Ayane Isuzu walked into the arcade this day on a mission. Not a mission like her normal ventures into this cacophony of video gaming history, nay... today, her mission was different. Besides, she didn't have a whole bunch of free cash to fulfill her desires for this place. Which was exactly why she was here. Walking to the back of the arcade, where she and her friends had been escorted once, she knocked on the door to Nickle's office then stepped back and waited to be addressed. With any luck, he was in the office and not on lunch or something. She didn't really know his schedule or how he ran the arcade, after all... she just played games. If she wanted to play games for the next month, though, she'd need an alternate source of income. And what better way to solve that dilemma than to work for the arcade? Only one way to find out! |

Nickle however wasn't in his office. Rather he had been underneath one of the counters up front, re-tweaking some of the wiring so that the work station was a little more work friendly. At any rate, the arcade had really grown in popularity and with plans already underway for THAT little surprise that Nickle had been planning. With a sigh of relief, Nickle slid out from the counter and moved back towards his office. His v-piece flashed a reminder that he still needed to finish off that month's income and send some money from the bank to pay for the arcade's expenses. However as Nickle approached his office, he spotted someone standing outside it. Was this girl looking for him? "Can I help you miss?" asked Nickle, a small smile creeping onto his face. Was she having a problem with the game she had been playing? The maintinence check had just been done last weekend so everything should be okay. |

Ayane blinked as she heard the voice she was expecting...but not from behind a door. Turning, she looked up to see Nickle's familiar face, with the ever-present...whatever that thing was he was wearing. It looked like a scouter, but... "Nickle--" she started, but then suddenly stopped with a rather awkward look on her face. All of a sudden, she wasn't quite sure how to start this sentence. What would be a polite way to do it? What would be the way with the highest success rate? She'd...never been job-hunting. So she settled on the direct approach. "--I want to work here. Could you use a hand?" |

Ah, so it was dear little Ayane-san that was wanting to speak to Nickle. As she spoke his name, Nickle raised his eyebrow. She had sounded pretty confident, but now she looked rather lost. Was she trying to figure out how to put the subject delicately? Nickle smiled as he, placing a hand on his hip and looking at her. "--I want to work here. Could you use a hand?" Ah, there it was. When uncertainty strikes, it's always best to get down the heart of the matter and avoid the chitchat. Nickle smiled even more now. "Well, Ayane, first let me say that I'm flattered by your request." Nickle moved around Ayane and moved to open his office door. It opened easily and he stepped inside. "Come inside and we can discuss your proposition." |

Nickle smiled and put a single hand onto his hip while he waited for her to out with it, and when she did, he smiled even more brightly. "Well, Ayane, first let me say that I'm flattered by your request," he started, then turned and pushed the door open past her and walked inside. "Come inside and we can discuss your proposition." Proposition? Now that she thought about it, she merely came here looking for a job of some sort, because the arcade was one place in Hyakuji where she didn't feel stressed out. She couldn't see herself working in a restaurant or store, but attending to the arcade? That would work... ...but doing what? She hadn't given it much more thought beyond that. Still, stepping inside and closing the door behind her, she waited to be told to sit by standing behind one of the chairs in front of Nickle's desk. That was proper procedure, right? As for her proposition, she would handle it by changing the angle a bit. "You don't seem against it, so what do you have in mind?" she asked. May as well find out what it meant to work for the Abenobashi Arcade. |

Nickle smiled, she was really eager to get a job here from the look of things. As she sat, Nickle leaned forward onto his desk and laced his fingers together, resting his elbows on top of his desk and in turn, placing his head on them. "Well you're correct in me having nothing against the idea of you working here. But there are certain prerequisites I need to observe before I can fully say you can work here." Nickle leaned back now, "I need to know, how good are you with mechanical devices? You have to understand that the Virtual Reality systems I have here are constantly being updated and upgraded. You need to at least be able to handle a screw-driver so that you can help me and the others with the maintinence" Now Nickle became a little more serious, losing his smile slightly. Such a momentus occasion only happened when Nickle was talking business. "I need to know whether I need to show how to do that, before I let you loose in the store." |

Ayane sat as Nickle folded his hands together on the desk, leaning into them with his head. She was sure she'd seen that particular seating position somewhere before... but couldn't quite place it. "Well you're correct in me having nothing against the idea of you working here. But there are certain prerequisites I need to observe before I can fully say you can work here," he started, then leaned back. "I need to know, how good are you with mechanical devices? You have to understand that the Virtual Reality systems I have here are constantly being updated and upgraded. You need to at least be able to handle a screw-driver so that you can help me and the others with the maintinence." Before she could respond to that, though, his smile faded and for once he looked like he really meant business. It sent an uneasy chill down her spine, seeing him focus on her that much. "I need to know whether I need to show you how to do that, before I let you loose in the store." Pausing for only a moment to collect her thoughts--and herself--she replied. "If it's electronic, I can usually figure it out... and I can do basic repairs. I've fixed my laptop before, and tinker a bit with other devices. If handling a screwdriver is the only requisite for working here, I think I'm overqualified." |

