It had been after club activities in the afternoon, when Hikaru rummaged through the shelves of the closing school library. She searched through the titles in the history and mythology section with fire lit in her eyes, as if she were anticipating the figures she flipped through the pages to jump to life. The librarians paid no attention to her being the last person wandering between the bookcases. It was impossible to usher the dark-blue haired girl out of the library while she was looking for books, like a hound chasing after a rabbit. But even seemingly immersed in her hunt, she had been able to time herself to check out her books right before the library actually closes. So the librarians knew her well enough to leave her to her own devices.

Today, she had cleared nearly all of the new mythology books that had recently been donated by one of the school PTA board members. These were recently released books translated from English to Japanese, very detailed ones, that would be hard to find in a not-very-well-known city like Fuyuki. Hikaru never thought Fuyuki as a city, being born in Tokyo. Her first impression of Fuyuki was more of a town, but that was years ago before they built the shopping centers in Shinto. Still, first impressions always stuck, and Fuyuki is still rather slow in trends and getting new stuff. Cold and almost unchanging, like its weather.

Satisfied by the pile she had accumulated, Hikaru put it forward on the counter desk, where the librarian in charge had been mysteriously absent.

"Whoa!" she cried out as she accidentally flipped the stack on the opposite end. "Sorry!" she apologized to the books. "I'm so sorry. Should have been more careful."

Justice feels one of the books hit her leg and then land on the floor with a smack. She turned to her right and saw a smaller blue-black haired girl scrambling to straighten the book stack. Justice bent down to pick up the book amidst apologies and picked it up before the girl could reach it handing it to her. "Do not feel so bad. I just tripped not to long ago sending a stack of things all over the place." Justice said as she smiled unconsciously at the girl.

Hikaru bended over the table wincing, trying to reach for one book that had dropped on the other side of the counter. “Come -here!” she said sternly at it as she struggled.

Justice leaned over the counter and picked up the book that had conveniently landed on one of the chairs and handed it to the girl. But for a moment did not tell her she had it and looked at the long black hair that slid down the other girls back. "Y-your book kohai."

Kohai? She rolled her eyes and turned towards the newcomer. It was a common misconception for most people that Hikaru belonged to the lower years, due to her appearance of being short and child-like face, and that she had skipped a year, she was rarely taken as a third year.

"Oh, thank you, thank you very much." Hikaru accepted the book with one hand, while straightening her glasses with the other. "A-are y-you waiting for the counter girl too?" asked she in a stutter to give of the impression of a mere shy, bookish girl.

"It is my fault she left unfortunately. Young first years are so impressionable. Oh, did I say that? It seems I've said too much, Hahaha..." Justice blushed and looked away apparently embarrassed by her statement.

"Um, I suppose they are." Hikaru said in a low voice, unsure if it was the right thing to reply.

Justice took off her glasses while looking down at the girl. “Take your glasses off please.”

"Wha? Why?" Hikaru blinked in bewilderment. The request came sudden and strange to her.

"I'd like to see the face of someone when I meet them for the first time if I can." she smiled slightly.

"Um...okay." Thinking that there was no harm, Hikaru complied, if only slow and hesitantly. Something off went through her stomach.

Justice stood there now able to see the girls face for the first time, blue-black orbs peered back innocently into her reddish ones. "How rude of me. I haven't told you my name ... Justice von Arngholz." Justice said as she found herself unable to look away from the girls eyes.

"Justice von Arngholz? Are you from Germany, Arngholz-san? Oh, my name is Miyamoto Hikaru, by the way" Hikaru returned the introduction automatically, while her mind spin. Germany and red eyes. It reminded her of something, a certain characteristic a type of people shared, which in turn reminded her that she had to go home immediately.

"My mother was Japanese, so yes. Hikaru is it? Oh! Forgive me! Even three years later I forget my manners, Miyamoto-san..." Justice finds herself unable to move as she continued to look at the girl.

"Is-is there something on my face?" Hikaru waved her finger around herself, feeling uneasy with the girl's intensive attention on her.

