November 19th, 1974 Akiyama Apartments, Room 205. Time: 1415 GMT+9 Rurouni Kenshin OST 1 - Demo ne! Honto wa ne!.... - Noriyuki Asakura Bringing Hikaru back had been a simple enough task, though people did pay him a few odd glances when he walked the streets; these glares, however, little concerned David, who simply continued on his way, this time merely humming to himself instead of his usual whistling - he didnt want to wake up the girl he carried. After arriving at the house, he carefully placed her on the floor, removing a futon from the closet and placing it upon the floor, then her atop it. Finding a pillow, he placed that under her head, and, finally, fetching a blanket, covered her with it. He had time to go and make a cup of tea, finish it while sitting beside her, wash it, and then return, an odd look not usual to David entering his eyes when he looked at his sleeping Master. For once, he had let the mask of the usual mocking nature drop, and truly considered the consequences and events that had occurred this day - and would occur from now on. This girl would from now on be in the middle of it all... Engrossed in his thought, he saw the girl move several times, some sort of odd expression on her face; as he leaned in closer, slightly concerned, he received a pillow in his face. Not making any effort to dodge, he merely let it hit him, and as it fell away, his face returned to the same old expression she had been used to seeing, as if the childish prank she played returned him to his old self. "So this is what I get for putting you to sleep comfortably, huh, Princess?" "Don't. Wake. Me. Up. Right in the middle of a cliffhanger! If you're inducing dreams, at least let it finish before anything else!" "Right, moving boxes. I'll leave you to that. Nice to have someone taking care of the boring stuff." She got up, unzipped a familiar suitcase and took some clothes. Just then, there was a knock on the door with Mrs Akiyama's voice coming through. "Hikaru, have you come back from school?" Hikaru mouthed 'Get the door' at David, before disappearing into the bathroom. Shaking his head, David stood up and walked over to the door, his steps light and almost inaudible. grasping the doorknob, he turned it and pulled the door forwards, looking at the elderly woman who'd stood in the doorway. Smiling, he answered her question: "We've just returned, yes. Hikaru felt some particularly strong smell and reacted to it by fainting. I took that as a cue to carry her home - I think she went to shower now." “Oh, what could have possibly caused it?" Akiyama Kaoru was a woman in her early fifties, petite and polite. Her face barely showed her age until she frowned, as she did when she heard the news. She closed the door behind her and asked. "Was it an attempt or any of the like?" David's brow furrowed as he contemplated this for a second, finally he shook his head: "I doubt it. The one who caused it made his own companion drink that brew the stench of which made her faint, and frankly, he didn’t look the type to be into covert tactics like that." He shrugged: "Can’t say this day was uneventful in any way shape or form so far however... there was already a clash at the school - and I had to stop her from jumping down a hole to see what was on the bottom after they left." David sighed exasperatedly, rubbing his temples, finally looking up, smiling, and crossing his arms on his chest: "Well, at least she appreciates good food. The thing I found her regular diet consisted of, I really wonder how she's still alive." The middle-age woman smiled as soon as she heard nothing serious had happened to the child. "Her diet is one of the strangest things I've seen. I never knew where she got it from. Still, I did my best to give as much normal food as possible. " Then she grew uncomfortable, glanced at the way of the running water. Her started off with signs of hesitance, unsure of if it would be wise to speak more than she should, but if this man were Hikaru’s guardian for the task she had been set, perhaps it would be wiser for him to know things that wouldn’t leave the girl’s lips. "She has always been an impulsive one. I think my daughter, Makina, had some influence to that . They were great friends, and had been inseparable for years.” She paused, struggling for words. The next sentence was difficult for her utter. “Makina died three months ago. Nothing much has changed of Hikaru's general personality as far as I could see, but I fear she might be more rash than the usual." "I... See." The Servant nodded thoughtfully, with an air of something that didn’t enter his voice when he'd been in Hikaru's presence. "That explains some of today's events." Many things had been going through his mind right now - he had really understood some of the reactions, the facial expressions that the girl bore... Still. His job remained the same... Right? "I will see what I can do, Mrs. Akiyama. After all, it is my job, and besides..." He smiled earnestly for the first time: "I already told her, but I like taking care of small things, and she had been the smallest I've seen in my long life." Mrs.Akiyama let out a breath. "I'm glad to see that you're a level-headed companion. Please take good care of her.” She casted her glance aside. Her thoughts simmered to the surface. “ She shouldn't be in this in the first place! We don't mix ourselves with this heathen war. She's not one of them. I told the people from Rome. Yet, those marks came to her nonetheless." While Kaoru managed contained her voice, her frustration was etched visibly over her face. Suddenly, she