And then, the flood gates of happy sugary bliss opened. "Well then we don't need to worry about the formalities!" said Nickle excitedly. "At least I don't need to train you to be a grease monkey. Now all that's left is the entrance exam!" Nickle's smile beamed at her brightly, before he reachd inside one of his desk draws. From it, he pulled out a v-piece, very much like his own, except this one was green like the other employees. Sliding it over to Ayane, he spoke once more. "I need to see you in action, to determine how well you'll be able to work under preassure. This v-piece allows my employees to manage the security cameras, LAN and network connections as well as observing each player who is plaugged into a VR Pod, making sure their vital signs are normal and regular. That and it alerts to whenever someone is trying to tip over the token machines to get some freebies." Nickle then picked himself up and moved to the door, opening it and standing there looking back and waiting for Ayane to follow. "Come on, the exam starts now." A rather menacing and mad-scientist like grin came over Nickle for a moment. But then again, Nickle always loved what came next. |

It was somewhat too bad that Ayane had sat down; she wasn't even in the seat for very long when Nickle's enthusiasm had her on her feet once more. His face was practically glowing, the grin across his face stretching his skin to nearly the point of looking...insane. "Well then we don't need to worry about the formalities! At least I don't need to train you to be a grease monkey. Now all that's left is the entrance exam!" "Entrance...exam?" Ayane wondered aloud as he extracted one of the scouter-like devices from his desk and pushed it to her. As she placed it over her ear and adjusted it for proper fitting, he continued with his explanation. "I need to see you in action, to determine how well you'll be able to work under preassure. This v-piece allows my employees to manage the security cameras, LAN and network connections as well as observing each player who is plaugged into a VR Pod, making sure their vital signs are normal and regular. That and it alerts to whenever someone is trying to tip over the token machines to get some freebies." He didn't wait long after explaining it, either; his whole body seemed incapable of staying still, even as he was finishing he was already up and moving to the door, ushering her out as she finished adjusting the V-Piece. "Come on, the exam starts now." Ayane couldn't say she was comfortable with the rather wild look on his face, but... if this was what it took to get a job, she'd definitely do her best. Stepping back out into the arcade, she wasn't sure what exactly was in store for her... |

As Ayane stepped outside, Nickle closed the door behind her and began to make his way towards the VR Pod room. As he walked, he passed one of his employees and called out to her, "Sakarako! I want you to execute procedure 510 and have two of my private pods activated immediately." Sakarako, who had been busy handing some tokens to a few little kids, quickly finished counting them out before moving to follow Nickle and Ayane. "Ryuko-sama, does that mean you want me to activate the big screen feeds as well?" Nickle grinned, no more so mad looking, but now just excited, "Of course it does! Not only will the publicity be good for the arcade, but it will cause Ayane-san to perform better knowing she is being watched." Sakarako parted from them and not soon after, Nickle reached a door. "Identification code, Nickle Ryuko, 0017, respond." It would appear, for Ayane at least, that the v-piece was also capable of recieving voice commands. A few seconds later a robatic voice replied, "Voice match, access granted." The door slid open, the sound of hydraulics and pressure controls was clearly heard. Ayane was being given a look into something nearly no one had seen. Nickle's private game room. As Nickle made his way inside, he indicated for Ayane to lie down in one of virtual reality pods. "This may feel a little weird. You're subconscious is about to be plugged into the system. This thing is going to show me how you cope with stress. Don't worry though, when it's done, you'll probably feel like you've just had a nice nap." Nickle in turn, lay down in a different pod nearby. "Just relax, Sakarako will have everything under control. If anything goes wrong, the v-piece will jack you out." |

Ayane was led to a part of the arcade she'd never been to--though to be fair, she spent most of her time at the Gundam pods--as Nickle asked his assistant to prepare...something. Something about a personal-use VR pod. The somewhat initially disconcerting bit was that with the V-Piece seemed linked to all the systems in the arcade, in that she could hear everything that was going on through one ear. Having never worn something like it, it took getting used to. And then it opened. A door to a room with a strange set of pods, ones where you didn't sit and operate controls... in fact, it looked like you had to lay down in them. And where were the controls, anyway? Nickle confirmed that they were for laying down, then answered her unspoken question about the pods' control scheme. "This may feel a little weird. You're subconscious is about to be plugged into the system. This thing is going to show me how you cope with stress. Don't worry though, when it's done, you'll probably feel like you've just had a nice nap." Well... it was his system, and if the Gundam games were any indication, he knew what he was doing. But this... neuro-immersive simulation? Did this...even exist yet? Was this real? She couldn't supress the grin on her face as her mind was filled with enthusiasm. Testing technology that doesn't even exist yet... as part of a job requirement!? This is... more amazing than I expected...! she thought to herself as she laid down in the pod, waiting for whatever was about to happen to begin. "Just relax, Sakarako will have everything under control. If anything goes wrong, the v-piece will jack you out," came Nickle's voice in her ear. "Roger that," she said, already in the mood for a game. With any luck, it would be a mecha simulation... |

