Train stations are for people who are arriving. Train stations are for people who are leaving. Hyakuji Station. No real difference, despite the city's history with superpowers and the occasional bit of chaos. People came; people went. Natsumi toyed with the ribbon on her uniform. Behind her the sun began to slip down towards the horizon, the first hints of dusk spreading across the sky. She liked it here. There were crowds, as always. Movement. Chatter. Background noises. Trains passing, mechanical beasts of motion and light and sound. No one paid attention to the girl sitting on the bench. Or at least, that was what it felt like. Perhaps there were a few cautious enough to avoid, consciously or not, the colors of the Hyakuji High uniform - janitors, builders, the men and women who had to clean up after all the trouble and the property damage those with superpowers (and those they fought) sometimes caused to the city. Perhaps even innocent bystanders were avoiding her, wary of getting caught in the crossfire if a conflict should break out. It could happen, Natsumi thought. But it was less likely, here. In the press of the crowd, she felt almost invisible. Anonymous. In one hand - the hand not playing with the ribbon - was her bag, full of school supplies and the products of the errands she had run after school had ended that day. She hadn't gone back to her dorm yet. Once the sun set, she would begin heading back. It was then that the ribbon came apart, tumbling into laces down the front of her uniform, as she tugged a little too hard. Quietly, she began to tie it back together. |

"Bloody nature spirits. Why did they have me running all over the town." A rather annoyed mage muttered as he entered the train station. Why was he here you ask? Well David Mason had thought it would be smart to do some favours for some local nature spirits and minor fae, so they would owe him a favour or two in the future. The errands they had him run had him running all over the city. He had just finished the last favour near the train station and decided to enter it in search of a vending machine. The young mage was parched and badly needed a drink. He cast his eyes around the station, looking for any tell-tale signs of his coin operated saviour. Although he couldn't see one immediately. But he did see a somewhat familiar face. A girl he recognised from his supernatural studies class. Although her name escaped him at the moment. He didn't bother asking his familiar for the info. Figureing that she may be to help him. David walked up to the girl and gave her a smile. "Hi there. Hate to bother you, but do you know if there are any vending machines around here? I'm parched. |

He caught her eye before he even started talking, most likely because he was walking towards her. The feelings of anonymity faded quickly. But, she thought, there were worse people to be seen by or with. "Hey, David," Natsumi said, as she finished tying her ribbon into a neat knot. "Funny meeting you here. Didn't, um, figure anyone I knew frequented the train station. Oh! Right, a drink..." She squinted through the crowds for a second, then shrugged apologetically. "There should be one on the far side of the platform, but if I remember right, they took it out for repairs yesterday." After a moment of hesitation, her hand slipped into her bag, feeling around for a moment before she found what she was looking for. "Here. Try this." She held it out to him - a medium-sized bottle of vegetable juice. |

Oh crap. She remembers his name but he doesn't remember hers. Quick;y David! Use magic to solve the problem. "Natsumi Ito, Master." The voice of his familiar rang in his mind. The spirits perfect memory helping its master remember important details like a girl's name. Along with spells, incantations and potion recipes. She did make a good point. Not many people would choose a railway station as their local haunt. "It's nice to see you Natsumi. " He smiled and gratefully accepted the can of juice with a utterance of thanks. He then addressed as to why he was here "I'm here because I just finished up some wizardy stuff in the area and I was looking for a vending machine." He inspected the can. Some kind of vegetable juice. But at this point David was willing to drink anything to quench his thirst. He cracked open the lid and poured it down his gullet. The taste didn't bother him right now. He may end up regretting it later once he finds out exactly what it is. Letting out a sigh of satisfaction, David faced Natsumi again. "Thank you again. I owe you one." He then looked around, curiously. "Mind if I ask what you're doing here? Are you waiting for someone?" Edited by Epicjester, Sep 2 2014, 05:27 PM.

"'Wizardy' stuff?" Natsumi would have asked more on the subject, but that was about when David drank the whole bottle of vegetable juice in one sitting. One standing, perhaps, would have been more fitting, seeing as she was the only one on the bench. Her own sigh of exasperation accompanied the sigh he gave afterwards. No, she wasn't complaining, not really. But seeing as she had bought the juice thinking it'd last her a day or so... he must have been really thirsty. She'd just have to buy some more a little earlier than she'd planned. She moved over on the bench, digging in her bag again. "You can sit down if you want." "And no, not waiting for anyone." Natsumi drew out another bottle of vegetable juice, unscrewing it and taking a sip. Mostly carrot, with a tinge of pineapple. "It's just quiet here." "I mean," she said, raising her voice as a bickering couple passed close to the bench, "not quieter, but it's..." A gesture at the passengers boarding the train. "Sometimes you can be alone in a crowd, you know?" |

He shrugged when she commented on "wizardy stuff". "I was just doing some favors for some local spirits." He sat down beside her. "Thanks for the juice. I'll be sure to pay you back later." His faced became a bit downcast when she mentioned the idea of feeling alone in a crowd. "I know the feeling." He muttered. "It's not that fun being alone." |