seemed several years older. "Thank you for your compliment... And your concern towards Hikaru. You are, of course, right. She should not have been involved in this, but no matter if this is God's Will or the devil's trickery, I can only do one thing: Stay by her side though it." David turned slightly from the elderly woman, walking towards the window, and, opening it, breathed in the fresh air outside. As he slid it closed, he turned back towards her: "I've fought in wars ever since I've been her age... It isnt anything new to me, but I still feel there is something strange this time." His eyes shut for a second, as the boy exhaled, almost sighing: "Nevertheless... You do not need to be concerned, grateful though I am for it. I will protect her to the best of my ability." "Thank you." Mrs Akiyama's head bowed slightly. She dabbed the inner corner of her eye, and returned to her leveled composure once more, just before the sound of a lock unlatched came from the bathroom. "I pray that God will be watching you both." Out of the bathroom door, Hikaru emerged wearing a new set of clothes and slightly damp hair hanging over her forehead. "Sorry for the wait, Baa-chan." She rubbed the towel into her head furiously. "It's nothing, dear. I’m here to tell you that Father Marrone has returned from his trip." Mrs Akiyama gestured at the packed boxes around her. “You've been busy, from what I've seen.” "Oh, that's not me. That's all this guy's work." Hikaru launched a tackle on David's shoulders. "Oof." David made a fake grunt, then patting the girl on the head. "Yes, as you can see, Mrs. Akiyama, we cannot stay here. The strategic position is lacking, and I'd really rather not inconvenience you by involving you in this war - I am certain Hikaru agrees with me on that. Funny, really..." He smiled briefly, but sincerely, while taking a look around the apartment: "Never thought I'd be called upon to be a pack mule." "Had I ever told you to pack?” Hikaru stared into the space above her to recall. “Nope, can't remember. That makes you a self-made mule, sir." She ended with a jabbed finger on the side of David's head. "Oh, you you'd rather I leave all this behind huh? Half those boxes contain your precious plushies you know." He swept his hand in a broad gesture, taking on a look of insulted good will. "I am perfectly fine travelling with just the clothes on my back." Hikaru frowned, stared into his eyes and shook her finger warningly. "Don't even think about dumping my plushies. My plushies are much, much better than the Crowned Jewels of England. Besides," she said on a higher note and tugged the brown uniform. "-these aren't yours, they're Kyouya's and they're one size smaller on you." David smacked his forehead. "Ah, my bad. Let me correct that to 'I am perfectly fine travelling without these rags on my back'." he shrugged imperiously with his eyes shut to showcase just how unconcerned he had been over such little things. "He can have these back anytime he wants. I absolutely detest them." "Well, as soon as we get something that fits." Hikaru said, without a slightest incentive to defend her neighbors’ well-cared blazer, shirt and trousers, now stretched on the verge of being torn apart. The sound of engine and wheels entered the courtyard a storey below. "I think that's our movers. I guess this is goodbye, Baa-chan." There was a hint of reluctance in her last sentence. Full Metal Alchemst OST 1 - Beaming Sunlight "Guess that's my cue, then." David picked up a stack of boxes and walked out the door, shutting it behind him. Outside, conversation could be heard as he spoke to the driver of the truck, but no words could be made out. As the chat continued, Hikaru and the landlady were left to themselves - he understood the pair had some things to say without his presence. He was her Servant... But he was an outsider. There was a silence after the blond boy left. Hikaru casted her eyes downwards and stared at the empty space a foot from her. Then, she felt her palm on her head. Unlike David's teasing pats, this was gentle, very much like what a mother would do to her own child. "You have grown." the old lady stated, as if she hadn't noticed the fact until just now. “Baa-chan, I'm sorry." Hikaru still hung her head, moving away from under the palm. Kaoru's eyes widened slightly at the unexpected apology, then understanding what the girl meant, she moved forward and pulled the girl into her arms. "It wasn't your fault, Hikaru. With what you and Makina were doing, things like this do happen." "It's not only that, all this 'war' mess that has brought here. David's right, we have to leave." “I don't blame you for anything. You'd think I would have let those people accuse you every way they want? Don’t throw yourself away like this.” Kaoru tried her best to quell the girl. She hugged Hikaru tightly, fearing that if she let her go, it would be the last time she’d ever see her again. “Think of Makina: It would be the last thing she wanted you to do. And your mother…no matter where she is, she wouldn’t want you to sacrifice yourself for nothing.” It was a plea, more than an advice. If Hikaru did take it to heart, she did not show. Her expression remained just as hard and stubborn. The girl released herself from Kaoru’s arms and pressed her lips together in silence. She strode over to the window and watched David herding the movers to organize the boxes in the order he wanted . "I should go." She took her last remaining bag, with one lingering look back at empty flat she grew up in, and the woman whom she thought of as her foster mother.