Nickle lowered his head and closed his eyes. Slowly the glass screen covering the pod began to close over him, the glass becoming tinted. Ayane's pod was doing the same, slowly enclosing her. The pods had oxygen vents, so it wasn't like either of them were going to suffocate. Nickle just hoped Ayane wasn't going to panic. "Sakarako, commence load-up program. I'll take my usual choice of attire and mobile suit." "Roger that Ryuko-sama, uploading the Void's data now." What followed was normal for Nickle, but it may feel a bit odd for Ayane. She would hear several small clicks as some jacks plugged into the back of her v-piece. Sakarako's voice was then heard over the speaker in the v-piece, "Just relax, this may feel a little weird for a first timer, but I promise, it causes no long term damage. Ryuko-sama made sure of that before he let any of us use it." As the communications channel was cut out, Ayane would begin to hear a low ringing sound, like a mosquito buzzing around. However, it was getting louder and had a higher pitch with each passing second. Then, it sounded as if a choir of banshee's was screaming, but before Ayane would be able to react, she'd find she was no longer inside the pod. The soundwaves had knocked her out and now the data o the game was being transmitted to her subconscious via various waves on different frequencies. This was the reason Nickle had accepted to promote the VR Pods he had received from Engage Inc. They were just too cutting edge! At any rate, Ayane was no floating in what seemed to be a glass sphere, with purple bubbles and water moving on the outside. At different parts of the sphere however, she would notice three small panels. Above one, the words "Pilot" were written, above another "Suit" and finally a panel with the words saying "Join". "This is your custimization screen." Another panel screen began to digitize, with Sakarako's face being on it. "Hey there. So what do you think?" said the employee as she watched Ayane on the exterior control panel screen. |

The eagerness to try this surreal technology did keep her from panicking about the claustrophobic space of the closed pod, but once her V-Piece clicked in with the pod's electronics, her grin faded a bit. "Just relax, this may feel a little weird for a first timer, but I promise, it causes no long term damage. Ryuko-sama made sure of that before he let any of us use it." "Do you always call him -sam--" she began to ask, but the channel had already been cut. In place of any voice was a strange... ringing. A high pitch, like someone had left a television on in another room nearby. Then it was closer--no, louder. It was no longer on the level of annoying, it was downright obnoxious. Painful--! Then silence. The pod was gone. She wasn't laying down, and she didn't have any headgear on. Her body felt normal enough... but these weren't the clothes she'd had on earlier. In fact... despite some random floating code censoring her sensitive spots from view, she was quite naked. Was this...her subconscious? AND WHY WAS SHE NAKED!? There wasn't time to contemplate the metaphysical; the game was beginning! Her little virtual sphere had control panels, selection screens for the game in question. A quick glance revealed settings for "Pilot," "Suit," and "Join." Suit? As in, Mobile Suit? Gundam!? Before Sakarako had even come onto the viewscreen Ayane had punched the Suit selection button, discovering with a combination of relief and joy that it was indeed referring to Mobile Suits. Though the roster was made up of entirely Cosmic Era... She got so into it, her nakedness didn't even register. "This is your customization screen," Sakarako said, her face appearing on one of the side monitors within her bubble. "Hey there. So what do you think?" "It's...amazing," Ayane said, still pressing at some of the keys to see what the game was capable of. "I can't believe this actually exists. I'm... shocked." Then she turned, glancing at the video feed from Sakarako and flashing a smile. "I'm impressed." Turning her attention back to her selections, it was time to get down to business. Her opponent's selections were apparently only revealed on the battlefield, unlike the Gundam pods from outside. And all the suits were from CE, one she was only remotely acquainted with. Hell, the only one she really knew was Strike, because of her interdimensional girlfriend. It was time to make a hard choice. Taking a deep breath to build up her courage, her fingers ran over the selection windows. The Gundam selection was fairly simple, but the Pilot one wasn't what she had been expecting. Rather than selecting a pilot avatar, it was a selection for your actual pilot suit, from CE factions. Browsing through the catalog, she found ones marked ASTRAY, which seemed to fit a female figure quite well. Selecting the M1 Astray Pilot Suit, her floating nakedness was replaced by that of the suit, which shockingly actually felt like it was being worn. She was actually going into combat... as herself... It made her a bit nervous; she'd always been behind an avatar in Gundam. Now, she was the pilot. It was all her own abilities being put to the test. So this is the Entrance Exam... she pondered. Then she shook off her unease and steeled herself. No, this is going to be fun! MOBILE SUIT: ZGMF-X10A Freedom Gundam PILOT SUIT SELECTION: M1 Astray Pilot Suit Edited by Ayane Isuzu, Jan 28 2009, 09:44 AM.