"Oh? Of course not, in fact it's perfect." Justice continues to drift off into thoughts of the girl in front of her."

"Um, okay." she nodded slightly.

Justice blinked. "Did I drift off again? Hahaha. I am very sorry Miyamoto-san. It seems that you are a very beautiful girl. I'm just a bit jealous. I wish I could have such pretty black hair." said she with a smile.

"Uh..." Hikaru turned away, pretending to be preoccupied in organizing her books. "I don't think I'm beautiful. Not in the same way as you, Arngholz-san. I'm just a short girl with normal face."

“I am exotic, but not in a good way. I don't think anyone has called me beautiful.” Justice looked away blushing.

"Sorry, did I offend you? I always say the wrong thing, it's a horrible habit of mine."

“Oh .. no. It's just." She looked at Hikaru softly as if wanting to reach across the distance and touch her. She whispered. "If only you were mine."

"Pardon?" Hikaru blinked.

Justice flushed as she gasped. "Did you hear what I said?" She blushed as she covers her face with her hands.

"No...I didn't get that." She lied. Hikaru's sensitive ears did pick up the string of words, just as easily as she had hearing the footsteps on the hallways outside. But the meaning of it was simply so extraordinary, that she simply filed it away as a misunderstanding.

The taller girl sighed, relaxing her shoulders. "Thank goodness. It was something that was very unlike me. I would have been eternally embarrassed if you had heard it." She pulled her handkerchief from her pocket and begins to impulsively clean her glasses. "Say, Miyamoto-san, what are you doing this afternoon?"

"Uh...I have an appointment with someone. Why?"

"I feel horrible with my behavior. I was wondering if you would accept my apology over tea, or perhaps even cake. I have a little money left over from lunch. There's a place in town that has really good cheesecake."

"Maybe some other time. Thank you for the offer though, no one ever asks me out." She managed to muster a small grin. Cheesecake was not on Hikaru's list of favourite food. She in fact hated it.

"You've never been on a date? I know how that feels, no one ever asks me either." she smiled slightly as she sees the girl returning with someone wrapped in a flowery handkerchief. "These girls keep giving me cakes and candies and I won't be able to keep my form." Justice frowned slightly and was glad that the girl was still out of earshot.

"It's nice that everyone likes you." Hikaru simply remarked, seething her own venom. The more the girl talked, less she like her. That braided hair around her neck, the pen stuck behind her ear, and the way she clutched her notes, it seemed as if she were office worker that had walked out of a sitcom, in a school uniform; all fake and unconvincing.

"People just like to be praised. It's amazing how much a person lights up when you tell them that you notice them. I really don't understand it all myself. But apparently the underclassmen think I'm 'cool'. Truth is, I'm just a klutz."

Insincere praises, I bet. Just to make them shower you with their affection. Hikaru thought sarcastically, but said something else all together.

"I don't think so. You can't imagine the things I do all the time, I keep getting scolded over and over. Used to it by now, though." Hikaru gave a wry chuckle, as she played with Justice a ping pong of self-depreciation. She wondered how far this 'Justice' would drag herself down.

"You get scolded? I would find it very difficult to scold you. Because you are so honest with what your doing that sometimes it is too much and it comes out as clumsiness. You get so focused on what you are doing. I saw your face while you were fixing that stack. It's too cute." She giggled slightly.

Hikaru stole a glance on her watch. "Um...I need to go. Hopefully we'll see each other again sometime, Arngholz-san." said she with a stiff smile, and regretted a little in spouting off the last bit.

"I would hope so Miyamoto-san." Justice smiled slightly.

The librarian first-year arrived apologizing to Hikaru profusely and quickly checked out her books. Hikaru loaded them one by one into her bag, pausing for a moment to dust the book Justice had picked, while stealing a glance at her every now and then. Why is she still watching Hikaru so intently? She waved at the two goodbye, before scrambling out of the library in a rush, not wanting to be in the same room as the girl any longer. She has a far more urgent task to deal with than getting into a squabble with an egoistical third year, whom she did not know.
