So, this weeks thread is prompted by the massive oil problem in the Gulf of Mexico. (http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2010/04/26/AR2010042604308.html) So what basically happened is an underwater oil pump malfunctioned and there are now massive ecological issues, with 200,000 liters of oil coming out a day. There's currently 3 leaks, and we are trying to close just one at the moment.

So the issue is whether we should continue to use Oil and it's side effect, switch to new methods, or something else.

Personally I am hoping we switch more to nuclear power, and quickly, as it is very ecologically efficient with few drawbacks. It is actually quite safe, with only 2 REMs of radiation a year to local populace (coal plant in 3) and Chernobyl, the only real big issue, was unsafe by 1986 Soviet standards. And about the radiation, we're working on that too. (http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2010/01/100126175823.htm)

Perhaps then we should discuss the ecological effects of the disaster, and thus the ramifications for future oil plans?

it would be intresting to see what we could accomplish if we were to harness the energy of dark matter. it's possible to make, we just don't know how to use it yet.
