How long had she been running?

...It had to have been a few hours now. She had no idea where she was now. Hayate was probably worried… but that didn’t matter. She could explain it tomorrow! Right… there wouldn’t be any problem if she just explained it tomorrow…

With a strange swish, the phantasm stabilized. She had moved as if she were a shadow earlier. If you looked at her, you saw a small ‘blur’. If you listened for her movements, all there was was an empty echo.

...That characteristic emptiness was what gave her away.

”Hey.”

...No

Why could he still follow her!? Why didn’t he give up. Why couldn’t she just escape…!

Her legs turned into a blur once again, but not even this could protect her from his blade. A white arc carved through her deformed body… and her escape was quickly halted. Her body reformed, taking on Hayate’s visage once again.

”You gave her your goodbyes, right?”

A black arc followed the white. Her left hand reached into the darkness besides her, pulling the nameless sword from the darkness and using it to deflect his attack. The blade only barely managed to stop his attack, but the Profound Darkness herself was knocked away. Her body was like a rag-doll to his force… and she was effortlessly slammed into a tree.

”S-Should’ve… finished it when I had the chance…”

As long as she held onto her sword, she could win. As long as she held onto her blade, he had to be careful. Even if it cost her everything else, she had to keep her hand on this!

The girl pushed herself up, reeling from the force of his swipe. Had he… gotten stronger? Or did he just hold back that time…?

...Haha, no. She had gotten this much weaker, hadn’t she?

”There’s no way you would let your current host suffer, right? As long as I have this body, your blade will be dull.”

...But at this point… it didn’t matter if her blade was dull or not. In a straight up fight, he would win. The only thing that would change… was if she could live or not. Even if it were to sadden Hayate, even if she had to harm her family, the only way to drive him off… was to take him out before he could finish her.

But… could she even do that?

Once more, his black sword carved through the wind, leaving nothing but a white trial in it’s wake.

‘Hayate’ stopped it with her own, parrying the blade with all of her strength. Her blade was one that could cut everything. It’s very existence was written so that it could do just that. Yet she couldn’t even chip away at his.

Truth was above illusions, after all. Knowledge beats ignorance.

It was the Darkness’ blade… that was getting chipped away.

”Behind your deceit, you’re still just a regular girl. If you lower your head, I’ll make it painless.”

”Like… hell!”

Her sword cut up, and his cut down. When his blade met hers, the result was the same as the first time. She was blown away. With a massive force, her body was crushed into the ground.

”You know you can’t win.”

One strike of white carved deep into her side. But instead of a wound, it left emptiness. The part of her body that his blade touched… dissolved like ash in the wind. Not only that, but the wound she had sustained earlier, the one in her stomach…

It opened up once again.

”G-guwah… ahh…”

That hurt. While the white itself didn’t harm her body, the way it had opened her wounds again… ah. That accursed ability…

”You... really haven’t changed… no matter who your host is, all you rely on is that… thing…”

Her body shifted upwards, curving around the blade. This was her chance. She could not defeat him as long as he had his sword… so all she had to do was disarm him, right?

All she needed was one strike, and it was over. One strike, one strike, one strike…

Her hand raised her sword high, and with all of her strength, it came down on his hand.

- - -

”...A-ahaha… Oww… I guess I should’ve said goodbye, huh?”

...A single large stake impaled her body. It reached as high as the trees that surrounded her body, and it was as thick as an adult’s arm. It had pinned her to the ground. She couldn’t move. Not her arms, not her legs.

No matter how often she tried, the Profound Darkness could never beat the Great Light.

After all, that’s why he named her that.

...Even if she had transcended humanity…

He was the one person she could never beat.

‘He’ had already left. Her execution had finished. All it was now, was a matter of time.

”...Hayate…”

...She’ll be fine, right? Her friends will protect her. She can actually live now…

There’s no need to worry. She’ll cry for a day, and then she’ll be fine. She was running on borrowed time, anyway. It’s better that she went out with a bang as opposed to silently, right?

...After all… for the first time… she managed to…

The young shade barely had any form. She looked less like a human, and more like an empty mass by now. By just closing her own eyes… she could end her life right now. She could end her pain.

...But something was telling her to fight… if even for a few moments.

So she fought. She fought in her own way.

Even if I want to die…
Even if it hurts so much…
...she didn’t give up either, did she?

But how could she fight?

That didn’t matter… she only had to. With all her strength… she clinged to life. Just so she could see her again. So she could apologize, so she could thank her. All the things she should’ve said…

Her body regained its previous, human shape.

