Prana is the power source used to actualize the mysteries of Magic. Prana cannot exist independently, so is always bound to some sort of recipient and it cannot do anything by itself. For that reason the magi use it mostly by imbedding into an object or as a catalyst to initiate nature interference Magic. Only exceptions to said rule are the Holy Grail of the Einzbern and devils, who recreate miracles by just releasing energy. Divided into two types: * Mana is the energy existing in the atmosphere. Produced by the world itself, although usually found in great quantities once used up it will take time to be replenished. * Od is the energy found within living organisms, life force so to say. Once depleted, the Magic Circuits will recover it. Source of the name probably comes from Odic force. The only real difference between the two types is their abundance: mana can be found almost anywhere in great quantities, thus is called Greater Source by the magi. Comparatively, the energy inside humans is much smaller in amount, therefore received the name of Lesser Source. Strictly speaking mana and od is the energy in its raw state, while prana is the name given to it once it is converted by the Magic Circuits. Mana can be taken in accordingly with the capacities of the Magic Circuits, but the actual conversion process will take time. Regarding nature interference Magic mentioned before, at least for those of large-scale, activation requires the use of mana regardless of the amount of od that the magus has. In fact, is common practice among the magi to start up their spells with od and then keep them running with mana. Only small-scale spells that do not interact with the environment directly are performed entirely with od, an example of which would be Reinforcement. Prana do not has any elemental attribute. However, once imbedded into an object that does have said attribute (such as jewels) or that is under the influence of nature spirits, it will tune itself in accordance with the element in question until the moment that is released. Note: Unit calculation is Circuitsx5. Od levels by characters * Average matured magus: 25 units of prana * Ciel: 100 times the amount of a magus. Exact number is uncertain due to differences in the standards of the sources in question, but she is definitely on Servant-level. * Emiya Shirou: 20~30 units of prana * Matou Sakura: Normally, she should have about the same amount as Rin, but the Worms in her body are constantly consuming her energy. When connected to the Holy Grail and Angra Mainyu, the energy inside her body is equivalent to 1,000,000,000,000 units of prana, already on the level of a Counter Guardian. * Rider’s Pegasus: 100 times the amount of a magus. About the same as Ciel. * Saber (with Shirou as Master): 1200~1300 units of prana * Tohsaka Rin: 20 times the amount of an average matured magus, so about 500 units of prana. To clarify, Od is the energy used for most of the spells I've seen people submit so far. Mana would only be used for very large-scale things, like a large Bounded Field, or maybe even a Reality Marble. Unless a GM tells you specifically, assume that you're using Od to power your spells. Note, Od is also what can be drained from people by Servants to replenish their own Prana, as well as what is drained from certain, more evil, spells. Od takes much, much less time to alter so that it can be absorbed by a magus' circuits, which makes it more efficient then waiting to recharge from the natural mana in the atmosphere.