When Ayane had completed her selection and hit the "Join" panel, the screens dissappeared, with only Sakarako's words echoeing in the background, "Good luck! Only advice I can give you is stay on guard, you're on his turf now so-" however her transmission was cut short as pixels of light began to crawl over Ayane's body, starting at her feet and moving up. Her pilot suit was slowly forming onto her and pretty soon, she was suited up, helmet and all. Next, her sphere began to reform, closing in on her and forcing her into a sitting position. In the same fashion that her pilot suit had been formed, her cockpit began to form around her. On the outside, the Freedom had formed as well. The cockpit was exactly like it had been in the Gundam games in the arcade, with footpedals and joysticks, only now incorparated the same kind aspects as the actual Freedom from the anime. "Custimization and praction phase commencing." It was the robotic voice from before. "Launching in 3, 2, 1." On the Heads Up Display, the Freedoms various cameras picked up the pixels of light, forming a tunnel to the battle arena. It would seem the setting, was space, more specifically the Asteroid Belt. The tunnel began to approach until it enveloped the Freedom with Ayane inside and put her into the battle field. The robotic voice spoke once more, "Each player will have a 15 minute preparation time to familirize themselves with their respective MS. Players will only be able to move within their designated starting boxes, " clearly designated by a series of green asteroids floating around in a large circle. "The game will commence when the green containment becons disappear." "Good luck, Ayane. I've seen you fight before. Don't dissapoint me." Nickle said as he waited in his own starting circle at the opposite end of the large map. His hands gripped the joysticks and a smile was hidden beneath his black helmet. Would she hate him, for using an unknown model? |

As the battlefield appeared on the Freedom's cockpit displays, Ayane grimaced. A free-gravity space level with asteroids. Great. She greatly preferred the ground--even low-gravity ground--levels in Gundam games, where there was a set directional fix. Not to mention, cutting your thrusters in ground levels means you fell... and gravity was great for dodging if you had nothing left. In space, though... you had to be way more concious of your surroundings, and there was no gravity to help you go anywhere. It was all a factor of the Freedom's thrust. Not to mention, she thought to herself while biting her lip, asteroids could keep me from using my contingency plan. Still, this was the battle, and there was nothing she could do to change it. Rather greatfully, Nickle had provided a practice period for her to get used to the controls and weapons of the Freedom before the actual combat started, so gingerly taking hold of the oversized throttle sticks, she decided to use all the time she had. "Good luck, Ayane. I've seen you fight before. Don't dissapoint me." Ayane only replied in her mind. I'll try not to... Time to familiarize. The throttle controls did as expected, adjusting the thrust potential of the Freedom's main drive. It was a little more complex than the simplified controls of the cockpits outside, but the gist of it was clear. With the Freedom's engines at maximum potential, she switched her hands to the main control levers and pushed them forward. This resulted in a bit of a shock; Freedom leapt forward, as expected... but she hadn't anticipated the g-forces from that action to slam her back into the pilot seat. It was...real! Pulling back to neutral she took a few deep breaths to calm herself down, then continued testing the controls. Foot pedals for altitude and attitude adjustment... main controls for x-plane movement. Weapons triggers on the main controls, with additional modes selectable from the panels behind the throttle levers. HiMAT was one of them, the Freedom's most famous, one even a girl like her who wasn't familiar with SEED knew about. Melee Combat Mode selectable from the main weapon controls, for quicker access in a close-range situation. She'd have to be careful not to press that accidentally. Still, despite its complexity in available controls, it boiled down to directions, thrust and weapons. The only real issue was that in open space, there was no directional orientation. She didn't feel sick over it, but the lack of gravity still bothered her. Gravity was part of her tactics, after all. Content with her control setup, she set the sensors for automatic lock-on and sat back, bringing the Freedom's thrusters back to 0% potential and just letting the Gundam float in eerie silence. The high-pitched hum of the life-support system was all that interfered. You can do this, Ayane thought to herself as she wrung her hands around the controls. No matter what comes, you can win. Believe in yourself! Smiling with a hint of nervousness, she only wished it was Saito on the other end, so she could destroy him properly in such a realistic simulation... |