...But with his judgement, that was all she could do…

Stay alive… stay alive…

Clarissa... stay alive...

Goddamn, how hard is it really to track down one person...? The half-phantom wasn't even sure what she was supposed to be tracking down, only just barely managing to single out an unknown anomaly in the sea of presence and emotion.

It took hours, even. Youma's persistence akin to that of a hound should be commendable.

She was worried however, when the scent led her deep into the forest.

Crunch. Crack. Snap. Dry leaves and little twigs snapped and crushed under the half-phantom's feet as she went in. Her lead had led her far off the trail. Let's just hope she wouldn't get lost.

Well, she'll be alright probably. It's been a long time since the girl could manage to find her own way in life.

Besides, she has something far more pressing to be worried about. "...Oh- shit...!" Mainly, the human-shaped black silhouette that was impaled to the ground by a stake that was as tall as the trees around.

...Wait hold on hold on, what happened here?! Is this supposed to be the same person she's supposed to look for...?

...No doubt about it, her scent led her here... There was no one else around... Wait, waitwaitwait, dammit...! "H-hold on, I'll get you out...!" The half-phantom muttered frantically, darting forward and wrapping her arms tightly around the stake in an attempt to pull it out and free the... her. She's not as strong as another much stronger person, but... dammit, she has to do something now...

He definitely wouldn't just leave someone in this state!

It hurt. It hurt really bad. It wasn’t just the stake that was driven through her body- no, everything hurt now. The noises of the forest itself. The wildlife moving around her. The trees whistling in the wind. It all hurt.

Every last noise around her felt like nails on chalkboard. Like a high pitched wail tearing at her ears. Everything sounded the same. The gentle natural medley of the forest had quickly gone from soothing to awful.

...Even though she resisted, she knew these might be the final things she ever hears.

But it was interrupted. Thank god, it was interrupted. There was a high-pitched voice that cut through the night.

...Ah, how horrible. The Profound Darkness couldn’t even hear what she was saying. And even when she opened her eyes, she couldn’t see the person that was trying to…

Was she trying to save her?

”A-ahaha… Don’t waste your energy.”

She… honestly didn’t know. She couldn’t see what this girl was doing, nor could she make sense of her words. It just sounded like shrieking to her ears. But everything was more pleasant than the noise she was hearing earlier.

”Can you do me a favour?”

...Considering her position, her voice was surprisingly composed. She sounded calm. Right now, she seemed calm. It hurt a lot, but that wasn’t a problem. The pain was going to end soon.

That’s right, Hayate.
She moved her hand towards her neck. Around a chain, was a large, golden key. With her remaining strength, she ripped it right off.

”Give this… To Hayate…”

Did this person even know who that is? It.. .didn’t matter. She didn’t have the time to think. If she focused her entire being on existing, she might last for a few more hours, but… just talking was draining her life away.

”And, this too…”

Her hands moved to the stake that had gouged her. Youma would feel no pain from touching it, but the moment the impaled girl touched the stake, her fingers wilted into dust. But that didn’t stop her.

...With all her strength… she grasped onto that which was killing her.

And her being flowed into it.

...The eerie white turned black. The same ‘black’ that her body was. The colour was empty, so, so empty.

”You’re still here, right?”

She honestly didn’t know. Her senses were leaving her. She didn’t want to die. She didn’t want to take the easy way out. So she wouldn’t. And she wasn’t.

”Tell her… To treat this as if it was me.…”

The white stake was nothing but emptiness now. An endless emptiness that still so greatly overshadowed her body.

But it shrunk. It jolted and quaked, it… invaded her body.

...And it disappeared.

...Along with her, herself.

”Tell her… Clarissa won’t leave her. That… Clarissa will keep her promise.”
And after those final words echoed through the forest… there was nothing left of her. Only the golden key…

...And a small, golden cross that slowly lowered from the sky.

It shined and sparkled beautifully, even in the darkness of the night.

...Oi oi... She didn't bargain to have this shoved to her face... The half-phantom was just supposed to find someone, not see them die...

Before being given the responsibility of sending a message to someone called 'Hayate'.

...It was that girl at the hospital. True, she's never met her in-person, but there is nothing that he knows that she doesn't know.

The half-phantom reached out and plucked the golden key from the air. It was very bright, and honestly quite beautiful. It was an awe-inspiring sight that she's holding in her hand... and a sad one at that. But... "Heh... she is so lucky,"

To have someone who could be so loyal as to stay with them even after death... is not an opportunity many would have.

The half-phantom placed the golden cross securely in her pocket. She disappeared, just as a dead leaf fell.
