, and then switched the subject. "We're late meeting up with Haruka now. Let's get going."

David nodded wordlessly, understanding she didnt wish to pursue the topic any further, called over the waitress and paid for the food. Its taste seemed to be fading very quickly given the atmosphere that was just introduced by the arrival of the two women, and he pondered how he could revert it back to something slightly more fitting.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The shop was across the street. Hidden from the road by the huge Verde mall building. Hikaru manuveured around the alleyway, still dark from the lack of sunshine. There's noticieably less people here now. And most shops were still tightly shut with steel garage doors. Except for one, which the door was partially up, and a radio could be heard from inside. Hikaru hoped Haruka would find this place. She hadn't thought that someone like Haruka wouldn't come to this part of town often.

"Relax." David placed his hand on Hikaru's shoulder. "We came here to make a purchase, whats with that look?"

"Would they find their way here? I forgot how winding the route here was." Hikaru craned her head to see if anyone was entering the way they came.

"She'll be fine. She seemed a like a smart girl." David shrugged, leaning against the nearby wall. "Besides, she's got monkeyman along with her, he should be good as a transport if nothing else... Though I doubt she'd enjoy that."

"Might as well get a headstart." said Hikaru. She then slipped under the metal door, where the radio playing oldies grew louder. It was a small and dark shop, with television and radios piled along the shelves. There was a small radiator in a corner, which was enough to bring the tiny shop to a comfortable temperature.

A skinny old man was in a chair next to the table with the radio and a mug of black coffee beside it. He looked at the two with suspicious eyes. "Students? Skipping school today, aren't you?" he said sternly, "And there's nothing for you to buy here. We are closed." Hikaru momentarily turned to the door and back. "But door's open." "That doesn't mean we are. I just like to have the morning breeze in." He said, visibly irritated. Hikaru pressed on. "We are not skipping school. We just wanted to get some stuff from you before we went. That's why we came early.

"There's nothing for you kids to play here. Just boring old man's stuff." The man grunted.

"Well, chances are we're going to miss the first class for sure... I'll take the blame for that, old man." David seemed to be more cheerful than Hikaru, loking around the store curiously despite the man's grumbling. "As for old stuff, you never know. This girl here's an odd case in the first place, and me, well, I always liked stuff I didnt know much about. We're looking for pagers, by the way." He picked up an old radio, seemingly interested in its construction.

The old man grunted again. "Pagers are new, and quite expensive." He peered at them through his glasses. There was a twinkle of amusement. "You kids wouldn't be able to afford them." Hikaru brightened up with glee. "So you have them then. Could you show us one?" The old man held his hands up in resignation. "Fine, but don't break them."

He went behind the shop and returned with two small devices in his palm. He laid them on the counter like a jeweller would handle diamond rings. He demonstrated the pagers with voice messages. "They don't save messages though. It only replays three times, and then it's deleted."

"That functionality's enough for me. You?" David turn to Hikaru. "Interesting design." He looked at one of the devices closely without picking it up. "Batteries?" That was directed at the shopkeeper.

"It runs on rechargeable 4.4 Volt mercury batteries." Hikaru nodded. "That's convienient. And it should last for 3-4 hours of heavy use. They also use a UHF frequency from 464 to 475 MHz. Not too bad if you ask me." The shopkeeper blinked, and then confirmed what she said. "Yes, yes." Finally, as if he made up his mind, he said: "I had twelve of these in stock. Sold eight of them to old regulars. The rest of them were sitting in the storage for months. If you would like these two, I wouldn't mind giving you a discount."

"Sounds good to me. We'll take a charger too, I think." David dug into his pocket to retrieve his wallet.

Hikaru placed her finger to her cheek, had a thought, then added. "We would like another one." The shopkeeper stared at her quizzically, but said nothing. He disappeared to back again. Hikaru turned to David and gave him a slight nod. The third pager was intended for him.

David smirked slightly, as if confirming he understood her intention. "Yes, and another charger I think." He looked around while the shopkeeper had been gone, interested in the store's surroundings: dusty, but well cared for. His attention was drawn back to the counter when the shopkeeper returned.

The old man returned with an extra pager. "An extra charger, you say?" His arm went underneath the counter and took out another charger. All that was left was monetary transaction.

David silently handed the man the money required and took the change when the man counted it out, pushing the bag holding their purchase towards Hikaru.

They left the tiny shop. Hikaru took out one of the pagers and handed it to David. "Yours. Thought it would be better if you have one."

"Yes, I realized your intention." David took the device and attached it to his belt, leaving it in plain view. "I think its better this way."

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

For the next item on the list, they went round the corner, back to the Verde main complex, where the bike store was yesterday. A sleepy worker was polishing a display bike outside the entrance.

"Hello. I've purchased a bike here yesterday and had some custom details installed, and was told to pick it up today." David greeted the worker with a request.

The worker was startled for a moment, not expecting a customer in this hour. Uncertain, he went into the shop and fetched the manager, who came out and greeted David with a polite and stiff bow. "Your motorbike is ready, sir." He took them behind the showroom, where a lone Harley Davison was waiting. Two helmets hung on each handle of the bike.

