------------------Europa Universalis III: Genoa, The Italian Phoenix----------------- Chapter 1: From Adorno to Doria-Landi Ask any citizen of the Holy Roman Empire what the Republic of Genoa was like and you'd hear the general opinion. The republic's glory days were long past and its rivals, The Hansa and Venice, were filling the gap of trade rather quickly. The republic's main issue in 1399 A.D. was leadership, it had been infected by the same mentality as the rest of the empire. Doge Antonio Adorno, the man in control and therefore the most influential merchant in the Ligurian territory, supported the very policies driving the league into the ground. All it took to oust him from power was the unpopular war against the Kingdom of Urbino as a result of an alliance with the Papacy. The short war resulted in Urbino's annexation by the Pope and riots in Kaffa due to active missionaries trying to drive out the Orthodox heresy. In order to quell the rising anti-Genoese feelings out east Doge Antonio granted voting rights to all property owning Catholics in core lands, this was partly an effort to convert the heretics and heathens in Kaffa and Azow. Genoa (In light yellow) 1399 Despite his modest ability as an administrator (6/9), the weak foreign policies (4/9 diplomacy) and military (3/9) made his opponent in the October 15, 1402 election more favorable. Filippo Doria-Landi d'Este was elected by a landslide of new voters thanks to the previous policies of Antonio Adorno. The night after the election brought a small boost to the economy as a result of many parties throughout the republic but many attributed it to the superior administration powers (7/9) of the new Doge. The new foreign policies (8/9 diplomacy) and military management (6/9) kept the wars at bay, increased the league beyond its previous bounds, and those who left Liguria for Parma's more promising opportunities wished to rejoin the republic. Parma prior to 1406 was in the hands of the powerful and friendly kingdom of Milan who had few allies. Milan's lands generated a vast amount of profit for the trade league so war would be unpopular with the voting merchants if it could not be won quickly; however, in 1406 control of Parma was transferred to Sicily after a peace treaty was signed in Lombardia between the two warring powers. The Doge now saw an opportunity too good to pass up; Sicily was weaker than the republic and it's allies and while it was a member of the trade league a peace agreement could easily force them to rejoin. That summer on August 1 citing claim over the Parma territory out great republic declared war on the Kingdom of Sicily. In response to the new hostilities Sicily, as expected, left the league and immediately began to lobby the Venetian Republic and its Doge for membership of their trade league. The Sicilian diplomats were intercepted by our galleys while trying to cross over to Corfu and were forced to turn back to Palermo, home of the Sicilian court. Following the constant looting of Sicilian lands and waters the Doge allowed the establishment of the National Bank of Saint George on September 1, 1406 in order to regulate the dramatically increased flow of wealth. As the war continued territories fell subject to Genoese occupation and when the comet of January 14, 1407 appeared many thought it to be an omen but Doge Filippo Doria-Landi d'Este ignored the frightened peasants. The relection of Doria-Landi on October 15, 1407 was inevitable after all the war only seemed to boost the economy and create new opportunities for adventure. Sicily was slowly caving, and by September 8, 1408 signed a peace treaty in Palermo to cede the territory of Parma and rejoin the league. Genoa wasn't the only Italian state with an appetite for conquest as Tuscany, an ally of Genoa, declared war on the newly formed Kingdom of Pisa citing rightful claim over its lands. As any ally with nothing to lose the Doge accepted the call for aid from the Tuscan Prince on September 29, 1408. With the coming of October came the sighting of another comet on the fifth which was declared an ill omen by the Doge. Perhaps this was indeed an omen for two days later rebels took up arms under the leadership of Giovanni Davide de Mari in Azow; the rebels claimed that the latest reforms of the government (+1 centralization) were unjust and that the villain de Mari would be better suited as Doge. The location of the revolt helped contain it in a far, remote corner of the republic, unfortunately this worked in their favor as the revolt couldn't been put down without difficulty. On October 28, 1409 Tuscany annexed Pisa, allowing