Natsumi looked over at him when he said that, and for a moment her eyes softened slightly. Then she looked away. "That's not what I meant." "I like it here," she said, after a brief silence. "It's always so busy out there. Giant monsters, powers flying around... Don't get me wrong, most of it is for a good reason." "It's busy here too, but not for me. Everyone's getting on and off trains, and I just sit here and think." She shrugged lightly. "It's like my own place. My own personal, um, rest stop, I guess. It's nicer than staying in my room." She looked down at the juice bottle in her hands, then back at him. Smiled. The sun dipped lower in the evening sky. "But it's nice to have company sometimes, too." |

David gave a quiet chuckle when Natsumi stated that she desired silence from the daily madness that was Hyakuji. He could agree on that. "Can't argue with that." He gave a wry smile. "Weird things happen daily here. A nice hideaway, safe from the madness sounds like a smart idea to me." He leaned back on the bench slightly, head looking upwards. Reminiscing on some of the weirder things he had seen and done since he got to the city. "About a few weeks ago, I accidentally brought my attempt at baking to life. It then tried to eat me." He turned to Natsumi and gave the girl a smile. "I took that as a sign I was not meant to be a baker." He actually laughed at his own joke, a small chuckle. "What about you? Anything overly weird happen to you?" He watched the sun descend, sitting next to a girl who offered him some rather odd juice out of the kindness of her heart. "Most things are better with more people." His voice had softened at this point, thinking of all the friends he had made in the school. It was different here. He was no longer alone. That fact kept the young mage going. |

"Well," she said, mouth curved in amusement from David's joke, "not really." "Although I guess you could count the... 'incident' with Ken. Or the giant world-ending monster that came through Cape Erimo." Natsumi scratched the back of her neck sheepishly. "I didn't do much to help stop it, honestly, but I was there. Geez, that was a long bus ride back." Natsumi lifted her juice up to her mouth, taking another sip. She let the silence stretch for a short moment, watching businessmen with stiff ties and briefcases hurry by. Reminiscing, a little. She still remembered how hopeless the fight had seemed. She still wished she had been able to do more, to help out even a little bit more than she had been able to. But it had had a happy ending - bittersweet, perhaps - and maybe all was well that ended well. "We should cook together sometime," she said suddenly. She grinned, an easy confidence in the motion now that she knew who she was dealing with. Most people really weren't so bad once she got to know them. "I'm taking the Cooking elective, after all! And if anything tries to eat us, I'll try my hardest to hit it in the face - er, or face-analogue." |

"Staying in Ken-sempai's presence for an extended time is an.... acquired taste." David agreed. When Natsumi mentioned the beast back in Cape Erimo, David shrugged. "True there wasn't much we could do. But that was more to us being new at this more than anything else/" He smiled at her. "Next time something like that comes, we'll both be better at using our powers. So then we can make a difference." It was then Natsumi offered to cook with him. David didnt really know how to respond to that. It was the first time someone had ever shown the desire to spend time with him. He froze for a moment. "I...I'd like that. Thank you." He broke out into a wide smile. Today was turning out to be a good one. "You can punch it while I blast it in the face." |

"Sounds like we have an agreement, then. We'll have your destiny as a baker changed yet," Natsumi teased. Making friends was easy sometimes, and hard other times. Right now, though, she was comfortable. This was the sort of conversation that just felt right. As the sky grew darker, blue lights flickered on at the end of the platform, and the crowds began to thin. The evening rush was almost over. Now it was night that fast approached. "Where are you rooming, anyway? Yoshima?" She spoke quieter now that the hubbub of the crowd had largely ceased. Her bottle of vegetable juice was half-empty, as well. She considered it for a moment, thinking about putting it away, before setting it back down in her lap. "I'm thinking we should start heading back." "If you don't mind walking with me." She tilted her head slightly, waiting for his response. |

David chuckled at Natsumi's teasing. It felt nice talking to someone like this. The young mage wasn't exactly savvy in terms of social interactions. But he figured that this one was going well. "Nah, I'm in the Yuki dorm. Room 213." He replied, offering an unspoken invitation to the girl to visit if she wanted to. "What about you? Yuki or Fudo?" He rose from the bench and looked at his phone to check the time. "True. It's about time to head back. You don't know if there is a curfew?" He turned to her and smiled. "I'd be happy to walk you back to your room Natsumi." |

"Yuki? Looks like we're in the same building, then," Natsumi said, brushing off her skirt as she got up from the bench. The juice disappeared, tucked neatly away in her bag. At his last statement, she couldn't help but stifle a smirk. As it was, a corner of her lips lifted ever so slightly. "That sounds very... gentlemanly of you." She giggled. Hefted her bag over her shoulder, now lighter one and a half juice bottles' weight. "Come on. Let's just walk. We can argue about who to drop off first later." And with that she headed off, pausing at the entrance to let David catch up, then continuing down the street all the way home. |