David had made sure to check that every feature he requested was installed properly and no flawed products had been used in the construction - or at least, as well as he could judge it based on simply looks. Seemingly satisfied with the inspection, he signed the paper the manager offered him, and handed Hikaru one of the helmets with an abscent-minded gesture.

Hikaru picked up the helmet, and put it over her head. Then mounted on the backseat of the motorbike, as David started the engines. One of the mechanics opened the large garage doors for them, and gave them a friendly wave.

David gave a short wave back and placed the helmet over his own head, fastening the strap under his chin. He half-turned to the girl, the smirk barely visible under the helmet's visor: "So. Ever ridden one of these before?"

"A little. I drive one into a lake some years back in Canada. It's a long story. It wasn't a huge one like this though." She leaned forward and peered over his shoulder."You seem to know what you're doing."

"Looks can be decieving. I'd advise you hold on, cause you have more experience than me." The young man laughed, twisting the handles, causing the engine to roar, and the worker to jump aside as the bike zoomed at top speed into a turn, then merging into the street's traffic. It seemed going the speed limit was not on today's agenda, but under the visor, the transfer's face was still unsatisfied, as he took a turn into street that suggested there was an under construction road ahead. Instantaneously, the grin was once more plastered on his face.

Hikaru peeked sideways from his back. She could see the construction signs coming closer and closer. "Uh...David, I think you should turn back." She had a sick feeling in her stomach that the boy would have no such intention.

"Nope~" Was the only answer she got. Her companion seemed to have been in an extremely good mood now, humming something to himself as he drove past honking cars, screaming construction workers, and angry pedestrians. Despite what he had said, it was clear he wasnt going to hit anyone anytime soon, evading the obstacles - evading the large drop ahead, in the unfinished bridge that was supposed to re-direct traffic? that was another matter.

Hikaru gripped the boy tightly. She watched as the bike flew above the street, over the unfinished bridge. She shut her eyes, as a sudden gust of wind blew against her face.

The bike didnt quite go as far as he wanted it, but as far as he expected. The distance, speed required to reach a proper landing spot, the wind factor, the displacement, the harshness of the landing, everything swam through his mind without any effort from him - such was the knowledge he had been given by Alaya, and his own experiences. they had landed atop a rooftop, and without slowing down for a second, had sped off to the next one, the tiles flying from under the motorcycle's wheels. "Having fun yet?" He tossed over his shoulder.

Hikaru felt she was like a top being spun. She couldn't tell where the sky and ground were until the rough landing on the roofs. "I see stars....how could stars appear in broad daylight? Oh...." She said absently.

"I'll take that as a 'yes'." David sped up, considering the next possibility for mischief, which came when the bridge to Miyamachou had entered his sight. Once again, David did not bother with the road, instead taking the narrow pillar that supported the bridge as a road.

Once her stomach settled, and the ride was less bumpy, Hikaru craned her head, watching speckles of sunlight spreading the horizon. It was something new and unexpected, and it took her breath away.

"You seem to have relaxed your grip a bit. Finding the scenery pleasing, then?"

The reply was a dreamy “Mhm...”

It only took a few minutes more for the pair to arrive at the school - at the speed they were going, and the direct nature of their route, the lack of traffic - it all summed up to a very short trip. As he made the bike perform one final jump into the school's yard, in an area where the bushes grew and the windows didnt overlook the place, David finally let the engine die and undid the helmet's strap, removing it, before turning to Hikaru with a smile. "Did you enjoy the trip?" He had hoped she did - that it would partially offset the seemingly bad mood she had been in when she met her relatives. Of course he couldnt read too well into it, but he did feel that there was some awkwardness when she met them, hence the choice of route to school.

Hikaru hopped off the bike, then passed David the helmet. The yard was far quieter than usual, when all student were now in class.

Haegobara Academy: Academy Building: Girl’s locker room

Time: 1000 AM

The hairs behind her neck stood as the magi approached her. Hikaru thought she could take on her, no matter how close she were. Now, she wondered if she been overconfident for letting her target too close, as the girl's fingers traced her collarbone. Maybe Hikaru should have stopped her with conversation when she was only a foot away, instead of putting up a helpless persona to lure her in, but it was too late for regrets now.

She was not scared. The girl Justice was someone hardly enough to be scared about. However, there was something about her which made Hikaru's gut instinct wanting to stay away from her. Her touch seemed to hold another motive, one that is not innocent. She was suddenly reminded of a memory she'd rather she did not recall. Seven years ago, when she had just begun doing real missions for the church, before she had proven herself and became an Executor.

One of her first targets was an old man. It would be too much to call him a magus, because he could barely make a real incantation, but he had enough circuits which he did know to brew some trouble. Hikaru remembered when the church agents cut off her hair and made her look like a boy, and sent her to kill this old man. He had a fondness for little boys for reasons Hikaru did not know until she was much older, and then wished he had not. He did not get close to her like Justice now, but she did get him while turned his back from her and was preoccupied with another boy. He died with a blade on his back that disappeared once breathe his last breath.

Yet, Hikaru could not get his disgusting breathing from her head as Justice breathe into her neck. She finally understood what it would be like being naked skin to skin with a person you do not want to be with.

"I want to mate with you." The other girl whispered in her ear.

Hikaru's fingers twitched and curled into a fist.