the full attention of military to be directed toward Azow and its rebellion. The following year saw the end of de Mari's revolt and the embargo by Venice of all Genoese trade. It would seem that the comet of 1409 was indeed a foreboding portent as the Novgorodian Republic and The Hansa embargoed our trade in 1411, this brought an expansion of our trade to a new low as our merchants were now forbidden from trading in the wealthiest of places. A month after the new embargoes were imposed Filippo Doria-Landi d'Este was reelected in what some would call a rigged election. This next term was largely spent on massing wealth and power and an alliance with Hungary was formed. Genoa 1409 Shortly before the alliance was finalized the Austrian-Ottoman war broke out dragging Hungary into the conflict on the Austrian side. With an ally at war with the Turks the republic declared war on April 1, 1419 intervening on behalf of our ally Hungary. The first maneuver practically decided the war, a blockade of all Ottoman traffic between Europe and Asia was imposed and troops deployed to the undefended Asia Minor coast. This resulted in the complete occupation of Asia Minor by Genoese troops on June 26, 1422 and forced the Turkish Sultan to met with Doge Filippo Doria-Landi d'Este for peace. The terms that were agreed upon go as follows: The Kingdoms of Bosnia and Serbia are to be released from their vassal state into complete independence from the Ottoman Sultanate, the Ottoman Sultanate will join the Genoese Trade League directing merchants and flow of goods to the corresponding centers of trade, and the Kingdoms of Bulgaria and Trebizond will be formally recognized as independent entities to which the Ottoman Sultanate shall have no claim over. While this event was highly celebrated greater achievements were still to come and on October 21, 1422 the Doge declared war on the Republic of Venice to assist the on going Hungarian invasion. Genoese Occupation of Asia Minor 1422 Genoa Post-War 1422 In the fall of 1423 the election for doge came about and to no ones surprise Doge Filippo Doria-Landi d'Este was once again reelected, the Genoese people love those who bring victory over those who would think themselves as superior. Unfortunatly for Venice, Genoa has recovered from their crushing defeat 43 years ago at Chioggia, this time the city built over a sewer water would fall to The Most Serene Republic of Genoa. The battle at Chioggia in 1380 had seen some of the earliest use of cannons on board ships; the crafty Venetian foxes trapped the besieging Genoese fleet turning them into the besieged. The fleet this time was more than a poorly lead alliance of galleys, this time the republic constructed four new carracks armed with the latest cannons. The fleet landed troops on lands allied to Venetian coin and within two years both Crete and Naxos submitted to vassalage under Genoa. With her holdings beyond the Adriatic lost and a superior fleet moving closer to the namesake city Venice agreed to sign peace and ceded the island of Corfu to Doge Filippo Doria-Landi d'Este on February 2, 1426. A victory before an election always resulted in reelection as Doria-Landi found out time and time again, and so on October 15, 1427 he was reelected. Over twenty years in office and the republic was thriving, the dreaded Ottoman Turks had been humbled but not broken, to Byzantium's dismay which after losing Morea and Thrace retreated to Athens only to fall completely. The Ottomans bitter about their defeat in 1422 declared war on Bulgaria and although the same plan as before was executed Bulgaria was forced to agree to peace on Turkish terms, ceding 3/4s of all their land. The peace agreement between Genoa and Istanbul were to rejoin the Genoese trade league and make a large payment of ducats to pay for the war's expenditures. This all lead to the reelection in 1431 of Filippo Doria-Landi d'Este. Upon hearing of Genoa's grand success the tartar people of Cherkassk appealed to the republic for inclusion to the grand scheme of things. Now with a new cause to champion Doge Filippo Doria-Landi d'Este, that name has many young school children of the future groaning no doubt, declared war on the Golden Horde on November 13, 1434 to claim the territory of Cherkassk as part of the republic. The war slowly shifted into Genoa's favor by employing many, many spies to support as many pretenders to the child Khan's throne as possible. Before the war concluded the Filippo Doria-Landi d'Este announced his retirement from politics in 1435 leading to a close election of Pietro Adorno d'Este as Doge on October 14, 1435.
